If former Florida running back Adam Lane transferred in order to be closer to home, it appears he needs a refresher on his U.S. geography.
According to the New Orleans Times-Picayune, Lane “plans to join the Eastern Kentucky football program.” The news comes after Gators coach Jim McElwain said in a release Sunday that Lane, a native of Winter Haven, Fla., “has some family issues he is dealing with and wants to be closer to home.”
Eastern Kentucky University is located in Richmond, Ky., which is more than 800 miles from Lane’s listed hometown (Winter Haven) from his Gators player biography. Meanwhile, the University of Florida’s Gainesville campus is only 130 miles or so north of Winter Haven.

Location semantics aside, the Times-Picayune is reporting that Lane “has texted former teammates regarding his plans” to transfer to Eastern Kentucky, an FCS program that plays in the Ohio Valley Conference. Since Lane, a redshirt sophomore, is dropping down a level competition, he won’t have to sit out a year of competition.
The 5-foot-7, 222-pound Lane played sparingly (eight rushes, 72 yards) throughout the 2014 season, but had a breakout performance with 109 yards and a (now-infamous) touchdown in the Birmingham Bowl, where he earned the game’s MVP honors in a Gators win.
Lane, a three-star recruit in the Gators’ 2013 recruiting class, joins an EKU squad that went 9-4 and lost in the first round of the NCAA FCS Playoffs in 2014.
