Utah DL Moana Ofahengaue is listed in critical condition after suffering a head injury in a motorized bike accident Sunday night.
According to a hospital spokesperson in a statement from the university, "family members are extremely optimistic about his recovery." Ofahengaue was a redshirt freshman in 2013.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Moana and his family during this very difficult time,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement. “He is a beloved member of our team and we will support him in his recovery in any way we can.”
No details of the accident were released. Ofahengaue's father, Tevita, played at BYU from 1997-2000 and was Mr. Irrelevant, the last pick of the 2001 NFL draft. His uncle, Kalani Sitake, is Utah's defensive coordinator.
In November, Florida starting offensive tackle Tyler Moore was sidelined for the season after a scooter accident. Moore fractured his right elbow.
