Connor Wood’s departure marks the fifth QB loss for Colorado in nine months

Colorado coach Mike MacIntyre is having a tough time keeping quarterbacks on campus.

Connor Wood, who started the first five games of the 2013 season, announced last week he was leaving the program and giving up football altogether. Wood will graduate this summer with a degree in business finance.

Wood’s departure marks the fifth quarterback to leave the Colorado program in the past nine months.

Colorado went into spring football last March with six quarterbacks on the roster and none of those players is with the program now. Of those six, only Jordan Webb, a transfer from Kansas, exhausted his eligibility.

The loss of Wood was disheartening, but not a game-changer. Wood was supposed to be the next great thing for the Buffs when the season began, but struggled and was ultimately replaced by Sefo Liufau. Liufau started the final seven games of the season and will be the starter when the Buffs enter spring football in a couple months. He’s considered the future for the Buffs and Wood, who originally transferred from Texas, probably saw the writing on the wall.

Colorado will only have two quarterbacks for the spring – sophomores Liufau and Jordan Gehrke. According to Rivals.com, Colorado will add Cade Apsay as its only quarterbacking signee (as of right now).

Turnover with a new coach isn’t out of the ordinary. Colorado hasn’t had a great deal of luck with quarterbacks really since Joel Klatt (in terms of wins), so having so many on the roster isn’t all that strange either.

But MacIntyre appears to be confident Liufau is the guy who can bring Colorado back to the Promised Land making all the weeding out worth it. Time will tell.
