Tosh Lupoi and Washington reach $300,000 settlement to part ways

Washington reached a $300,000 separation settlement with former assistant coach Tosh Lupoi on Wednesday.

Lupoi has been under NCAA investigation after the track coach of recruit Andrew Basham alleged that Lupoi paid him $4,500 to cover the costs of Basham's tutoring services and reimbursement for online classes.

Lupoi has denied the allegations and declined comment to the Seattle Times after news of the settlement broke Wednesday. He was a candidate to follow Steve Sarkisian to USC, but that possibility disappeared when the allegations surfaced. Sarkisian left Washington to become USC's coach on Dec. 2 and when the Huskies subsequently hired Boise State's Chris Petersen, Lupoi was reassigned within the athletic department.

The settlement allows Lupoi to leave the school without Washington having to pay the full buyout of his contract. According to the Times, Lupoi's contract stipulated he was owed $350,000 if he was fired without cause and $700,000 if he was fired before Jan. 13.

He was paid $350,000 a year as the Huskies' defensive line coach. Lupoi played football at Cal from 2000-05 and joined Sarkisian's staff at Washington in 2012.

In December, Basham's mother denied that Lupoi paid for tutoring. Basham signed a letter of intent with Washington in February but didn't qualify academically.
