Three charges against Georgia linebacker Davin Bellamy – including DUI – were dropped last month.
According to the Athens Banner-Herald, the charges were dropped because the arresting officer, Kris Ward, was fired from his job. Ward was arrested May 12 for “allegedly sexually assaulting a juvenile several years ago.”
From the Banner-Herald:
Ward was initially suspended with pay, but was terminated after an internal affairs investigation found he violated his oath of office and other departmental directives. He was charged with child molestation, aggravated sexual battery and violation of oath of office.
A day later, Bellamy’s case was dismissed. The explanation, according to a court document, was “the arresting officer in this case has been terminated from the ACC Police Department. As a result the State will not be able to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt at trial and has decided to dismiss the…charges.”
Bellamy, who was charged with DUI, underage possession of alcohol and speeding following his July 26 arrest, served a two-game suspension and apologized in a tweet.
“I have embarrassed myself, my family and my brothers,” Bellamy wrote July 26, 2014. “I will gain your trust back.”
After returning from his suspension, Bellamy registered 17 tackles, two tackles for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery for the Bulldogs in 2014.
