After TCU lost 61-58 to Baylor Saturday afternoon, TCU head coach Gary Patterson said he was “sort of threatened” on the field by a Baylor player before the player was restrained by Bears defensive coordinator Phil Bennett.
Patterson said the player referenced his comments following last year’s TCU-Baylor game where he ranted about BU safety Ahmad Dixon and head coach Art Briles after Dixon was ejected for targeting.
Bennett told ESPN the same thing:
Bennett said the player was upset by comments Patterson made about former Bears defensive back Ahmad Dixon after the past year's game. Patterson was rankled by Dixon's behavior after a targeted hit caused his ejection from the game. Patterson referenced an offseason assault arrest for which Dixon was later cleared.
Since then, video of the incident emerged showing Baylor sophomore safety Orion Stewart, Dixon’s primary backup last season, confronting Patterson after the game ended as fans rushed the field. You can’t hear what Stewart is saying, but it appears to be more than just the usual postgame handshake before Bennett pushes Stewart aside.
Stewart also took to Twitter to respond to Patterson’s “threat” comment.
Without knowing what Stewart said, it’s hard to say if he’s at fault here. It could be argued that a player should not be talking to an opposing coach following the game like that in the first place and if Patterson said he “threatened” him, it was probably somewhat inappropriate.
Briles said Monday morning he has not spoken with Patterson about the incident, but he did say it was reviewed.
Nonetheless, this bit of controversy is overshadowing what was a fantastic game between these two rivals. The Bears overcame a 21-point fourth quarter deficit to beat TCU by three points for the second consecutive season.
We should be in for a treat in 2015.
