Central Michigan defensive lineman Mitch Stanitzek was ejected during the first half of Saturday’s game against Syracuse after a late hit against quarterback Eric Dungey.

Dungey was already being tackled after releasing a touchdown pass to Dontae Strickland when Stanitzek struck Dungey helmet-to-helmet.

Central Michigan DL Mitch Stanitze was ejected after a helmet-to-helmet hit on Syracuse QB Eric Dungey.

Dungey was down for several minutes while trainers attended to him on the field. He ultimately walked off under his own power, but did not return to the game.

Stanitzek was assessed a roughing the passer penalty and ejected for targeting.

The pass put Syracuse up 17–3 with 9:20 left in the half. Dungey completed 3 of 6 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown and added 50 yards and a score on the ground before leaving the contest.

Miami fans fly another 'Fire Al Golden' banner over Sun Life Stadium (Photo)

Another week, another anti-Al Golden banner at a Miami football game.

Only eight days after a “Make Miami Great Again – Butch Davis 2016” banner flew above Miami’s game at Florida Atlantic, a new banner calling for Golden to lose his job flew above Sun Life Stadium before the Hurricanes’ game against Nebraska.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

This one reads: “C’mon, #FireAlGolden. These Banners Are Expensive.”

With this season’s 2-0 start for the Hurricanes, Golden, now in his fifth season, has a 30-22 (16-16 ACC) record and hasn’t won a bowl game during his tenure as Miami’s head coach.

That doesn’t quite meet the lofty standards of the Miami fan base, and some fans have been calling for him to lose his job for quite a few seasons.

Prior to last year’s home game against Cincinnati, a “FIRE AL GOLDEN SAVE THE U” banner flew over Sun Life Stadium.

Maybe a win over Nebraska will put Golden back into the good graces of disgruntled Miami fans.

UConn fakes game-tying field goal attempt against Mizzou, throws INT (Video)

$

UConn did not want to go to overtime against Missouri. And instead of trying a game-tying field goal attempt with less than a minute left, the Huskies decided to go for the fake field goal.

It failed spectacularly and Mizzou held on for a 9-6 win.

The Huskies lined up for a 42-yard field goal on 4th and 4. Backup quarterback Tim Boyle was the holder and he faked a handoff to kicker Bobby Puyol. He then launched a pass down the field. This is what happened.

While the field goal attempt was centered it was between the preferred ranges of UConn's two kickers. Puyol's season-long field goal was 39 yards and kicker Michael Tarbutt had missed a 49-yard field goal attempt earlier in the game. The no-man's zone might have played into UConn coach Bob Diaco's thinking, along with a blocked PAT earlier in the game. But Missouri was ready for the fake – and just like Auburn in Week 2 – survived a huge upset scare at home.

UConn got the ball with 4:33 left after Missouri went for it on 4th-and-6 inside UConn territory. The pass by quarterback Drew Lock to the end zone fell incomplete and the Huskies had the opportunity to tie or potentially win the game.

Missouri likely made the decision to go for it on fourth down because of the excellence of its defense. Or, if you'd prefer, the porous UConn offense. Before the final drive the Huskies had converted two third downs all game.

But if UConn's offense was porous, Missouri's deserves a worse adjective. The Huskies were one of the worst offensive teams in FBS in 2014. Missouri's offense, which was maddening at times for Tiger fans in 2014, looks to have taken a step back.

Part of that is the injuries to Mizzou running backs. Russell Hansbrough, the team's leading rusher in 2014, missed Saturday's game and other Missouri backs are also dealing with injuries. Four got carries against UConn and Ish Witter was the team's leading rusher with 17 carries for 54 yards.

Quarterback play has also been a serious issue as well. While Auburn's Jeremy Johnson has gotten a lot of attention for throwing five interceptions in two games, Mizzou's Maty Mauk now has four interceptions and has thrown one in each of the three games. While Tiger fans want freshman Lock to become the full-time quarterback, it's clear that the Missouri playbook is slimmed down while Lock is in the game.

