Former Kansas quarterback Jordan Webb has changed his colors.
After spending two seasons as the Jayhawks' starter (when he wasn't injured), Webb decided to transfer to Colorado.
Webb made the decision to transfer when new coach Charlie Weis arrived and announced former Notre Dame quarterback Dayne Crist would be joining him as the team's new starter. Weis also added former BYU starter Jake Heaps, who has to sit out a year, but is likely the next starter in line.
Knowing that, Webb went ahead and graduated from Kansas and has decided to help Buffs as they continue to rebuild under coach Jon Embree. According to the Boulder Daily Camera, which also cites the Lawrence Journal-World, Webb is scheduled to meet with academic advisors on Tuesday and should be enrolled in grad school later this month, though the schools has not made a formal announcement.
He then will participate in summer workouts and be ready for fall camp. Since he's already graduated, he won't have to sit out a season and will be immediately ready to challenge for the Buffs starting quarterback role.
This is a blessing for the Buffaloes, who were trying to replace veteran Tyler Hansen and had no one really claim the job in the spring. Coaches hoped Connor Wood, a Texas transfer, would step into the starting role after showing some good things on the scout team a year ago, but he didn't emerge as much as the coaches would have liked.
Even though Webb wasn't an all-star, he does bring valuable experience to a team that has almost none at that position. Of the five other quarterbacks on the roster, only Nick Hirschman has played in a collegiate game, but he's been recovering from a foot injury, his second in as many seasons.
Webb played in all 12 games in 2011 and completed 179 of 281 passes for 1,884 yards with 13 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
Wood told the Boulder Daily Camera in April that he welcomed the possibility of Webb joining the team and pushing the other quarterbacks.
"Obviously it increases the competition and increases the dynamic of how we're going to do into fall, in terms of reps and that sort of thing," Wood told the paper. "As I said in the offseason, as you bring in good players and better players, obviously it encourages competition because no one's spot is sealed.
"You've got to embrace it. You can't be threatened by it or put off by it. You've got to embrace it and think it's going to be good for the team, if it indeed does happen."
