Popular Mechanics calls Michigan's game against Utah a 'cupcake game'

If Utah needed a little extra motivation for the season opener against Michigan, it might have found it in the most unlikely source.

A calendar section in the most recent edition of Popular Mechanics magazine lists the Sept. 3 Michigan season opener with the note: "College football season gets underway tonight with the University of Michigan in a cupcake game against Utah."

Popular Mechanics magazine called Michigan's game against Utah a cupcake game.

According to Fox 13 News in Salt Lake City, this random mention was brought to the attention of the Utah coaching staff and was subsequently tacked up in the locker room as “bulletin board material.”

First of all, what the heck does Popular Mechanics know about college football? That’s not an insult to Popular Mechanics. I’m sure if Dr. Saturday published a story about, um, popular mechanics, the magazine would question whether we had the acumen to do so.

Moreover, Utah isn’t what most would think of as a “cupcake.” This is a team that’s coming off a 9-4 season and is also a 5.5-point favorite at home against Michigan, a team that finished 5-7 a year ago. It’s also worth noting that these teams have played three times and Utah has won the last two, including a 26-10 decision at Michigan Stadium last year.

Fox's Salt Lake City affiliate asked players what they thought of the assessment from the DIY magazine:

"Our team is always juiced, no matter what," Utah senior wide receiver Kenneth Scott said in a video on the website. "So with that little thing that they put in our locker room about us being a cupcake game, it definitely puts more intensity into the game, just because of that little statement that was made. And plus, we're always trying to prove everybody wrong, because everyone sees us as the underdog. We always have the chip on our shoulder."
