The injury focus on Oregon QB Vernon Adams has been centered around a dirty hit he received in the fourth quarter of his team's opening game against Eastern Washington. But the transfer is also dealing with another injury.

According to ESPN, Adams has an injury to his right index finger. He throws right-handed. He's expected to play on Saturday against Michigan State and according to the source cited in the article, Adams suffered the injury against Eastern Washington.

Adams left the game early in the fourth quarter after he got it in the head – seemingly intentionally – while sliding to the ground. He was dazed and didn't play another snap in Oregon's blowout win. EWU linebacker John Kreifels, the man who made the hit, was suspended by the team for Week 2.

Adams transferred to Oregon from Eastern Washington after the 2014 season. Before he left the game he had 246 yards passing and two touchdowns and had rushed for 94 yards on 14 carries.

Penn State's Troy Apke completely whiffs on blocked punt attempt (Video)

Penn State’s special teams unit missed a big opportunity to give the struggling Nittany Lions offense great field position early in Saturday’s game against Buffalo.

After the PSU defense stopped the Bulls’ offense on the first drive of the game, sophomore safety Troy Apke had an unblocked path to Buffalo punter Tyler Grassman, but somehow completely whiffed on what should have been a blocked punt.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Apke had a clear shot for a big play, but basically ran past Grassman. Either he was surprised at how easily he got to the punter, or he didn’t want to get a roughing penalty.

Nonetheless, it was a big missed opportunity for the Nittany Lions, who struggled for much of the game before pulling away for a 27-14 win.

Jim Harbaugh had a fun tantrum in his Michigan home debut (Video)

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh hasn't lost his ability to throw a good tantrum.

Look at the fire he spat during his team's game against Oregon State on Saturday.

Harbaugh was mad about a roughing the kicker call that went against his team. The penalty gave Oregon State a first down, though Harbaugh should probably be happy about the ultimate outcome. Michigan forced Oregon State to punt again and the punt snap sailed over the Oregon State punter's head.

The ball ended up going 48 yards backwards and set up Michigan for an easy touchdown inside the 5-yard-line and a 17-7 halftime lead.

Auburn survives upset bid in OT by 40-point underdog Jacksonville State

$

Auburn survived an upset bid by Jacksonville State on Saturday to win 27-20 in overtime.

Auburn, No. 6 in the latest AP Top 25, was a 40-point favorite over its lower-division foe, a team it paid over $500,000 to play. The Tigers did not perfom like a 40-point favorite.

Had Jacksonville State won the game, it would not have been a surprise. It held the lead more than once and, to an uninitiated observer, it looked like it was in the same class as Auburn.

Auburn won the game on a three-yard touchdown run by Peyton Barber in the first overtime. Jacksonville State, which got the ball after Auburn did, got inside the Auburn 10 via a pass interference penalty but a huge sack by Cassanova McKinzy on JSU QB Eli Jenkins made a fourth-down conversion for a touchdown virtually impossible. JSU's deep pass to the end zone was complete, but the receiver, Josh Barge, was out of bounds. Ballgame.

After JSU, a school located in Alabama and not Jacksonville, Florida, took the lead with over five minutes to go in the fourth quarter but Auburn forced overtime with 39 seconds left when quarterback Jeremy Johnson hit receiver Melvin Ray in the back corner of the end zone.

The touchdown and ensuing extra point tied the game at 20-20, a tie that happened thanks to a 17-yard punt by Jacksonville State. The Gamecocks had gotten the ball back from Auburn via a fumble with 3:20 to go but failed to convert a first down.

While JSU had time and one timeout after Auburn tied the game in regulation, the school inexplicably ran the rest of the time off the clock to go to overtime. It's no guarantee that JSU would have gotten in position for a game-winning field goal, but given the original improbability of the situation, it would have been worth it to see if there was any magic left.

Johnson, in his second game as Auburn's starter, made some poor decisions again. He threw three interceptions against Louisville in Week 1 and threw two against Jacksonville State. His ability to decipher coverages is still a huge question mark as Auburn visits LSU in Week 3. While Jacksonville State's defense played remarkably well, it doesn't have near the talent level that LSU's does.

It's a correct and unsurprising statement that Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said after the game that his team has "a lot" of things to work on before it faces LSU. And it's also important to note that Louisville, a team that Auburn had trouble putting away in its 31-24 win, lost at home to Houston on Saturday. While the Tigers are 2-0, it's not an impressive 2-0 at all.

But the early season struggles won't matter if Auburn has a successful SEC run. While the JSU escape will always linger, especially when discussing the College Football Playoff, Auburn can put a large strikethrough over it with an SEC West title. Still, it's hard to call the Tigers an SEC contender through the first two weeks of the season. We'll find out against LSU and Mississippi State over the next two weeks if the real Auburn is better than the one we've seen so far.

Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire out for season with fractured ankle

Notre Dame took a big hit to its offense during the third quarter Saturday at Virginia.

