In its September issue, GQ Magazine published a list (Warning: it has some harsh language) of the “25 Biggest Sleazebags in Sports,” and predictably, a few people from college football’s cast of characters found their way on the list.
The highest on the list – at No. 10 – was none other than Louisville head coach Bobby Petrino, who GQ’s Drew Magary refers to as “the perfect embodiment of a good-ol’-boy s—tbag football coach.” Ouch.
Magary, of course, notes Petrino’s brief stint in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons, where he left mid-season and then took a job at Arkansas. Then came Petrino’s well-publicized motorcycle accident and affair with a member of the Arkansas athletic department staff, which led to his termination, so I’d say his place on the list is pretty well justified.
As the list continues, we find Alabama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin at No. 18 where Magary calls him “a baby Petrino” and a “program wrecker.” For those who may have forgotten, Kiffin left Tennessee for USC after just one season with the program, and while with the Vols, he accused Urban Meyer of recruiting violations and allegedly told Alshon Jeffery (now a star WR with the Chicago Bears) that he’d “end up pumping gas for the rest of his life” if he chose South Carolina.
Sure Kiffin’s departure from Tennessee was rather, um, unceremonious, but he is higher on the list than other sleazebags like Alex Rodriguez, Richie Incognito and Josh Lueke, a professional pitcher who allegedly raped a woman. I’m not so sure about that.
Also on the list at No. 21 (just ahead of Incognito!) is Florida State’s Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback, Jameis Winston. The rape allegations and the crab legs incident are brought up, but I’m kind of surprised he wasn’t listed higher on the list. Since he's only 20-years old, I’d say No. 21 is a good spot.
