The decision was made more than three months ago, but now it’s official: Kevin Reihner is a member of the Penn State football program.

Reihner, a graduate transfer offensive lineman from Stanford, announced the news on Twitter in February, but the university formally announced the move on Monday.

“We are excited to have Kevin join our family,” Penn State head coach James Franklin said in a release. “He comes to us with great experience at the collegiate level and has the opportunity to make an immediate impact for us.”

The 6-foot-4, 295-pound Reihner appeared in 10 games over three seasons for Stanford, including six in 2014. A native of Scranton, Pa., Reihner will wear No. 68, the same number worn by his father George when he played as an offensive lineman for the Nittany Lions from 1974-77.

“It’s awesome that Kevin can return home to Pennsylvania to close out his college career,” Franklin said.

Reihner graduated from Stanford in March with a degree in management science and engineering and will be eligible to play immediately for the Nittany Lions at a position that sorely lacked depth and struggled to keep quarterback Christian Hackenberg upright last season.

Coming off a 7-5 season, the Nittany Lions will open up year two under Franklin on the road at Temple on Sept. 5.
