If Golson heads to SEC, he'll need to fit grad transfer criterion

If former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson wants to play closer to South Carolina, his home state, it will be difficult to do so at an SEC school.

According to a report from 24/7 Sports, Golson could go to Georgia or South Carolina.

247Sports spoke to sources close to Everett Golson that indicated the Notre Dame transfer would most like to end up at South Carolina or Georgia. The source said that Golson wants to play his final year of eligibilty close to home, as Golson hails from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

However, UGASports.com reported there was no interest between either Golson or Georgia regarding the Bulldogs.

Thursday evening, a source told UGASports that he had heard nothing regarding any interest from Golson or the program's interest in the quarterback, who reportedly wants to play closer to home.

In May of 2014, the SEC lifted its ban on graduate transfers. However, there's a catch to the current rule. Players must not have had any eligibility issues at their previous schools. Look at "D" in the picture below.

Golson, as you likely know, missed the 2013 season because of academic issues. He withdrew from the university and said he had cheated on a test.

He was readmitted to the school in December 2013. In 2014, he was Notre Dame's starter for the majority of the season and committed 22 turnovers. He was battling with Malik Zaire for the starting job in 2015.

Could he get around the clause because he officially withdrew from the university and was readmitted? We've learned to never say never in college football. However, before it even becomes an issue, Golson will first have to choose an SEC school.
