After Ohio State knocked off Oregon to win the College Football Playoff title game, Buckeyes fans back in Columbus flooded the streets in celebration.
As championship celebrations often do, things got a bit out of hand and police were called in. According to the Columbus Dispatch, officers used tear gas to disperse the crowd at around 1:15 a.m., approximately an hour and a half after the Buckeyes clinched the win.
The video is really something to see:
Fans had been blocking N. High Street and school and city police attempted to push the crowd back onto the sidewalks, but it didn't work and officers began to employ the use of pepper spray.
From the Dispatch:
As police pushed back one section of people, another group would swarm onto N. High, intent on making the main road a place to party. Shortly after midnight, police began using pepper spray on many of the party-goers. Some left the area with stinging eyes and runny noses. Others stayed and just seemed to move to other areas along N. High Street.
Elsewhere, there were reports of "more than 40" fires near campus — mainly dumpsters and couches. According to the Associated Press, the Columbus Fire Department said it received 89 total reports of fires in the hours following the game.
Additionally, according to the AP, "thousands" swarmed toward Ohio Stadium. Police were able to keep most out of the stadium, but some climbed the fence and tore down the goal post in the stadium's south end zone, a school spokesman confirmed. However, the goal post is a temporary one used for high school games, not one used during OSU games.
