Florida quarterback Tyler Murphy will finish his collegiate career with the coach who recruited him to play for the Gators.
After graduating in December, Murphy, a redshirt senior from Connecticut, transferred to Boston College and will be immediately eligible to play for Steve Addazio, a fellow Connecticut native. Addazio was an offensive assistant at Florida from 2005-2010.
Murphy was low on the Gators depth chart in his first three years in Gainesville before elevating to the backup position in 2013. Starter Jeff Driskel broke his leg on Sept. 21 and Murphy came on and led Florida to a 31-17 win. He started the next six games before being sidelined with a shoulder injury. The shoulder injury originally occurred on Oct. 12 against LSU, and Murphy re-aggravated it in November, forcing him to miss the final three games of the year.
Murphy’s sister, Morgan Murphy, a basketball player at Binghamton, was critical of Florida’s handling of the injury.
“Wish they would’ve done this weeks ago when they realize the severity instead of trying to cover it up & act like he was fine,” Murphy wrote in a tweet that she later deleted.
Florida was 2-4 in the games Murphy started as he threw for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns while also running for 270 yards and three touchdowns.
With BC’s Chase Rettig graduating, Murphy should be in the mix to land the starting quarterback job for the Eagles.