The offensive struggles will need to be fixed – and fixed quickly – for Missouri to win a third-straight SEC East title. The defense looks to be one of the best in the conference yet again, but it can't continue to carry a hobbling offense for much longer, especially as SEC play begins in Week 4 against the Tigers vs. Kentucky.

(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)Ohio State defensive back Damon Webb has been suspended, the program announced before Saturday’s game against Northern Illinois.

The suspension for Webb is due to a violation of athletic department policy.

Webb, a sophomore, has been the Buckeyes’ primary nickel cornerback and has eight tackles through two games this season.

The Detroit native played mainly on special teams for the Buckeyes in 2014 before moving into a more prominent role on defense this season.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

The program did not offer a timetable for Webb’s potential return to the team.

Webb was a heralded recruit for the Buckeyes in their 2014 class. He held a four-star rating and was considered the 40th-best recruit in the country by Rivals.com. Rivals also rated Webb as the second-best player from Michigan and the fifth-best cornerback in the 2014 class.

Nevada isn’t going to beat Texas A&M, but it did have one of the best highlights of the game.

With Nevada down 38-13, receiver Hasaan Henderson, who was being tackled in the end zone, managed to reach around his defender and pull in a touchdown catch with one hand.

The ball appeared to roll down Henderson’s forearm before he secured it for the score.

We’ve seen some pretty awesome catches this Saturday, but this is right up there.

Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield accounts for 572 yards, 6 TDs in win over Tulsa

Baker Mayfield put on a show in Oklahoma’s 52-38 home win over Tulsa on Saturday.

In a game that was undoubtedly tougher than Oklahoma anticipated, the Sooners totaled 773 yards of total offense with Mayfield accounting for a school-record 572 of those yards – 487 through the air and 85 on the ground. Mayfield also was a part of six Oklahoma touchdowns, throwing for four and running in two.

The Texas Tech transfer got off to a hot start with a 39-yard touchdown run and a 10-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. Mayfield scored twice more in the second quarter on an eight-yard run and a 61-yard pass to Mark Andrews, but Tulsa managed to score twice in a 12-second span to cut OU’s lead from 31-10 to 31-24 at halftime.

The teams traded punts early on in the second half before Mayfield struck again, this time on a 29-yard toss to Jarvis Baxter.

Tulsa was able to respond later on in the third on a Zack Langer one-yard run, but Mayfield and the Sooners defense made sure the score wouldn’t get any closer from then on out.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

After Mayfield’s fourth touchdown pass of the day increased OU’s lead to 45-31 with 40 seconds left in the third, the Sooners defense – which had struggled all afternoon – forced back-to-back Tulsa punts. Sophomore running back Semaje Perine (22 carries, 152 yards) then sealed the win with a 20-yard score.

The win improves the 16th-ranked Sooners to 3-0 on the season with Big 12 play on the horizon. The Sooners have next weekend off before hosting West Virginia at home on Oct. 3.

TCU and Baylor were the perennial Big 12 favorites coming into the season, but Oklahoma looks like it could have something to say about that. The Sooners are much-improved offensively with Mayfield running the show. His skills and poise were on display Saturday. Whenever upset-minded Tulsa cut into OU’s lead, it wouldn’t be long before Mayfield was back in the end zone.

While the offense has looked like a well-oiled machine, giving up 603 yards of offense to a Tulsa team that barely beat Florida Atlantic is not a good look.

The bye week comes at a good time for Bob Stoops’ team to get things tightened up on defense.

Ohio State QB Cardale Jones benched after 2 first-half INTs (Video)

$
0
0

After throwing two interceptions early on in Ohio State’s game against Northern Illinois, quarterback Cardale Jones was benched in favor of J.T. Barrett.

Jones’ first interception came on the Buckeyes’ third offensive snap of the game on a bad overthrow. NIU’s Shawun Lurry had no trouble hauling it in.

Lurry’s 33-yard return allowed the Huskies to take an early 7-0 lead on an Aregeros Turner TD run.

Ohio State’s next three drives with Jones at the helm looked like this: fumble, field goal, punt. Jones’ second miscue of the game came early on in the second quarter.