Already deep in Virginia territory, the Irish dialed a quarterback run by Malik Zaire but the redshirt sophomore’s right ankle was rolled up awkwardly following a tackle from Cavs safety Kelvin Rainey.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly announced after the game that Zaire fractured his ankle on the play and will miss the remainder of the season.

(Warning: the injury is graphic)

Zaire, who had 115 yards and a touchdown throwing and 87 yards rushing before the injury, needed help leaving the field and was taken into the locker room on a cart.

With Zaire out, the Irish went to redshirt freshman DeShone Kizer at quarterback. Coming into the game, Kizer had just one career passing attempt, but he threw the game-winning touchdown pass to Will Fuller in the final minute to give the Irish a 34-27 win.

Kizer was third on Notre Dame’s depth chart in 2014 behind Zaire and Everett Golson, who is now the starter at Florida State after transferring in the offseason. The Irish also have true freshman Brandon Wimbush, a four-star recruit, on the quarterback depth chart.

Notre Dame loses Malik Zaire for season, but beats Virginia on TD in final minute

$

Notre Dame escaped Virginia with a 34-27 win Saturday afternoon on a dramatic late-game touchdown but it proved bittersweet.

Starting quarterback Malik Zaire suffered a fractured ankle and is done for the season, Irish coach Brian Kelly announced after the game.

The redshirt sophomore’s right ankle was rolled up on awkwardly on a tackle from Cavs safety Kelvin Rainey in the third quarter.

The game itself ended in thrilling fashion, with backup quarterback DeShone Kizer connecting with Will Fuller in stride on a beautiful 39-yard pass down the left sideline. Fuller got behind the Virginia secondary and tiptoed inside the pylon for the game-winning score.

The Kizer-to-Fuller heroics came after the Irish blew a 26-14 second-half lead that followed the Zaire injury.

On Kizer’s first play at quarterback, he handed off to running back C.J. Prosise for a 24-yard touchdown run, extending Notre Dame’s lead to 26-14 with 54 seconds remaining in the third.

Virginia would not go down lightly, however.

On the ensuing drive, the Cavs needed just six plays and 2:12 to go 75 yards to cut into the lead via a Matt Johns touchdown run. Johns, who threw for 289 yards and two touchdowns on the afternoon, found his favorite target Canaan Severin (11 catches, 153 yards) on multiple occasions to move the ball down the field.

With the momentum on its side, Virginia quickly forced the Irish to punt on the next possession. And when it looked like the Cavs was poised take the lead, Johns was strip sacked by KeiVarae Russell on a third-and-three from the Notre Dame 38.

The Irish recovered, but the Cavs defense didn’t allow Notre Dame to gain a yard on the next possession. After a punt, Johns put together an impressive 13-play, 80-yard drive to give the Cavs a 27-26 lead with 1:54 to go.

Johns hit six different receivers on the drive – three times to Severin and twice to Olamide Zaccheus – but his biggest throw was to Ryan Santoro for 34 yards down the right sideline. Santoro’s first career catch set up a first and goal and running back Albert Reid finished the drive off with a 1-yard score.

Notre Dame regained possession with 1:54 to go and quickly made it into Virginia territory after converting a fourth-and-short play via a Kizer run. Kizer then hit Prosise for gains of 19 and one on the next two plays, setting up the improbable game-winner to Fuller (five catches, 124 yards, 2 TDs) with just 12 seconds remaining on the clock.

It may only be Week 2, but pulling out this win could potentially pay dividends if Notre Dame makes a College Football Playoff run. That will be tough without Zaire.

Kizer, a redshirt freshman, showed his arm strength on the pass to Fuller, but it remains to be seen if he's as polished as Zaire.

Zaire struggled a bit (completing only 7-of-18 passes) before his injury, but he's a guy who pushed and eventually succeeded the accomplished Everett Golson for the Irish last year. With Golson now starting at Florida State, it's pretty clear Brian Kelly and the Irish coaching staff thought they had a chance to do big things with Zaire running the show.

With Zaire now done for the year, Notre Dame's College Football Playoff hopes took a huge hit.

Arkansas falls at home to Toledo 16-12

$
0
0

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema said it was a "major statement" that the SEC had 10 teams in the AP Top 25 entering Week 2. Well, his team won't be in the AP poll when it's next unveiled on Sunday.

Arkansas' offense struggled to get anything going on Saturday at home against Toledo and fell 16-10. The Hogs had a lengthy drive in the fourth quarter with a chance to take the lead. But quarterback Brandon Allen's passes on third and fourth down went out of the back of the end zone. OK, the third down pass did. The fourth down pass hit the crossbar.

The turnover on downs gave Toledo the ball back with less than two minutes remaining. Arkansas forced a three-and-out, and got the ball back with under a minute remaining and no timeouts after Toledo conceded a safety to kill time and gain field position. Allen got two shots at the end zone from inside the 20 in the final six seconds. Both of those passes also flew out of the end zone.

