After a fifth consecutive losing season at Wake Forest, long-time head coach Jim Grobe surprisingly resigned in December. Now, seven weeks later, Grobe has been linked to an opening in the Conference USA.
AL.com is reporting that the 61-year-old Grobe, who coached the Demon Deacons from 2001-2013, will interview for the head coaching position at UAB on Friday.
In his 13 seasons at Wake Forest, Grobe had a 77-82 record. The peak of his tenure came in 2006 when the Demon Deacons went 11-3, won the ACC Championship and played in the Orange Bowl – the school’s first ever BCS bowl. He won the AP Coach of the Year award and ACC Coach of the Year that season.
Prior to his stint at Wake Forest, Grobe was the head coach at Ohio for six seasons and was a defensive assistant at Marshall and Air Force.
Grobe is looking to replace Garrick McGee, who resigned last week to become the offensive coordinator at Louisville under Bobby Petrino. According to AL.com, other names linked to the job include Cincinnati offensive coordinator Eddie Gran, Bethune-Cookman head coach Brian Jenkins, Atlanta Falcons tight ends coach Chris Scelfo, and Jacksonville State head coach Bill Clark.
