Urban Meyer has surgery to remove fluid from a cyst on his brain, not scheduled to miss practice

Ohio State said that coach Urban Meyer underwent a procedure to remove fluid from a cyst on his brain over the weekend.

Meyer has a congenital arachnoid cyst that was first discovered when he was an assistant on Notre Dame in 1998. The weekend surgery was designed to help lessen headaches that Meyer had been suffering.

The release from the university said that Meyer is "doing well." He's not expected to miss any spring practice time as sessions begin on Tuesday.

Arachnoid cysts are the most common type of brain cyst and occur in the space between the brain and the arachnoid membrane. According to this article, approximately five percent of the population has one and the vast majority of people who do have one are asymptomatic.

Meyer cited health reasons and the need to spend more time with his family when he stepped down from his post at the University of Florida after the 2010 season. He went to the hospital after the 2009 SEC Championship game because of chest pains and took a leave of absence after the season before returning for one more year. Meyer previously said that the 2009 hospital trip was because of esophogeal spasms.

He was hired as Ohio State's coach before the 2012 season after spending the 2011 season as an analyst for ESPN.
