For one brief moment during last Saturday’s game between Ohio State and Michigan, the rivalry hatred was put on the backburner and compassion took over.
As Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett lay on the field after suffering a broken ankle, Michigan quarterback Devin Gardner knelt beside him and offered comforting words.
It was an act of sportsmanship not often seen in a rivalry game and Ohio State made sure Gardner knew it was appreciated.
Gardner posted a picture of a letter Dave Claborn, the Director of Development and Community Relations at an Ohio State satellite campus, sent him thanking him for his class and thanking him for being an inspiration.
“You are an extraordinary young man and your example of sportsmanship and true humanity to thousands of young (and older) people this afternoon was, in my opinion, worth far more than any football statistics,” the letter read.
OK, so it was from a satellite campus and not from the main campus. Still, this has to show that rivalries can be kinda civil, right? Guess this can go back to being a rivalry again in the offseason.
