Jameis Winston will miss only one football practice this spring while playing baseball

Jameis Winston’s busy spring has gotten a whole lot busier over the past week.

Florida State’s spring football practice started March 13 and Winston will spend the duration of practice playing both football and baseball, where he’s the team’s closer. The grand total of football practices he’s scheduled to miss according to coach Jimbo Fisher? One.

"This is the funnest part of my life right now because I’m busy,” Winston said Wednesday. “The busier I can get, the better for me.

“I enjoy doing both, going back and forth… Yeah it’s hard on the body, but it’s fun. I’m young and I’m pretty sure I can make it.”

How?

“Sleep extra. I literally have no time on my hands now,” Winston said. “Usually I can have some down time with the guys but now I’ve got to go on, go to bed or get some film work in and call it a night.”

He made it doing both football and baseball in the spring last year as he was vying to replace E.J. Manuel as FSU’s starting quarterback. This year, he has three saves on the diamond and is entering the football season as not only an incumbent starter, but a Heisman Trophy winner.

So yeah, the circumstances are a tad different. But they're in Winston's favor.

“It’s football and that’s what I love to do,” Winston said. "Nothing feels different for me. Did the Pitt game feel different from Auburn? The atmosphere was different, but it was still a football game that we had to go out there and win.

"Coming in this spring I’m going to have the same mentality. Relentless, try to lead my team to another national championship. And obviously, it’s a little easier on me because I feel that I have the spot, but (backup Sean Maguire)'s a great quarterback. And I’m going to keep working – Sean’s good enough to know that I’m going to keep getting pushed.”

Everyone clearly knows Winston is the starter. But before the BCS Championship Game in January, Fisher kicked Winston out of practice for a sluggish two-minute drill. Winston seemed well aware of the fact Wednesday.

"And I promise you, Coach Fisher isn’t going to let me become complacent, and I promise you, he’ll play mind games with you," Winston said. "He’ll put Sean in there and Sean will be on one of his ‘on’ days where he’s just throwing rockets on down the field and he can’t miss nothing and coach will sit me on the sideline real fast and show me like ‘Hey, we don’t need you.’”
