Texas Tech QB Davis Webb said he was extremely sick before the 2013 season began.
The culprit, he claims, was a stomach virus that hit him a couple weeks before the Red Raiders' game against SMU on Aug. 30. He told the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that he went from more than 200 pounds to way below the 200-pound threshold.
A-J: For several days?
Webb: I lost 40 pounds in three days. About 45 pounds, actually.
A-J: So you went from — ?
Webb: 212 to 168. Somewhere in there, give or take. Because I was 212 one day. By the next day, I was like 206. I was like, “OK, that’s a lot of weight, but, you know, it’s fall camp.” The next day I was 178. The next day I was 168.
And then I got told I wasn’t going to be the starting quarterback for week one, so that probably made it worse, too. (Smiles) Got stressed.
But it was all worth it, the adversity I had.
That's a lot of weight in a short time frame. If Webb truly did lose all that weight, he'd be a rare case. Dr. Spencer Nadolsky of Examine.com told Yahoo Sports he's never heard of a case like that in a healthy person with no fluid overload. A loss of the magnitude Webb had in such a short time frame, Nadolsky said, would lead to electrolyte abnormalities and potential shock.
(Webb is listed at 6-5, 195 on Texas Tech's official site.)
Despite the virus, Webb said he never missed a practice or meeting either. He did miss the game against SMU -- walk-on freshman Baker Mayfield started -- but saw his first action of the season the next week against Stephen. F. Austin. He told the A-J that he was back up to 195 pounds by the Kansas game on October 5, though he wasn't feeling 100 percent when he had to come in and take over for Mayfield.
He'll need to be 100 percent in 2014 if Tech wants to duplicate its 7-0 start from 2013. After the departures of Mayfield and Michael Brewer, Webb is the only experienced quarterback on the Tech roster in 2014 and shone in the Red Raiders' upset win over Arizona State in the Holiday Bowl. If you're a Tech fan in Lubbock and sick this summer, stay the heck away from him.