Arkansas was considered by many to be a team on the rise entering 2015. And while the Hogs would have to survive a seemingly tough SEC West to stay in the top 25, it's now out of the poll before conference play begins thanks to a loss to a MAC team. It's hard to take talk about the toughness of a conference schedule (and the softness of another team's conference slate) seriously when a team can't get through its non-conference schedule unscathed.

And given what we saw on Sunday, it's hard to take Arkansas seriously as a possible SEC West champion. The Hogs' ground game was ineffective; the team averaged just over three yards per carry. That meant Allen was forced to shoulder a lot of the offensive load. And just like last year, when the recipe included a lot of Allen passes it didn't turn out well.

Allen threw 32-of-53 passing for 416 yards with an interception. Not the worst stats in the world. But as evidenced by the Hogs' 10 points, he couldn't turn the drives into touchdowns.

Arkansas has Texas Tech next week before it starts conference play with Texas A&M, Alabama and Tennessee. The Razorbacks' SEC hopes aren't dead; Missouri won the SEC East in 2014 after losing to Indiana. But if the SEC West and the conference as a whole is as tough as Bielema said it is, his team looks more likely to play the role of spoiler than of title contender.

Oklahoma stuns Tennessee with come-from-behind double overtime victory

Baker Mayfield might just be the magician the Sooners need to get back to prominence.

After a dismal first half, Mayfield rallied No. 19 Oklahoma from a 17-point deficit and ultimately led the Sooners to a 31-24 victory against No. 23 Tennessee in double overtime.

Even though the season is only two weeks old, Mayfield's performance was one of the most exciting of the year as he passed for three scores and ran for one in the fourth quarter and overtime to get the Sooners the improbable victory and a 2-0 start to the season.Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) runs for yardage during the first half of an NCAA college football game against Tennessee, Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 in Knoxville, Tenn. (AP Photo/Wade Payne)

Tennessee jumped out to a 17-0 lead thanks to strong play by quarterback Josh Dobbs, who threw for a score and ran for a score. Oklahoma struggled to get anything going on offense as the Tennessee defense that allowed more than 400 passing yards to Bowling Green a week ago was stout against Oklahoma’s air raid style.

But once Tennessee took that early lead, it struggled to get anything else going as the Oklahoma defense started holding its ground. However, the OU offense didn’t really come along until late in the third quarter when Austin Seibert hit a 35-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14.

From there, it was all Mayfield improvising. On several occasions, he broke multiple tackles in the backfield to either find an open player downfield or scramble for yardage. Then he started getting help from running back Samaje Perine and receiver Sterling Shepard, who both had touchdowns in the fourth quarter to tie the game.

Baker Mayfield scores on a 1-yard run against Tennessee.

Tennessee scored first in overtime, but Mayfield answered on a fourth-down run thanks to a block by Perine to give him a path into the end zone.

Oklahoma WR Sterling Shepard scores in overtime against Tennessee.

Mayfield found Shepard wide open in on the right side in the second overtime, and Shepard jumped over a defender and tap danced into the end zone for what would ultimately be the game-winning score.

Dobbs tried to will his team back in the second overtime, but threw an interception to Zack Sanchez to end the game.

The win gives Oklahoma back-to-back victories against the Vols in as many years, but it also gives the Sooners a much-needed confidence victory on the road.

Tennessee drops to 1-1 and likely out of the Top 25.

Banner with 'Patterson must go' flies over Texas game

Some Texas fans were inspired by the actions of some Miami fans on Friday night.

OK, the plans were long in the works before Friday we imagine. But a day after an anti-Al Golden banner appeared over Miami's game against Florida Atlantic, an anti-Steve Patterson banner appeared at Texas' game against Rice Saturday.

Patterson has come under fire for his practices as UT's athletic director. A report over the summer said he was had cut free meals for coaches and another said he had been souring donors with his actions.

Texas president Greg Fenves told the Austin American-Statesman earlier in the week he was "going through the issues" with Patterson, who has made numerous changes since replacing DeLoss Dodds as Texas' athletic director.

“I listen to everybody that calls me, whether it’s on athletics or statues,” he added during an hour-long session with members of the American-Statesman editorial board. “I listen to everybody who calls me. I’m respectful of their opinion. I don’t try to justify anything one way or the other. But when it comes to athletics, I say I’m fairly new to this, and I’m working well with Steve Patterson and we’re going through the issues.”

Jim McElwain goes off on player, Florida wins on wacky fumble (Video)

Kelvin Taylor scored on a 7-yard run to put the Florida ahead of East Carolina 31-17 in the fourth quarter, but Gators head coach Jim McElwain wasn’t too happy about it.

After he scored, Taylor was penalized 15 yards for making a throat-slashing gesture. When the junior trotted over to the sideline, McElwain berated him in front of the team.

It looked like the Gators had things in hand after Taylor’s touchdown, but East Carolina cut the lead to 31-24 with 3:04 to play.

The ECU defense then forced a three-and-out to give the offense once last chance to tie it. The Pirates advanced down into the red zone, but then this happened:

Yup, the ball just slipped out of quarterback Blake Kemp’s hand on a first down play from the UF 13-yard line. Florida pounced on the ball to seal a 31-24 win.

