Last week, Nelson’s father, Pat, told the Minnesota Star Tribune in an email that his son would resume his playing career at South Alabama. However, South Alabama associate athletic director Brian Fremund indicated otherwise.

“In reference to your earlier communication in regard to Philip Nelson, he will not be a member of the University of South Alabama football program. He remains a recruitable student-athlete, however, so no further comment may be made by members of the athletic department and coaching staff at this time,” Fremund told the Star Tribune.

Nelson appeared in 19 games and made 16 starts at quarterback for Minnesota in 2012 and 2013 but decided to transfer to Rutgers after the 2013 season to play in a more pass-oriented offense. A few months after his transfer, Nelson was arrested for his involvement in a fight that left former Minnesota State linebacker Isaac Kolstad with serious brain injuries.

Nelson, who was kicked off the Rutgers team, was originally charge with first and third-degree assault – both felonies – but eventually plead guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge.

Nelson, who threw for 2,179 yards and 17 touchdowns while rushing for 548 yards and six scores at Minnesota, has two years of eligibility remaining and is eligible to compete in 2015.
