Jameis Winston to announce plans after National Championship

Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston’s decision whether or not to declare for the NFL Draft will apparently come down to the wire.

Winston’s father, Antonor Winston, told ESPN.com that his son won’t announce his decision until after Monday’s College Football Playoff Championship on Jan. 12. The deadline for underclassmen to declare is Jan. 15.

Winston, a redshirt sophomore, threw for 348 yards in Thursday’s College Football Playoff semifinal loss to Oregon – the first loss of his college career. He threw for 3,907 yards and 25 touchdowns this season, but also was intercepted 18 times.

Those numbers dipped a bit from his Heisman Trophy-winning redshirt freshman season in which he threw for 4,057 yards and 40 touchdowns with only 10 interceptions. Still, if he declares, he’ll likely be a first-round pick despite the off-the-field issues that have come up throughout his college career. 

Winston’s father has said in the past that the family’s plan is for Jameis to play both football and baseball for Florida State in 2015 while he earns his degree.

"We want Jameis to succeed with one more year in baseball and two more years in football," the elder Winston said in June. "We've never strayed from our plan that he is going to be in college until he gets that degree."

It remains to be seen if that will come to fruition. After all, the allure of being a first-round pick is hard to pass up.