Oklahoma players leave Neyland Stadium with words and gestures for fans

Oklahoma pulled off a dramatic 31-24 come-from-behind overtime win against Tennessee and then had some choice words and gestures for the crowd at Neyland Stadium.

It started with linebacker Eric Striker, who reportedly yelled a few things to the pro-Tennessee crowd.

Remember Striker had some choice words for the SEC this week saying, "I don't know why people blow gas up their a-- all the time.”

Striker’s trash talking did not go unnoticed by Tennessee coach Butch Jones, who tried to impart some wisdom to Striker on his way off the field.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma safety Hatari Byrd decided to give Tennessee fans the one-finger salute as he headed down the tunnel.

We’ve all heard Neyland Stadium is a tough place to play, but Oklahoma apparently found it very inhospitable.

We're guessing Oklahoma would have quietly headed down the tunnel if it hadn’t pulled off the dramatic win.

South Carolina quarterback Connor Mitch is likely out for the season after suffering a separated shoulder in the 26-22 loss to Kentucky.

The injury occurred in the first half with the Gamecocks facing a third-and-4 at the Kentucky 17. Mitch was sacked at the 24 and fumbled the ball. South Carolina recovered the fumble, but Mitch landed hard on his right shoulder.

He immediately went to the locker room and did not return.

Freshman Lorenzo Nunez took over, but junior Perry Orth finished the game completing 21 of 29 passes for 179 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Mitch completed 4 of 7 passes for 43 yards and rushed four times for seven yards and a score before he was injured.

Michigan State holds off Oregon in big 31-28 home win

$
0
0

One of the most-anticipated non-conference games of the season lived up to its billing. And Michigan State lived up to its billing as one of the best teams in the country.

Behind a swarming defense and a pair of fantastic freshmen running backs, the fifth-ranked Spartans outlasted No. 7 Oregon 31-28 – but it wasn’t easy.

Oregon battled the Spartans all the way down to the final minutes, but the Spartans defense forced the Ducks to turn it over on downs with just over a minute to go to seal the win.

It was a back-and-forth affair that featured playmakers on both sides of the ball. For Oregon, Eastern Washington transfer Vernon Adams started off fast, completing 4-of-6 passes for 52 yards to lead the Ducks on a 13-play, 75-yard scoring drive to begin the game.

MSU quickly responded. Redshirt freshman tailback Madre London reeled off a 62-yard run on the Spartans’ first offensive play and Connor Cook hit Josiah Price for a 12-yard touchdown two plays later.

The Spartans went ahead 14-7 a quarter later when Cook hit Aaron Burbridge for a 17-yard score following an Adams interception – his first of two in the first half.EAST LANSING, MI - SEPTEMBER 12: The Michigan State Spartans react after defeating the Oregon Ducks 31-28 at Spartan Stadium on September 12, 2015 in East Lansing, Michigan. (Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)

After forcing a Michigan State three-and-out to open the second half, the explosive Bralon Addison, back from a knee injury that cost him the 2014 season, brought a punt back 81 yards to tie things up at 14 for Oregon.

Even after the mometum swing provided by Addison’s big play, Michigan State was the better team in the third. Behind a stellar, veteran offensive line, true freshman L.J. Scott went to work and scored on a six-yard run and the Spartans also added a field goal later in the third.

Oregon cut the lead down to 24-21, but Scott scored again on a 38-yard scamper early in the fourth to put the lead back to 10, 31-21.

With the Spartans defense playing at a high level, the game looked out of reach until Adams hit Byron Marshall for a 15-yard score with 3:25 to play. The Ducks then forced a three-and-out and had a tremendous chance to go ahead, but Adams overthrew a wide open Marshall with just over a minute to play.

After just missing a go-ahead score, Michigan State followed with a sack and forced an incomplete pass on fourth down to pull out the win.

The win was a huge one for Michigan State, providing an important resume booster for the eyes of the College Football Playoff committee. Connor Cook was his usual reliable self with 192 yards and two scores through the air, but the Spartans rushing attack was the story. The running back position was a major question mark coming into the season, but MSU has two studs in London (103 yards) and Scott (76 yards, 2 TDs).

Though it allowed Oregon to gain 432 yards, the MSU defense lived up to its reputation and came up with timely stops when it mattered the most.

It’s a tough loss for Oregon, but not one that should be treated as the end of the world. It came into a hostile environment with an inexperienced quarterback in Adams and fought to the final minute.

Adams shook off an injured finger and two early interceptions to show that he’s the real deal, finishing with 309 passing yards and making several highlight reel plays. He is never going to quite fill the shoes that Marcus Mariota left behind, but for a guy who arrived on campus less than a month ago, he did just fine and should only continue to improve with Pac-12 play on the horizon for the Ducks.

Temple beats Cincinnati 34-26 to move to 2-0

$
0
0

Are the Temple Owls the favorites in the American Athletic Conference?

