When South Carolina opens its season, Connor Mitch will start at quarterback.
Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier announced the news Tuesday, saying Mitch, a redshirt sophomore, will be under center when USC opens up against North Carolina on Sept. 3 in Charlotte.
Mitch came out on top of a lengthy four-man quarterback battle with junior Perry Orth, redshirt freshman Michael Scarnecchia and true freshman Lorenzo Nunez. The 6-foot-3, 211-pound Mitch played briefly in two games last season, completing 2-of-6 passes for 19 yards.
A native of Raleigh, N.C., Mitch was a Rivals.com four-star prospect (No. 248 overall) coming out of the 2013 recruiting class. He was ranked as the 13th-best pro-style quarterback and the seventh best player in North Carolina in his class.
Mitch follows in the footsteps of Dylan Thompson, last year’s starter who led the Gamecocks to a 7-6 record while throwing for 3,564 yards, 26 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.
