A player from The Citadel who said he and his teammates along the offensive line were going for the knees of Florida State defensive players has been suspended indefinitely.
Lineman Victor Hill commented on a story about the game that the team's offensive line had said it "would be going for knees from the first play to the last" against the Seminoles on Saturday via cut blocks. Three Florida State defensive players left the game with leg injuries in the 37-12 FSU win.
"I am very disappointed in the words chosen by Victor Hill who is a member of The Citadel football program," Citadel coach Mike Houston said in a statement. "After speaking at length on multiple occasions with Victor and careful review of video footage of our game from this past Saturday night, I have found no purposeful intent to injure from Vic...or by any other member of our football program."
"In the eight months that I have been the head football coach at The Citadel, I have observed Victor up to this point to be a morally good person. I do not condone his statement or what was implied by his words. The coaches in our program teach the great game of football to be played within the rules and will never condone anyone who is trying to purposely injure an opponent."
According to The Citadel's website, Houston also said that Hill "could return to the team when he successfully demonstrates that he can abide and live by the core values that should be demonstrated by any individuals who have the privilege to represent The Citadel and our football program."
Following the game, FSU coach Jimbo Fisher said he'd prefer to schedule games against "more conventional teams" in the future. The Citadel, which runs an option-based scheme, has cut blocks as a part of its scheme.
