Florida is getting some offensive line help via an FCS tackle
Mason Halter, who played at Fordham in 2014, is transferring to Florida. He was a first team All-Patriot League selection in 2014 and a three-year starter at left tackle for the Rams. He's a graduate transfer so he's eligible to play in 2015 for the Gators.
Halter was already planning to transfer to the FBS in 2015. He had committed to Old Dominion for the upcoming season but said that once he got an offer from Florida, he had to take it.
“I think the coaches at ODU were a little upset, and I don’t blame them,” he said. “I signed an agreement and went back on my word a bit.
“But this was a great opportunity. I could not turn it down.”
Here's his Instagram post announcing the decision
Yeah, you can argue that once he made a commitment to Old Dominion, he should have stuck with the Monarchs. But come on, coaches bolt all the time from the middle of their contracts. If a player gets a better opportunity, why can't he?
He'll have a chance to play right away in the SEC too because Florida needs all the offensive linemen it can get. After losing Rod Johnson to a career-ending spinal condition, the Gators had six healthy scholarship offensive linemen in April. The shortage helped lead coach Jim McElwain to change up the team's spring game from a traditional scrimmage because of the lack of bodies.