This time Jones stared down Braxton Miller on an out route. Lurry had the underneath coverage on the outside and Jones simply did not see him, allowing the NIU sophomore to pick up his second interception of the half.

That turnover set up a field goal that gave NIU a 10-3 lead.

On Ohio State’s next possession, Urban Meyer brought in J.T. Barrett at quarterback. Barrett’s first possession resulted in a three-and-out, but he hit Mike Thomas for a 23-yard score to tie the game at 10-10 on his second drive under center.

Barrett finished 11-of-19 for 97 yards with a touchdown and an interception as the Buckeyes held on in a 20-13 win. Jones never returned and finished 4-of-9 for 36 yards and two interceptions.

Jones led the Buckeyes to a national title in place of an injured Barrett in 2014 and edged Barrett for the starting role in a highly publicized quarterback battle in preseason practice. Despite the lofty expectations, Jones has had an inconsistent start to the season.

Jones played most of the season opener at Virginia Tech, but the two split snaps in Week 2 vs. Hawaii. Jones started again Saturday against NIU, but his struggles lackluster play continued.

It remains to be seen how Meyer handles his quarterbacks moving forward.

Notre Dame's Drue Tranquill injures knee celebrating incomplete pass (Video)

Notre Dame safety Drue Tranquill collapsed in pain from an apparent right knee injury while celebrating an incomplete pass against Georgia Tech on Saturday.

Tranquill broke up the pass in the end zone late in the first half. He went to celebrate with a teammate and when he landed he immediately went to the ground.

The sideline microphones from the broadcast captured him screaming in pain in the moments after the celebration. Tranquill played in 11 games for Notre Dame as a freshman in 2014 and suffered a torn left ACL against Louisville. If he's out for an extended period of time in 2015 he would be the sixth Notre Dame starter the Irish have lost to injury through three weeks of the season.

It's not the first time a college football player has injured a knee in that type of celebration. Georgia's Malcom Mitchell tore his ACL when he landed awkwardly while celebrating against Clemson in 2013. And many football fans remember the knee injury that kicker Bill Gramatica suffered while celebrating as a member of the Arizona Cardinals in 2001.

Notre Dame was leading Georgia Tech at halftime 13-7 thanks to two missed field goals for GT.

It appears Michigan State will be without a starter on defense for the rest of the season.

According to the Detroit Free Press, Spartans cornerback Vayante Copeland told his teammates in a group text that the neck injury he suffered last weekend against Oregon will end his season.

"It broke my heart when he texted us and said he was out for the season," safety Demetrious Cox said Saturday after MSU's 35-21 win over Air Force. "It was shocking, especially a younger guy who has come so far. He's making plays, obviously, and it was tough. But it's the next-man-up mentality. No matter what happens, somebody's got to be able to step up and make plays."

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

Copeland, a redshirt freshman, was injured in the fourth quarter in the Spartans 31-28 win over the Ducks last Saturday. The program has yet to officially comment on his status, but if he is indeed out for the season, he’s the second member of MSU’s vaunted defense to go down with a season-ending injury, joining linebacker Ed Davis. Davis, a senior, injured his knee in August during the Spartans’ first preseason practice in full pads.

Copeland had four tackles and an interception in two games this season.

With Copeland out Saturday against Air Force, senior Arjen Colquhoun started and had two tackles. Jermaine Edmondson and Darian Hicks, both juniors, also saw time at corner.

The fourth-ranked Spartans, now 3-0, host Central Michigan next Saturday before Big Ten Conference play begins on Oct. 3 against Purdue.

Washington K Tristan Vizcaino scores TD on fake field goal (Video)

$

Washington kicker Tristan Vizcaino is lucky Utah State didn't pick up on his clue on Saturday.

As the Huskies lined up for a short field goal attempt the play call was for a fake to Vizcaino. He got a little over anxious before the snap and moved early. But he reset himself to avoid a false start penalty and cleanly executed the direct-snap fake for a two-yard touchdown run.

