Maryland took a hit to its depth on the offensive line Wednesday.
Head coach Randy Edsall announced that redshirt freshman tackle Derwin Gray has a torn labrum and will undergo surgery on Friday. According to the Baltimore Sun, Edsall said there is “no timetable” for Gray’s return to the field.
The 6-foot-5, 315-pound Gray redshirted last season and was seeing time primarily on the second unit at left tackle but has also seen time with the starters.
Gray, a former four-star recruit, committed to the Terps out of the 2013 class but had to take a post-graduate year due to academic issues. After a year at Fork Union Military Academy, Gray stuck with his Maryland commitment and arrived on campus last year.
With Gray sidelined, fellow redshirt freshman Damian Prince – a five-star recruit in the 2014 class – will likely hold down one of the starting spots at tackle.
The Terps will play their spring game on Saturday afternoon.
