Texas State defensive coordinator John Thompson has resigned. Bobcats head coach Dennis Franchione“Coach Thompson made a decision that he thought that it was in the best interest of the program that he resign," Franchione said in a statement. “That was not my choice or under my direction. It was under his. We appreciate what he has done and given to this program. We will close ranks, march on and make the appropriate decisions for us to get better.”
Through four games, Texas State has allowed an average of 579.5 yards and 49.5 points per game. Saturday’s loss to Houston dropped the team’s record to 1-3.
Thompson was in his second season with the program after two years as defensive coordinator at Arkansas State. He has also served as defensive coordinator at Ole Miss, South Carolina, Florida, Arkansas, Memphis, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech, Georgia State and Northwestern State. Additionally, Thompson was the head coach at East Carolina in 2003 and 2004.
The Bobcats have a bye this week before opening Sun Belt Conference play at UL Lafayette on Oct. 10. The program has yet to announce an interim or replacement defensive coordinator.
