Former West Virginia quarterback Ford Childress is transferring across the country.

According to the Fresno Bee, Childress will join Fresno State in August and is expected to compete for the starting job.

Childress wasn't enrolled at West Virginia in 2014 after he was suspended for the 2014 spring semester and transferred to Trinity Valley Junior College in Texas. He spent the season redshirting and helped coach quarterbacks at the school.

“He is very talented — super intelligent, high football IQ, great feet and talented passer. He is made for Fresno’s style of offense,” Trinity Valley offensive coordinator Clay Patterson told the Bee.

Childress saw time for West Virginia in 2013 as the team had a rotating cast of quarterbacks. He started against Georgia State and Maryland but missed the rest of the season after suffering a torn pectoral. He was 36-63 passing for 427 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions in those two starts.

If he wins the starting job or sees significant playing time in 2015, it will be the second straight season a transfer has been a contributor at quarterback for the Bulldogs. Former Duke quarterback Brandon Connette transferred to Fresno before the 2014 season as a graduate transfer and got snaps in nine games. He shared time with Brian Burrell, who started all of Fresno's games in 2014.

Burrell is no longer with the team, so Childress, a former four-star recruit, will be competing with Zach Greenlee, Chason Virgil and Kilton Anderson for the starting job.