A week after beating Penn State for the first time since 1941, Temple went to Cincinnati and knocked off the presumptive AAC East favorite Bearcats 34-26.

Temple led at halftime 10-6 and Jahad Thomas took the opening kickoff of the third quarter for a touchdown and a 17-6 lead. The return set off a big play frenzy as Cincinnati responded on the second play of its next drive when Gunner Kiel hit Mekale McKay for an 88-yard touchdown.

Thomas immediately answered. On the second play of Temple's next drive he ran for a 56-yard touchdown and a 24-12 lead. Two drives later, P.J. Walker found Robby Anderson for a 19-yard touchdown pass and the Owls had a 31-12 lead.

Cincinnati fought back and had a chance to get the game into overtime after Thomas, who finished with 193 rushing yards and 342 all-purpose yards, fumbled the ball with less than three minutes remaining and the Owls leading 34-26. Cincinnati got the ball all the way to the Temple 5-yard-line but Kiel threw his fourth interception of the second half as Tyler Matakevich made a great catch in the end zone to preserve the win.

It's crazy to say a team has taken control of a division two weeks into a season so we won't go that far with Temple. But it's certainly not crazy to say the Owls are now the team to beat in the AAC East and possibly Boise State and BYU's biggest challenger to represent the Non-Power Five conferences in a New Year's Day bowl game.

The Owls' toughest remaining conference games are against Central Florida, a team that lost at home to Florida International in Week 1 and Memphis in November. And Temple's biggest game of the season might have even gotten a little easier with the news that Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire is out for the season. The Owls face the Irish on Halloween.

Yes, that's a lot of projecting. But Temple, a team expelled from the Big East in 2004 – the conference's remains became the base of the AAC   looks like its on the fast track to the fifth bowl game in program history and it's best one since the 1934 Sugar Bowl.

Winners and Losers: The SEC's run of 10 ranked teams was brief

$
0
0

Week 2 started with a record 10 SEC teams in the AP top 25. The discussion of the conference's strength intensified when Arkansas coach Bret Bielema lauded his team's inter-conference strength of schedule and the depth of the conference that had just four teams outside the top 25.

Now, as the second weekend of college football is over, we can all agree that the SEC isn't head and shoulders above the rest of the college football. A week after we wondered if the Pac-12 was up to snuff to being considered the best conference in the country, it's now time to put the spotlight on the SEC.

Let's start with Bielema's team, which fell to Toledo at home 16-12. With the vaunted Arkansas power run game held to just over three yards a carry on 31 attempts, quarterback Brandon Allen threw the ball over 50 times. Yes, a Bielema team threw the ball over 50 times. In fact, Allen's 53 pass attempts were the most a Bielema quarterback has ever attempted.

While discussing his conference's excellence, Bielema also made sure to point out that Ohio State had just one ranked team (Michigan State) on its schedule for the rest of the season. The comment was true, though it was yet another example of getting too caught up in polls so early in the season. There's way too much movement and voters are relying too much on prediction rather than performance.

Many believed Arkansas was a threat for the SEC West in 2015 after it won two conference games and a bowl game over its final four games of 2014. Yet nothing you saw on Saturday would make you believe the Hogs have a chance in such an "unprecedented" conference.

Arkansas will surely end up outside the top 25 on Sunday. Auburn will likely still be in, though it's hard to consider the Tigers a top-10 team after the way they struggled against FCS-level Jacksonville State.

Auburn escaped with a 27-20 overtime win – wouldn't you have loved to see JSU go for the win at the end of regulation? – though a Jacksonville State win wouldn't have been a fluke. The Gamecocks hung with a team considered one of the two best in the SEC West and forced quarterback Jeremy Johnson into two more bad interceptions.

Johnson entered his first full season as a starter to much fanfare. He's a dynamic athlete who feels like a perfect fit for coach Gus Malzahn's offense. But he's thrown five interceptions over the first two games of the season. If that rate continues, Auburn will be incredibly lucky to survive September games against LSU and Mississippi State and not end the month 2-2.

Meanwhile, Missouri needed to rally back from a 17-10 halftime deficit at Arkansas State before holding on for a narrow 27-20 win. For comparison, the Red Wolves lost 55-6 at USC on opening weekend.

So, after Tennessee's home loss to Oklahoma – a game in which the Volunteers blew a 17-point lead – and Mississippi State's loss to LSU, the SEC will probably have seven teams ranked on Sunday. It's not a disappointing number; it'll still be the most teams any conference has in the top 25. But the results of Week 2 are proof that rankings aren't the end-all, especially since it's not officially fall yet.

WINNERS

Dalvin Cook, Florida State: The Seminoles put up 441 yards of total offense in a 34-14 win over South Florida and Cook accounted for 60 percent of it. The sophomore running back put up a career-high 266 yards and scored three touchdowns, giving the FSU offense a boost as it struggled to pass the ball in the first half. Cook scored on runs of 74, 34, and 27 yards to help the No. 11 Seminoles improve to 2-0 headed into ACC play.

