Georgia Tech sends a recruit 52 letters in one day, but not a scholarship offer

Georgia Tech must know something the rest of the recruiting world doesn't.

Last week, Wesleyan (Norcross, Ga.) safety Charles Mack received 52 letters from the Yellow Jackets — in one day. Included in the barrage were newsletters, typed letters and a handwritten letter from each coach. There was no word whether one of the letters required Mack to check a box telling Georgia Tech whether he liked them back.

The crazy thing about Georgia Tech's stalking? Mack is relatively unknown. He's not ranked in the Rivals.com system and his only offers are from Navy and South Florida.

Yeah, he doesn't even have an official offer from Georgia Tech. The school is just in the process of courting him and he'll be evaluated at a camp later in the summer.

But Mack is a Georgia Tech legacy. His father, Charles II, played fullback at Georgia Tech from 1983-87.

"I think it caught all of us by surprise," Charles II told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"For them to send 52 letters through the mail in one day, including a personal letter from each coach on the staff, it spoke highly of Georgia Tech … As an alum, I was excited for my son. Of course, Georgia Tech has a wide array of things to offer. I think it would be a great fit for him. But at the end of the day, it's going to be his choice."

Bombarding a recruit's mailbox as a display of affection is starting to become a creepy trend in recruiting. Earlier this spring, Alabama sent Alvin Kamara, a running back from Norcross, Ga., 105 letters in one day.

Maybe it's something about kids from Norcross, Ga., that make schools want to keep the postal service busy.
