BYU tight end Steven Richards is out for the season.
Cougars head coach Bronco Mendenhall announced the news Tuesday, saying the redshirt freshman suffered a knee injury during practice on Monday.
According to the Associated Press, Mendenhall said Richards was injured when he was running a route and fell to the turf untouched. The injury will require surgery.

The 6-foot-3, 247-pound Richards was at the top of the team’s depth chart and Mendenhall said juniors Bryan Sampson and Theodore King along with sophomore Tanner Balderree are candidates to move up the depth chart.
Coming off an 8-5 record in 2014, the Cougars open up on the road at Nebraska on Sept. 5.