Matt Johnson, Bowling Green: Bowling Green put up 557 yards of offense in last week's loss to Tennessee, so Maryland probably should have seen this one coming. Led by Johnson's career-high 491 passing yards, the Falcons totaled a whopping 692 yards of offense in a 48-27 beatdown at Maryland. Johnson, a senior, picked apart the Terps secondary with six touchdown passes – five in the second half – for another career high. Sophomore Roger Lewis, who had 15 catches for 200 yards, was on the receiving end of two of those touchdowns. For Bowling Green, it was the first road win over a Power Five opponent since 2008.

Luke Falk, Washington State: Falk led Washington State on a 10-play, 90-yard touchdown drive that culminated in eight-yard touchdown pass with 13 seconds remaining to give the Cougars a 37-34 win against Rutgers. It was the perfect ending for Falk, who threw for 478 yards and four touchdowns. It was the second-most yards and TDs Falk has thrown for in a single game in his career.

Coach Mike Leach had nothing but praise for his signal caller.

”He had some great plays and tough plays,” Leach said. “He did a good job of taking care of the football. He left some meat on the bones at times, but that’ s one thing he’s really good at, being calm under pressure, leading the unit and keeping his eye on things when it’s tough. He’s one of the calmer guys I’ve dealt with.”

Joe Hubener, Kansas State: Kansas State junior Joe Hubener started his first game as a quarterback at any level Saturday at UTSA and he performed well in a 30-3 Wildcats win. Hubener, a former walk-on, completed 12-of-23 passes for 243 yards while adding 58 yards and a score on the ground. The Wildcats started off slow, but Hubener’s 1-yard rushing score in the second quarter gave K-State a lead it would not relinquish. With Jesse Ertz out for the year, Hubener will be the guy for KSU moving forward. Saturday’s game has to give him some confidence.

Eastern Michigan: Eastern Michigan won its first non-conference road game in 27 years — yes, 27 years — by beating Wyoming 48-29 in Laramie, Wyo.

The Eagles, who were inspired by the thought of making history, jumped out to a 38-7 first-half lead and never looked back. After punting on its first possession, EMU scored on six consecutive drives.

"This morning, I was just excited," EMU coach Craig Creighton said. "We've got a chance to do something for the first time, in this century, right? I mean, that's a big word."

Eastern Michigan, which is 1-1, has not won more than two games in any season since 2011 and hasn’t had a winning record since 1989.

LOSERS

Wyoming: The Cowboys opened the season with a 24-13 loss to North Dakota and then followed it up with a stunning 48-29 beating at the hands of Eastern Michigan.

During the two losses, Wyoming has had a slew of starting players injured, including starting quarterback Cameron Coffman, who suffered an MCL strain against North Dakota, and backup Josh Allen, who suffered a shoulder injury against the Eagles.

“It’s a loss,” Wyoming coach Craig Bohl said. “It’s another one. But we’ve got to move forward, lick our wounds and see who we’ve got healthy to play this next week.”

Ului Lapuaho, BYUAfter BYU quarterback Tanner Mangum was stripped in the second quarter against Boise State, Cougars lineman Ului Lapuaho dove to the ground to recover the fumble. It looked like Lapuaho had clear possession of the ball until Boise’s Chanceller James came crashing in. Lapuaho did not take kindly to this and gave James a forceful punch to the groin as the two fought for the ball.

Lapuaho was rightfully flagged 15 yards for unsportsmanlike conduct. That’s gotta be an honor code violation, too.

South Carolina: The Gamecocks weren't considered to be favorites for the SEC East in 2015. But Saturday's 26-22 home loss to Kentucky was the second-straight time South Carolina has lost to the Wildcats. It was also the first time South Carolina has lost at home to Kentucky since 1999 and the first time since 2009 that Kentucky has won an SEC road game. Oh, and South Carolina QB Connor Mitch could be out for a lengthy period of time with a separated shoulder. Coach Steve Spurrier was frustrated in 2014. 2015 could be more of the same.

Gunner Kiel: The Cincinnati QB will be wondering how different his team's game against Temple would've been if it wasn't for his second-half turnovers. Temple outscored Cincy 21-6 in the third quarter thanks to two Kiel interceptions. He threw two more in the fourth quarter as Cincinnati's comeback bid fell short 34-26. Entering Saturday night, Kiel's career-high for interceptions was three. And now his Bearcats have surrendered AAC East favorite status to the Owls.

UTEP's Defense: UTEP has faced two Power 5 opponents – Arkansas and Texas Tech – in its first two games, and its defense has come up small on both occasions. The Miners were torched for 490 yards and 48 points in a Week 1 loss at Arkansas and then were pummeled by the Red Raiders 69-20 on Saturday. In the loss to TTU, UTEP gave up 674 yards of total offense – 445 through the air. That’s 1,164 yards and 117 points allowed so far in the season. Ouch.

Leonard Fournette shines in LSU's 21-19 win against Mississippi State

LSU’s offense might have finally caught up with its defense.

