BYU’s trip to Nebraska is one of the more intriguing Week 1 matchups, but that game may have already lost a bit of its luster due to suspensions on both sides.
Nebraska head coach Mike Riley announced Thursday that five Huskers are suspended for the Sept. 5 opener. Riley declined to name the five players or detail the reasons for the punishment.
“Obviously, it’s for a team violation,” Riley said, per the Omaha World-Herald. “And then we will be anxious to have those guys back in the fold after the first game.”
With three weeks to go before the game, Riley said he could still potentially release the names to the media before game day.
“Let me think about how to do that,” Riley said. “It will become obvious when the kickoff occurs, so I’ll probably let you know.”
On the BYU side of things, linebacker Sione Takitaki is suspended for the game after being charged with theft.
On top of that, approximately 10 Cougars are expected to be held out stemming from the massive brawl that occurred at the end of last December’s Miami Beach Bowl against Memphis.
