Making the morning rounds.
• Take two. Signing day is still a few days away, but Oklahoma reinforced its formidable stockpile of offensive firepower Thursday with word that Trey Metoyer — a former five-star recruit who was cast into prep school purgatory when he failed to make his grades last summer — has been academically cleared and expects to enroll for the spring semester next week. Rivals ranked Metoyer as the No. 2 wide receiver and No. 12 overall player in the 2011 recruiting class, with explicit comparisons to Dez Bryant. Alongside emerging stars Kenny Stills and Jaz Reynolds, though, he's just one more weapon in a receiving corps that still ranks as the deepest in the nation. [Norman Transcript]
• There was some nodding, a handshake, maybe a little champagne. But I never said "yes." Contrary to multiple reports earlier this week that he'd initially accepted an offer to become head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Oregon coach Chip Kelly told a local radio station Thursday that he only listened to the Bucs' offer and never agreed to anything. "The only decision I ever made was to not accept the job," Kelly told KUGN in Eugene. "I never changed my mind. I never committed to the job and then flip-flopped." To be fair, he's probably obligated to say that, but here's guessing whoever was leaking information to the press on Sunday night still begs to differ. [Eugene Register-Guard, KUGN]
• Symbolic gestures for $400,000, Alex. As expected, Texas has approved a four-year contract extension for Mack Brown, sewing up its 60-year-old head coach through 2020. The new deal doesn't include a raise — Brown is already the highest-paid coach in the nation at more than $5 million per year, with an annual raise of $100,000 built in — but it should end lingering rumors that he's on the verge of retirement. "He represents the university in exactly the way that we want it to be represented," said UT president William Powers. "For 14 years, he's had tremendous success on the field and equally important, more important, he's represented the university with class, with integrity. It is important to us to have Mack Brown as our football coach for as long into the future as we can. This contract is an expression of that." [Associated Press]
• I do not think that word means what you think it means. Five-star St. Petersburg, Fla., defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. is technically "committed" to Florida State, and…
…well, maybe we should make that was committed to Florida State, although it's hardly the first time he's been caught flirting with the enemy. Fowler — the No. 3 defensive end and No. 28 overall player in the 2012 class, according to Rivals — recently posed in a Gator jersey with his brother and godbrother, both "huge Florida fans," and said there's a "25 percent chance" that he's going to leave FSU at the altar when he announces his final decision next week. "I don't know where I'm going," Fowler said. "Not yet. I need this week to think about it. It's gonna be pretty hard. I'm making a decision that's gonna stick with me for the rest of my life." Quickly… N.C. State picks up a quarterback transfer from Colorado State. … Boise State loses a cornerback who "did not live up to the standards of the program." … Clemson's leading tackler will miss spring practice in recovery from knee surgery. … Texas pays a visit to Dorial Green-Beckham. … Tennessee's former athletic director says he received death threats and moved his family out of Knoxville months before his resignation. … Alabama has another obnoxious t-shirt. … Catlab takes on Dana Holgorsen. … And the Orange Bowl has unveiled the logo for the next BCS Championship Game, which looks pretty much exactly like all the other logos for the BCS Championship Game.