Last year, LSU relied on its stingy defense for wins, but running back Leonard Fournette showed Saturday that the Tigers’ offense is something to be feared as well.

Fournette rushed for 159 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers' 21-19 win over Mississippi State. The game marked the season opener for LSU, whose game last week was canceled because of weather, and the conference opener for both teams.

LSU jumped out to a 21-6 lead early in the fourth quarter after the defense stifled Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott and the Bulldogs’ offense.

However, Prescott shook off a dismal first-half performance to lead the Bulldogs to two fourth-quarter touchdowns. But Prescott failed to tie the game late when his two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

Mississippi State kicker Devon Bell had a chance to win the game as time expired but missed a 52-yard field goal wide right.

LSU quarterback Brandon Harris, who was making his first start, played well in the hostile Starkville, Miss., environment, completing 9 of 14 passes for 71 yards and rushing five times for 48 yards.

LSU’s win marked the 15th time in 16 seasons that the Tigers have defeated the Bulldogs. The win also gives LSU an early leg up in the SEC West and some confidence heading into its home opener against Auburn next week.

BYU uses another Hail Mary TD to beat Boise State

For the second consecutive week, BYU quarterback Tanner Mangum heaved a Hail Mary pass into the end zone to give the Cougars an upset win, this time against No. 20 Boise State.

The Cougars sealed the contest with a pick-six as time expired to complete the 35-24 victory.

The win marked just the second for the Cougars in the six times the two teams have played. The last came in 2013.

Boise State struggled on offense all night. Even though quarterback Ryan Finley completed 25 of 38 passes for 297 yards, he threw three interceptions. And the Boise State running game, which has always been one of the main parts of its offense, rushed for just 64 yards.

Mangum, who was making his first start after former starting quarterback Taysom Hill suffered a season-ending foot injury last week, completed 17 of 28 passes for two touchdowns and two interceptions. His last touchdown pass came on fourth-and-7 from the Boise State 35 when he somehow found Mitch Juergens, who was double-covered in the end zone.

A week ago, Mangum, who had come on in relief of Hill, threw a 42-yard Hail Mary as time expired and found Mitch Matthews in the end zone to beat Nebraska.

Boise State’s loss means the Mountain West Conference went 0-10 against out-of-conference opponents on Saturday.

Two Utah players shot during altercation Saturday night, expected to recover

Two University of Utah football players were shot during an altercation at a party Saturday night.

Sophomore tight end Lo Falemaka, 20, and freshman running back Marcel Brooks-Brown, 18, were both shot in the torso. They are in serious but stable condition and expected to recover.“Obviously, our first concern is that both Lo and Marcel are going to be OK, which appears to be the case,” Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement. “We don’t have all of the details yet, but it is our understanding that they are the victims in this incident and we feel very fortunate that they are expected to fully recover. It is unknown at this time how soon they will be able to return to the football field, but we are optimistic it will be in the near future.”

The shootings took place at 11:53 p.m. Saturday inside a home where a private party was being held. Three male suspects showed up uninvited and were asked to leave. Falemaka and Brooks-Brown confronted the men, a fight broke out and one man brandished a handgun and opened fire wounding the victims.

The suspects fled the scene on foot and are still being sought by police.

According to a release from the University of Utah, the wanted men are all in their 20s. Two of the suspects were black, one 6-foot, wearing a red bandana under a baseball cap, and a red shirt; the other 5-foot-9, with short dreadlocks under a baseball cap, and a red shirt.

The third suspect was white, heavyset with facial hair.

Utah did not play on Saturday. It defeated Utah State 24-14 in Salt Lake City on Friday.

Kent State's April Goss becomes second woman to score in FBS game

Kent State kicker April Goss kicked an extra point against Delaware State on Saturday night to become the second female to score a point at college football's top level.

Goss, a senior, kicked her PAT in the second quarter of the Golden Flashes' 45-13 win over Delaware State.

"I knew this was a possibility tonight," Goss told Kent State's site. "I've been waiting for this moment for an awfully long time. I felt like I blacked out a little bit when I kicked it. It wasn't the cleanest hit…but it went through, and that's all that matters."

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Here's the video of the kick and the ensuing celebration. A very cool moment.

New Mexico's Katie Hnida became the first woman to score a point in an FBS-level game when she kicked two extra points in a win over Texas State. Hnida had transferred to New Mexico from Colorado, where she later said she had been sexually assaulted by a teammate in 2000.

Hnida offered her congratulations to Goss on Twitter.

Goss was even greeted by the university's president at halftime after making her extra point.

"April deserved it," Kent State coach Paul Haynes said. "She is the first player out there every day at practice and the last one to leave. She didn't get this because she is a female. It's because she has worked hard. Everyone on the sideline was excited for her."

Athlon Sports' most interesting stats from Week 2

$

0

Numbers and statistics are a huge part of college football. Every Sunday, reading updated box scores and stats is like Christmas for fans and media members. Some stats like total offense and total defense are overrated, but each help paint a picture for a team or particular game.

