Montell Cozart will start at quarterback for Kansas when its season opens, first-year head coach David Beaty announced Monday.
Cozart was battling junior college transfer Deondre Ford along with true freshmen Ryan Willis and Carter Stanley throughout preseason camp.

Cozart, a 6-foot-2, 193-pound junior, started the 2014 season as the Jayhawks’ starter, but was benched in favor of Michael Cummings after five games. The two were expected to compete for the starting role again, but Cummings went down with a serious knee injury during the spring game and is out indefinitely.
In six games and five starts in 2014, Cozart threw for 701 yards, five touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also threw for 227 yards and two interceptions in three starts as a true freshman in 2013.
Coming off a 3-9 record in 2014, Kansas opens its season at home against South Dakota State on Sept. 5.
