Army has fired coach Rich Ellerson.

The move comes one day after Army lost to Navy 34-7. It was the Black Knights’ 12th consecutive loss to the Midshipmen and the fifth under Ellerson.

Army finished the season 3-9 and Ellerson was 20-41 in five seasons at Army.

"Obviously, in the body of work, we've made some progress," Ellerson said following the loss to Navy. "But I wasn't brought in to make progress. I was brought in to win some football games and beat Navy. I've lost to our rival five times."

Ellerson’s best season came in 2010 when the Black Knights finished 7-6, which included a 16-14 win over SMU in the Armed Forces Bowl.

GoBlackKnights.com listed several possible candidates to fill Ellerson's spot, including Morgan State offensive coordinator Greg Gregory and New York Jets assistant special teams coach Ben Kotwica. Kotwica was a captain on Army's 10-2 team in 1996. Gregory was a former assistant and head coach with the Black Knights. Ohio State co-offensive coordinator/offensive line coach Ed Warriner also is a possibility.