Had Utah State's fake field goal radar gone off, Vizcaino could have been in big trouble. But since apparently no one was tipped off – or tipped off enough to read where the play was going, anyway – Vizcaino was able to get to the corner before any Aggie. He kicked the extra point for good measure too.

The touchdown gave Washington a 17-3 lead over Utah State and the Huskies entered halftime leading 17-10.

LSU's Leonard Fournette takes early Heisman reins with career rushing day

$
0
0

When Heisman voters are looking for Leonard Fournette’s signature moment, they have plenty from which to choose.

And most will likely be from Saturday's 45-21 win against Auburn.

Fournette, who played a little more than three quarters, finished with 19 carries for 228 yards and three touchdowns. The yards and the touchdowns were career highs (he also had three touchdowns against Mississippi State last week).

And all of his three touchdowns were dynamic.

His first came with 2:10 remaining in the first half when he scampered past and barreled over several would-be tacklers en route to a 40-yard score.

That score wouldn’t be the only time Fournette would make the Auburn defense look like tackling dummies he was simply brushing out of the way.

During his second touchdown, Fournette threw a guy over his shoulder as he ran 29 yards for a score early in the third quarter.

He’d add another touchdown late in the third with a dive from the 1-yard line.

Fournette did come up lame on that final score after taking an Auburn helmet to the knee, but it was safe to say his job was pretty much done anyway. He made one more on-field appearance as a kickoff returner in the fourth quarter, but the ball sailed out of the end zone for a touchback.

Fournette was definitely a player to watch heading into the season, but he’s already exceeded expectations. During two games this year — both SEC games — Fournette has rushed for 47 times for 387 yards and six scores. That’s a whopping 8.23 yards per rush against SEC teams.

It’s clear Fournette is the Heisman favorite at this point and with games against Syracuse and Eastern Michigan coming up, he has a chance to strengthen his hold on that title.

Notre Dame's defense stifles Georgia Tech as Irish move to 3-0

$
0
0

It wasn't hard to see the worst-case scenario for Notre Dame on Saturday. The Irish were facing a top-15 team down five starters, including QB Malik Zaire, RB Tarean Folston and TE Durham Smythe. And not only was Georgia Tech a very good team, but the Yellow Jackets run the triple-option offense, an offense that Notre Dame's defense has had a hard time defending in recent seasons.

The worst case didn't come close to happening. Notre Dame's defense absolutely flattened Georgia Tech's offensive attack while QB DeShone Kizer, making his first start, was more than competent as the Irish rolled to a 30-22 win.

How did Notre Dame's defense stop Georgia Tech? Well, the simple answer is obvious. It did an impeccable job of stopping Georgia Tech on first and second down. The Yellow Jackets were 3-of-15 on third down because of the situations Notre Dame's defense had forced it into. Georgia Tech was far too often facing deficits of eight yards or greater. And while the triple option is lethal when it's picking up chunks of yards on a regular basis, it can become feeble in third-and-long situations.

Georgia Tech quarterback Justin Thomas finished 8-of-24 passing for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Georgia Tech had converted nearly 60 percent of its third downs in the first two games of the season. And in those first two games, Thomas had thrown a total of 13 passes. The correlation is obvious. Thomas was forced to throw far too often on Saturday, and as the results show, it wasn't fun to watch unless you were a Notre Dame fan. Georgia Tech had 216 rushing yards on 47 carries.

Kizer led Notre Dame to a win over Virginia after Zaire broke his ankle in Week 2. He hit wide receiver Will Fuller for the game-winning touchdown pass with less than a minute left and kept the connection working on Saturday. Of Kizer's 21 completions, six went to Fuller for 131 yards and a touchdown. Kizer finished 21-of-30 passing for 231 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

And while Kizer filled in admirably for Zaire, another replacement had a fantastic game. C.J. Prosise, converted to running back full-time after Folston's knee injury against Texas, had 198 yards rushing and three touchdowns, including a 91-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that gave Notre Dame a 30-7 lead.

