Is Ralph Friedgen close to making a return to coaching?
The former Maryland coach is expected to become the next offensive coordinator at Rutgers. NJ.com reported negotiations with Friedgen aren't finalized but that an agreement was close.
Friedgen was fired at Maryland following the 2010 season, when Maryland went 9-4 and Friedgen was named the ACC Coach of the Year. In 2009, Maryland was 2-10, but despite the seven game improvement, he still lost his job.
When Friedgen was terminated, Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson said that he believed Maryland "can be great." In Friedgen's 10 years at the school Maryland was 74-50. In the three years since Friedgen's dismissal under Randy Edsall, the Terrapins are 13-24.
He would replace former Kansas State coach Ron Prince as the Scarlet Knights' offensive coordinator under coach Kyle Flood. Prince left Rutgers to become an assistant on Jim Caldwell's staff with the Detroit Lions.
With the Scarlet Knights' move to the Big Ten, it also means that Friedgen would be facing his former employer sooner rather than later. Maryland is moving to the Big Ten in 2014 as well and the two teams will face off on Nov. 29.
Before spending a decade at Maryland, Friedgen was the offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech for four seasons. While in the Big Ten, he'll also be in the same division with a former assistant coach in Penn State's James Franklin. Franklin was Maryland's offensive coordinator for three seasons from 2008-10 before he became the coach for three seasons at Vanderbilt.
