Aug 31, 2013; Cincinnati, OH; Cincinnati Bearcats safety Adrian Witty (8) runs in for a 41 yard interception return against Purdue at Nippert Stadium. Cincinnati won 42-7. (David Kohl-USA TODAY Sports)Cincinnati received a boost to its secondary earlier this week when it learned that the NCAA granted a sixth year of eligibility to defensive back Adrian Witty.

Witty missed most of the 2010 and 2014 seasons due to injury. Due to those injuries the NCAA and American Athletic Conference granted Witty a medical hardship waiver for the 2014 season.

“Based on contemporaneous medical documentation and the granting of a medical hardship waiver for the 2014 season by the conference office, the NCAA staff approved the granting of a sixth year of eligibility for Witty to utilize during the 2015 season,” Cincinnati said in a release.

Witty, who has played cornerback, nickelback and safety, has appeared in 41 games in his Bearcats career. Overall, the 5-foot-10, 187-pound Witty has recorded 90 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, and seven passes defended.

Witty earned his bachelor's degree in criminal justice in December 2013 and is working on a master's degree in health education - exercise/fitness.

In addition to Witty, Cincinnati also announced that freshman defensive tackle Cortez Broughton, senior linebacker Clemente Casseus, junior running back Tion Green, freshman linebacker Kevin Mouhon, and senior running back Hosey Williams all received medical hardships for the 2014 season and won’t lose a season of eligibility headed into 2015.

In 30 career games, Casseus racked up 60 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and half a sack. In 21 games, Green rushed for 600 yards and nine touchdowns – including 412 yards and seven scores in 2013. Williams, a junior college transfer, ran for 655 yards and four touchdowns in 2013. He appeared in just four games last season, rushing for 140 yards, before going down with an injury.

The Bearcats, who went 9-4 in 2014, open spring practice on Feb. 27 and will play their spring game on April 4 at 1 p.m. at Sheakley Athletics Center.
