Missouri star wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham was arrested Jan. 10 when he was a passenger in a car that was found to have a pound of marijuana. However, on Thursday, new court documents obtained by the Springfield News-Leader say that the marijuana in the car did not belong to Green-Beckham.
The car was pulled over for having an expired license plate and a Springfield, Mo. Officer reported that he smelled marijuana. Green-Beckham and two others, Patrick Prouty and John McDaniel (the driver), were arrested and held in jail on possible felony drug distribution charges.
The documents revealed that Prouty admitted to owning the marijuana and McDaniel told police that Prouty sometimes sold pot. McDaniel told police that the three had just smoked marijuana in the car and after consenting to a vehicle search, two scales, a grinder, and plastic bags filled with marijuana were found.
Green-Beckham was patted down and nothing illegal was found. He reportedly told officers that the marijuana was not his and that he did smell marijuana when he entered the vehicle, but never smoked it and did not know who it belonged to. Green-Beckham claimed that he was only in the car to get a ride to a friend’s house, the report said.
Tyson Martin and Ryan Cole, Green-Beckham's attorneys, released a statement Thursday saying they hope the matter will resolved soon.
“Dorial has been nothing but completely cooperative with law enforcement throughout this entire process. Dorial very much regrets putting himself in this situation, and he is anxious to put this ordeal behind him. We are hopeful, in light of what this investigation has uncovered, that this matter will quickly be resolved in a positive manner for Dorial,” the statement said.
Greene County (Mo.) prosecutors are awaiting results of a police investigation and lab results before they decide whether charges will be filed.
Green-Beckham had a prior incident involving marijuana. In October 2012, he was suspended for a game after being arrested of marijuana possession charges. The misdemeanor marijuana possession charge was dropped, but he later pled guilty to a reduced charge of trespassing.
Green-Beckham had 59 catches for 883 yards and 12 touchdowns in his sophomore season at Mizzou.