Notre Dame got to the BCS Championship Game after the 2012 season thanks to one of the best defenses in the country. With the attrition on offense, any 2015 run at the College Football Playoff or a New Year's Six bowl hinges on the Notre Dame defense once again. How LB Jaylon Smith and company stifled an efficient offense on Saturday gives credence to the thought that Notre Dame could still make a run at a 10-win season. The Irish still have a lot of work to do, but there's still reason for optimism in South Bend.

Memphis uses a ridiculous trick play for a touchdown (Video)

While trying to keep up with the Bowling Green offense, Memphis needed to empty its playbook in the fourth quarter and found this gem.

Memphis uses a trick play to score against Bowling Green.
Yes, that was a handoff to a reverse to a flea flicker to a 48-yard touchdown pass from Paxton Lynch to Tevin Jones for the game-tying touchdown. The Tigers would kick a field goal with 7:35 remaining to win the game 44-41.

We’ve seen a lot of tricky stuff over the years, but this is certainly right up there.

Ohio State survives scare from Northern Illinois, 20-13

$

COLUMBUS, OH - SEPTEMBER 19: Head Coach Urban Meyer of the Ohio State Buckeyes on the sidelines during the third quarter against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Ohio Stadium on September 19, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio. (Photo by Andrew Weber/Getty Images)No. 1 Ohio State managed to pull out a win at home against Northern Illinois on Saturday, but it wasn’t pretty.

The Buckeyes overcame five turnovers and the benching of quarterback Cardale Jones to win 20-13 behind a tremendous defensive effort. Jones was pulled after his two early interceptions allowed the Huskies to jump out to a 10-3 lead.

J.T. Barrett came in and was able to right the ship somewhat. His 23-yard touchdown pass to Michael Thomas tied things up heading into halftime, but it was Darron Lee’s third quarter pick-six that proved to be the game-winning score for the Buckeyes.

Lee’s clutch play came late in the third with the Buckeyes leading 13-10 on the play that followed a J.T. Barrett interception. The Huskies dialed up a wide receiver screen and Lee fought through traffic, stepped in front of a Drew Hare pass and took it 41 yards to the house.

Lee’s big play increased OSU’s lead to 20-10, but NIU still had plenty of chances to pull off the upset.

The Ohio State defense stymied the Huskies inside the 10 midway through the fourth, forcing a 31-yard Christian Hagen field goal to cut OSU’s lead to 20-13 with 7:46 to play.

As the NIU defense continued to stuff Barrett, running back Ezekiel Elliott (23 carries, 108 yards) and the rest of the Buckeye offense, the Huskies had three opportunities to tie the ballgame – but each attempt failed as they accumulated -6 yards on those three possessions combined. Ohio State was subsequently able to take a knee and win the game.

A performance like this from Ohio State raises quite a few questions.

First of all, the quarterback position may not be quite the embarrassment of riches the nation thought it was coming into the season. Jones played pretty well in the season opener against Virginia Tech, but has looked lost since. Meyer made the right move by pulling Jones (who finished 4-for-9 for 36 yards and 2 INTs), but aside from his touchdown pass, Barrett (11-for-19, 97 yards) didn’t look a whole lot better.

Ohio State has another MAC opponent, Western Michigan, to get its quarterback situation worked out before the Big Ten schedule begins at Indiana on Oct. 3. And despite the weekly chatter about the Buckeyes’ perceived weak schedule, losses will come if they play like this offensively against Big Ten opponents.

While the Ohio State offense was a disaster, the Buckeyes’ array of defensive playmakers came up big. In addition to Lee and his pick-six, the entire front seven was consistently in the backfield and wreaked havoc on NIU’s offensive line, limiting the Huskies to only 190 yards of offense.

If the offense can emerge from its perplexing slump, Ohio State should be fine in the long run – especially with its defense playing at such a high level.

Temple avoids upset at UMass thanks to blocked PAT (GIF)

Temple was staring at a cruel way to end a fantastic start to the 2015 season at UMass on Saturday.

UMass scored a touchdown with 1:20 left to take a 23-20 lead. The extra point would have prevented Temple from kicking a field goal to tie the game. The Owls would need a touchdown. But Temple blocked the extra point and Will Hayes returned it for a two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 23-22.

