Meet Delta State’s unofficial mascot: The Fighting Okra

We don't do a lot on Division II schools, but once Delta State's mascot videos hit the mainstream, we had to make an exception. After all, the mascot is a Fighting Okra and you just don't see that every day.

According to the Okra's website, FeartheOkra.com, the Fighting Okra is the unofficial mascot of Delta State and is a bit of an urban legend. It appears on campus at random times usually just to torment students and athletes.

The latest video promotes the football program, which played in the Division II final last season and won a national title in 2000. This year it finished 11-3 in the Gulf South Conference standings.

But there are other videos, including the Okra motivating the swim team by placing an alligator in the pool and another that plays on the urban legend of the Fighting Okra, who isn't happy when someone decides to eat okra for lunch.

Almost all of the videos are funny, even the cameos promoting the different attributes of Delta State's campus and academics.

Even though Delta State's official mascot is the Statesmen, this is far cooler. Not sure how many vegetable mascots exist in college sports, but this has got to be one of the greatest.
