Miami backup quarterback Kevin Olsen was arrested and charged with DUI and possession of a fake or stolen driver’s license over the weekend.
According to the Palm Beach Post, the 19-year-old Olsen was booked “after 4 a.m. Monday morning” and is currently being held on $6,000 bond.
Olsen was arrested after police were called to investigate an incident at a house in South Miami. Olsen pulled up to the house in his vehicle and asked police what was going on. According to the police report, an officer was explaining the situation to Olsen and noticed that Olsen had "bloodshot watery eyes and an odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath as he spoke in a slurred speech."
Olsen was asked to perform "multiple field sobriety tests" and he was could not maintain his balance. He blew a .04 on a breathalyzer test.
Additionally, Olsen had five different IDs in his possession – two from Maryland, one from North Carolina, one from Florida and one from New Jersey. He told police that New Jersey and North Carolina IDs were legal, but "the Maryland one is fake." He also had the ID of teammate Ronald Regula.
Per CaneSport.com, Miami athletic director Blake Heaps released a statement saying that the school is aware of the situation.
"We're aware of the situation regarding Kevin Olsen and have suspended him from all team activities pending further review of the situation and our analysis of the information," James said.
Head coach Al Golden expressed "disappointment" with the situation. He said he has not spoken to Olsen since the incident occurred.
“What's of paramount concern right now is just his well-being, helping him through this. I just want to make sure that he's getting the help that he needs and that he's safe - his well-being is what we're thinking about," Golden said.
Olsen, a redshirt freshman, has not played in a game for the Hurricanes but was expected to compete for the starting job this season after Ryan Williams injured his knee in April. Instead, news emerged that Olsen had failed a drug test and was suspended for the last two games of the 2013 season and the 2014 season opener against Louisville.
He was briefly taking first-team reps in the spring after Williams’ injury, but has since been passed on the depth chart by freshman Brad Kaaya and Kansas transfer Jake Heaps.
Golden said last week before the Arkansas State game that Olsen had a “really good” preseason and showed “growth” in the last six months.
“The suspension – just because it happened now – does not reflect all the growth that he had,” Golden said. “I want to make sure we’re clear on that, he’s had a lot of growth here in the last half-year and certainly in the last four months. He has made a lot of progress and hopefully Kevin can continue to do that for us.”
A native of Wayne, N.J., Olsen was a four-star recruit in Miami’s 2013 class. The school has yet to comment on his weekend arrest.