The field goal had suddenly gone from virtually meaningless to potentially game-winning. And with 12 seconds left, Temple kicker Austin Jones hit a 32-yard field goal to give the Owls a 25-23 win and a 3-0 start.

UMass took the lead thanks to a 16-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Blake Frohnapfel to Jamal Wilson. The game had been 20-17 in favor of Temple since there was 8:41 left in the third quarter. The Minutemen were finally able to get in position to score after five punts and an interception following Jones' third quarter field goal.

The touchdown drive was set up because of a fumble by Temple running back Jahad Thomas, who put the ball on the ground with less than three minutes left as the Owls would have liked to simply stall out the win.

UMass held Thomas in check throughout the game. He finished with 25 carries for 66 yards and a touchdown. Temple QB P.J. Walker threw for 391 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions.

Arkansas WR Jared Cornelius suffers gruesome arm injury (Video)

It looks like Arkansas will be missing another receiver for an extended period of time after WR Jared Cornelius' nasty forearm injury against Texas Tech Saturday night.

Cornelius made a catch in the first half against the Red Raiders and his forearm appeared to break as he hit the ground. He somehow calmly jogged off the field – while in considerable pain – before the next play. We would probably be on our backs and passed out from shock at the sight if the injury happened to us.

Here's video of the incident. It's not pretty, so if you don't want to see an injury, don't click play.

(Video: Saturday Down South)

Before Cornelius injured his left arm the Razorbacks were missing receiver Keon Hatcher for "at least" six weeks after he was hurt in the Hogs' Week 2 loss to Toledo. Cornelius and Hatcher entered the 2015 season as Arkansas' top two receivers. Wide receiver Cody Hollister also suffered a foot injury in practice before the Texas Tech game.

The loss of wide receivers means that tight end Hunter Henry will be an even bigger focal point of the passing game. Henry has more cathces than any tight end in the SEC over the previous two seasons.

Ohio State QB Cardale Jones calls himself '2nd String' on his Twitter page

Cardale Jones changes his Twitter description.Ohio State quarterback Cardale Jones doesn’t appear to be taking his demotion to second string all that well.

Jones changed the description on his Facebook page to: “3rd String QB @ The Ohio State University Oh Wait, 2nd String.”

Jones was replaced by J.T. Barrett in the 20-13 win against Northern Illinois after throwing two interceptions. Jones completed just 4 of 9 passes for 36 yards before he was pulled. Barrett didn’t fare much better. He was 11 of 19 for 97 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

This was the second consecutive week Jones had been pulled in favor of Barrett. Two weeks ago, coach Urban Meyer declared Jones his starter following the win against Virginia Tech and said Barrett hadn’t challenged Jones for the starting role.

However, he hasn’t really needed to as Jones has opened the door for a quarterback controversy all by himself. Maybe, as early as last week.

Cardale Jones changed his tweet after Twitter ridicule. After facing mass ridicule on Twitter, Jones decided to change his description.

Yeah, we're happy that you're easily influenced by Twitter, Cardale. And now we'll just have to wait and see if he was actually being prophetic and he finds himself on the bench for next week's game against Western Michigan.

Kliff Kingsbury: Bret Bielema just got his butt kicked twice in a row

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury is not a member of the Bret Bielema fan club.

Kingsbury didn't hold back when talking about the Arkansas coach after his Red Raiders beat Bielema's team 35-24 Saturday night in Fayetteville, Arkansas. It was Arkansas' second-straight loss to an unranked non-conference opponent after Bielema's comments about the superiority of the SEC's conference schedule and the lack of strength of Ohio State's within the Big Ten.

But it wasn't necessarily Bielema's pro-SEC comments that had Kingsbury riled up. Apparently the Arkansas coach had disapproved of the offensive style that Texas Tech and other teams play. Kingsbury, who played quarterback at Texas Tech under Washington State, is a pass-happy coach who loves to get as many offensive plays as possible.

