In one of the stranger plays we’ve seen this season, UCLA punter Sean Covington was punting out of his own end zone and stepped on the end line for a safety against Virginia Tech on the Sun Bowl.
The play was unforced. Virginia Tech wasn’t even rushing the punter. Covington just lost track of where he was in the end zone, stepped back when he received the ball and cost his team two points.
At the time, the gaffe actually drew Virginia Tech within two scores with most of the fourth quarter remaining. However, quarterback Mark Leal threw an interception on the Hokies next possession and the Bruins went on to score.
UCLA won the game 42-14.
