No. 19 Toledo cut into UMass’ third quarter lead on a peculiar touchdown play.

Rockets quarterback Phillip Ely went with a hard count on a first down play at the UMass 15 and drew Minutemen defensive end De’Sean Downey offside.

Toledo snapped the ball while Downey was past the line of scrimmage, so Ely alertly knew he had a chance to take a shot at the end zone because of the penalty.

The Toledo offensive line wasn’t so sure what was happening, but Ely still evaded pressure and found Alonzo Russell in the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown.

It wasn’t pretty, but it sure was effective. Seriously, watch how silly this whole thing looks!

That touchdown cut UMass’ lead to 28-24 midway through the third.

Toledo, which is undefeated and at the top of the MAC standings, trailed 28-10 at halftime before storming back in the second half. The Rockets scored touchdowns on their first five second-half possessions, including four Ely touchdown passes, and went on to win 51-35.
