Pitt wide receiver Tyler Boyd is expected to be formally charged with DUI on Tuesday, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.
The 20-year-old Boyd was pulled over at 2:35 a.m. Friday morning after police said Boyd’s vehicle passed another vehicle “with limited sight distance ahead.” Boyd admitted to the officer who pulled him over that he drank “two shots” of alcohol earlier.
A breath test registered positive for alcohol and the star receiver was taken to Jefferson Hospital for a blood test. According to the Tribune-Review, Jefferson Hills (Pa.) police chief Eugene Roach said those results may not be available “for several weeks.”
Roach said that Boyd will also be charged with other summary offenses including underage drinking and “various vehicle code violations” on Tuesday. The courts aren’t open Monday because of Flag Day.
“It is our intent to file on the next business day when the courts are open,” Roach said.
Boyd, a junior, is one of the best receivers in college football. In his first two seasons with the Panthers, he combined for 163 catches, 2,435 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi called the situation “both serious and disappointing.”
“We have high expectations for the young men in our program, on and off the field. Tyler understands that and knows he must be responsible for his actions,” Narduzzi said. “Certainly he will be held accountable to our internal standards of discipline and behavior.”
Boyd has been projected as a first-round selection in the 2016 NFL draft.
