Jeff Towers, the man who could possibly be Rutgers' new recruiting coordinator, reportedly pledged the school $1 million for the football program last year.
The two people with knowledge of the financial commitment and a third person intimately familiar with the deal have identified Towers and his wife, Amy, as the anonymous donors who guaranteed the additional compensation in Flood's contract extension last September.
Rutgers coach Kyle Flood signed a two-year contract extension in September that pushed his contract through 2018. As part of the extension, he received a pay raise that bumped his pay from $950,000 in 2014 to $1.55 million by the end of the contract.
Towers' potential hiring was first reported earlier in the week. He has no football experience and was identified a significant booster to the Rutgers football program. According to NJ.com, the Scarlet Knights are "on the verge" of hiring him.
Flood has confirmed that Towers interviewed for a position in the recruiting department. NJ.com also said many top Rutgers officials, including athletic director Julie Hermann, declined interviews for the report about Towers' possible hire. According to the report, school administrators are set to discuss whether the hire of Towers will go forward.