Bielema prefers a slower-paced and ground-based attack. And Bielema had allegedly smack-talked the style opposite of his to high school coaches.

"That's a program that prides themselves on being physical and the Texas high school coaches convention this summer, he stood up and said if you don't play with a fullback we'll kick your ass and if you throw it 70 times a game we'll kick your ass and he just got his ass kicked twice in a row. And probably next week by A&M as well."

Note the Texas A&M mention in Kingsbury's comments. He served as A&M's offensive coordinator before becoming Tech's head coach in 2013. A&M also runs a similar style offense and Bielema is 0-2 against the Aggies.

The win was likely a special case of revenge for Kingsbury too. His team lost 49-28 to Arkansas at home in 2014 as the Hogs ran 68 times for 438 yards and threw just 12 passes. Against Texas Tech on Saturday night Arkansas had 43 carries for 228 yards and threw 21 passes. Texas Tech averaged over 6 yards per carry on the ground.

Kingsbury didn't reportedly shake Bielema's hand after the game either.

Arkansas entered the season as a possible surprise contender for the SEC West. While the Hogs haven't started the SEC portion of their schedule yet, Arkansas looks nothing like a team that will challenge Alabama, LSU and Ole Miss for the division and more like the team that lost 13 straight conference games to open Bielema's tenure.

At 3-0, it's still hard to figure out Texas Tech. The Red Raiders didn't look too impressive overall in their first two wins. But we'll have a pretty good idea over the next two weeks if Tech can be a threat in the Big 12 as the Red Raiders first two conference opponents are TCU and Baylor.

Sometimes there are plays that you can't adequately describe. Ole Miss' third touchdown against Alabama on Saturday night may be one of those plays.

The snap to quarterback Chad Kelly was high. He tipped it into the air and corraled it as a rusher was closing in. Kelly then flung the ball towards wide receiver Laquon Treadwell, who was surrounded by defenders.

The ball was tipped again and floated through the air. Again. Quincy Adeboyejo was behind Treadwell and the Alabama defenders and caught the ball as it fell to the ground. And then, in the most anti-climactic part of the play, he sprinted for a touchdown. Watch.

The touchdown pass officially went 66 yards and gave Ole Miss a 24-10 lead.

The Rebels' first 17 points of the game came off Alabama turnovers including two fumbled kickoffs. Alabama started quarterback Cooper Bateman but he was replaced by Jacob Coker – Alabama's starter for the first two games of the season – after he threw an interception.

Missed extra point spoils Jerrod Heard's big night for Texas (Video)

AUSTIN, TX - SEPTEMBER 19: Jerrod Heard #13 of the Texas Longhorns scrambles for a 2 yard touchdown run against the California Golden Bears during the first quarter on September 19, 2015 at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, Texas. (Photo by Cooper Neill/Getty Images)Saturday night was a mix of good news and bad news for Texas.

Starting with the bad news, the Longhorns lost at home to Cal, 45-44. But the good news to come out of that loss was the emergence of redshirt freshman quarterback Jerrod Heard.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Heard ended the game with a whopping 527 total yards – 364 through the air and 163 on the ground. That total accounted for an astounding 81 percent of Texas’ total yardage (650 yards).

Heard also scored three times on the ground to bring the Longhorns back from a three-score fourth-quarter deficit.

The game was tied 24-24 at halftime, but Cal exploded for 21 points in the third quarter to take a 45-24 lead heading into the fourth. That’s when Heard showed some serious moxie.

In what was just his second career start, Heard managed to lead the Longhorns all the way back. He scored what should have been the game-tying 45-yard touchdown run with 1:11 to go, but this happened on the ensuing extra point:

Nick Rose made his first five extra point attempts on the night (along with a 27-yard field goal), but the senior inexplicably shanked it at a crucial time for the Longhorns.

The missed extra point allowed Cal to maintain a 45-44 lead and run out the clock, spoiling Heard’s coming out party.

The loss dropped the Longhorns to 1-2, but even after a tumultuous week in Austin, Heard’s performance gives the UT faithful a reason for optimism moving forward.