Whether the stats are historic, advanced or just an observation from a box score, Athlon Sports brings the most intriguing, important, historic and bizarre stats from around the weekend of college football action:

11: Total Yards Allowed by Boston College Against Howard

As expected, Boston College had no trouble with Howard in Week 2. The Eagles thoroughly dominated the Bison on both sides of the ball. The offense accumulated 76 points, averaged 8.8 yards per play and recorded 347 rushing yards. But the most impressive effort from Saturday’s game has to be the defense. Howard managed only 11 total yards of offense, with five drives in the first half resulting in negative yardage.

4: Key Notre Dame Players Out for the Year Due to Injury

The injury bug has hit Notre Dame hard this season. The Fighting Irish was considered by some to be a playoff contender, but coach Brian Kelly’s team has a lot to overcome if it wants to be one of the four teams playing for a national championship. Starting quarterback Malik Zaire was lost for the year with an ankle injury against Virginia, which means Notre Dame will enter Week 3 with a new starting backfield after running back Tarean Folston suffered a season-ending knee injury against Texas. Additionally, defensive tackle Jarron Jones and defensive back Shaun Crawford suffered season-ending knee injuries prior to the first game. That’s four key players missing from coach Brian Kelly’s team after two games.

22: Kentucky’s Road Losing Streak in SEC Play Ends in South Carolina

Kentucky’s rebuilding effort under third-year coach Mark Stoops and its bowl hopes for 2015 got a huge boost with a 26-22 win over South Carolina on Saturday night. The victory in Columbia snapped a 22-game losing streak for the Wildcats in SEC play. This will be an intriguing team to watch over the next few weeks, as the Wildcats host Florida and Missouri before a matchup against Eastern Kentucky, followed by a home date against Auburn on Oct. 15.

2: Touchdowns Scored by Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche on Offense in 2015

Who knows how much time Nkemdiche will spend on offense once the Rebels hit SEC play, but the defensive tackle already has two touchdowns through two games. Nkemdiche caught a 31-yard touchdown pass in the 76-3 win over UT Martin in the opener and scored on a one-yard plunge against Fresno State in Week 2. Nkemdiche’s two touchdowns are more than two teams – Akron and North Texas – have scored so far in 2015.

17-0: Tennessee’s Largest Blown Lead in a Home Loss in School History

With a 17-0 lead in the second quarter, everything pointed to a Tennessee victory against Oklahoma. However, the Sooners rallied in the second half and clinched a win after Zack Sanchez intercepted Joshua Dobbs’ pass in the second overtime. The 17-point comeback by Oklahoma was the largest blown lead in a home loss in school history for the Volunteers.

2: Wins by MAC Teams Against Power 5 Opponents

MACtion was in full effect on Saturday, as two teams – Bowling Green and Toledo – scored upset wins over Power 5 opponents. The Falcons’ explosive offense accumulated 692 total yards against the Terrapins, while quarterback Matt Johnson passed for 491 yards and six scores in the upset. Toledo contained Arkansas’ powerful ground attack to just 103 yards and limited the Razorbacks to just three points in four red zone trips in the second half.

1988: Eastern Michigan’s Last Non-Conference Road Win

Eastern Michigan is one of the toughest jobs in the nation, but second-year coach Chris Creighton seems to have the program on the right track. After a close loss to Old Dominion in the opener, the Eagles won 48-29 at Wyoming on Saturday, which was the program’s first non-conference road victory since 1988.

0-10: Mountain West’s Non-Conference Record in Week 2

It was a forgettable weekend of action for the Mountain West. Air Force – in a conference matchup against San Jose State – was the league’s only winner, as the Mountain West went 0-10 in non-conference games. The losses weren’t unexpected according to the Vegas spreads, but the conference missed an opportunity to score key victories. Boise State’s 35-24 loss to BYU is a small setback for the Broncos’ hopes of being the top Group of 5 team this season, while Nevada and Colorado State were unable to take advantage of a home matchup against a Power 5 opponent.

2: Last-Minute Wins on Fourth Down Touchdown Passes by BYU

Two games, two last-minute wins by Hail Mary touchdown passes. That’s quite a way for BYU to open the season. After Tanner Mangum hit Mitch Mathews for a 42-yard score on the final play of the opener against Nebraska, the Cougars’ offense delivered once again versus Boise State on Saturday night. Mangum connected with Mitchell Juergens for a 35-yard score on fourth down with less than a minute remaining to give BYU a 28-24 lead over the Broncos. The Cougars later added an interception return to win 35-24.

412: Combined Rushing Yards by Dalvin Cook and Joseph Yearby

Cook and Yearby were former high school teammates at Miami Central, and this duo had two of the top rushing performances in the ACC in Week 2. Cook carried the Florida State offense against USF by recording 266 yards and three touchdowns on 30 attempts. Yearby rushed for 146 yards and a score in Miami’s 44-20 victory over FAU. Both players averaged at least eight yards per carry and are two of the nation’s biggest rising stars at running back.
