South Carolina State football player Brandon Robinson was shot to death outside a campus dormitory Friday afternoon. The 20-year-old Orangeburg, S.C. native was a junior majoring in industrial engineering technology who played outside linebacker and defensive end for the football team.
The shooting incident took place around 1:30 Friday. Robinson was transported to a nearby hospital and was later pronounced dead.
A suspect, 19-year-old Justin Bernard Singleton, was arrested early Saturday and was charged with Robinson’s murder. Police said Singleton shot Robinson in the neck while the two were arguing. Singleton is also a student at South Carolina State.
“The SC State University family is devastated by the tragic loss of Brandon. Our hearts are heavy with grief and sorrow by the senseless act of violence, which took too soon a beloved member of our university family,” University President Thomas J. Elzey said in a statement.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Brandon’s family and friends during this most difficult time in their lives. On behalf of SC State University, I extend our deepest, heartfelt sympathy to them,” Elzey said.
Robinson played in four games for the Bulldogs last season.
“We are at a loss for words right now,” said head coach Buddy Pough. “The entire university and our athletic family are grieving right now and our hearts are heavy. Our deepest condolences go out to the Robinson family. Brandon was a fine young man who was paying his way through college. All he wanted to do was play football for the university. It’s a tragic situation, one from which we all must learn."
