The majority of Texas’ verbal commitments for the class of 2014 were originally recruited by former head coach Mack Brown and his staff. When Brown ultimately resigned in December, those recruits had to make the decision to stick with the University and new coach Charlie Strong, or look elsewhere.
One of those recruits is John Bonney, a three-star safety from Houston. Bonney committed to the Longhorns in September, and Bonney was on his official visit to Texas when Brown resigned.
Bonney told KTRK in Houston that Brown, who was presumably looking out for the best interests of the recruits he had built relationships with, told recruits that they should “look around” before deciding if they wanted to stick with the Longhorns.
“I was at my official visit when Mack Brown resigned and he told us to go look around. (He said) he’ll even talk to other coaches for you and everything because he really just wanted the best for us as players,” Bonney said.
Some people may perceive this as Brown being vindictive against UT and trying to sabotage the recruiting class, but in reality, Brown’s track record shows that he is a guy who looks out for the best interests of his players. At the time, Texas did not have Brown’s replacement in line yet, so you can’t fault recruits looking at other options.
Bonney has taken visits to both Baylor and Auburn, but is still committed to Texas. With a few days until signing day, there is still a possibility that he could switch his commitment and sign elsewhere. Several other Brown recruits have already decommitted, but with two days until signing day, the Longhorns currently have the No. 14 ranked class in the nation according to Rivals.
