"William Stanback has been dismissed from the football team for continuous failure to comply with athletic policy and team rules," the statement read.

The school did not give a specific reason for the dismissal, but ESPN's Joe Schad cited sources saying it was for multiple failed marijuana tests.

Stanback, a junior, was an First Team All-AAC player a year ago after rushing for 697 yards and 10 touchdowns. He did deal with several injuries last season, but was ready for a fresh start behind a seasoned offensive line.

"I dealt with injuries last year and ... it kind of took my confidence a little bit down," Stanback told the Orlando Sentinel in August. "And this year, I have all the abilities and tools and teammates to push me to do what I have to do in leading this team to another conference championship."

However, he’s only played in two games this season and had 12 rushes for 11 yards and one catch for three yards. His play is a microcosm of the Knights' offensive play as a whole this season. The Knights have managed just 36 points, which is the worst in the AAC and Stanback had been surpassed by freshman Taj McGowan, who has 35 carries for 111 yards.

Stanback told Schad he would transfer, sit out a season and play a final year as a redshirt senior.

Coach George O'Leary is scheduled to address the media following Tuesday’s practice.
