Dave Clawson didn't appreciate Stephen Colbert's Wake Forest joke

(AP Photo/Garry Jones)Comedian Stephen Colbert gave Wake Forest’s commencement address last month and took a playful jab at the Demon Deacons’ recent lack of success in athletics.

"Still, while Wake has been a trailblazer, this is a school that respects tradition," Colbert said. "Traditions like rolling the Quad with toilet paper after big wins. And this is actually an eco-friendly tradition because, looking at this season’s win-loss record, you guys saved a lot of paper."

The quip drew some nervous laughter from the crowd, but football coach Dave Clawson, whose team went 3-9 in 2014, apparently wasn’t too pleased and Colbert’s ratings as the new host of “The Late Show” on CBS will take a brief hit because of it.

“I won’t be watching his show for at least a year,” Clawson said on the David Glenn radio show on Tuesday. “You invite someone like that, and I’m sure they paid him a fairly healthy sum to be our speaker, and it was not needed and not appreciated.”

After showing his distaste for Colbert’s joke, though, Clawson later admitted that his team has to show improvement in his second season as head coach.

“He got some laughs out of it, which was his goal, but — it is what it is. He spoke the truth. We did not have a good record last year,” Clawson said. “Our students didn’t get to roll the quad as much as we want. The bottom line is that it’s our job to change that, and we’ll get that changed, and I’m fully confident that will happen.

"Did I like that he said it? No, but he spoke the truth. We need to win more football games here, and I’m very confident that we’ll do it.”

Clawson took over at Wake last year after five years at Bowling Green, four years at Richmond and five years at Fordham.

He has a tough task ahead of him to rebuild a program that hasn’t had a winning record since 2008.
