Sarkisian tweets thanks for support in first comments since firing

Steve Sarkisian tweets Wednesday night were his first public comments since he was removed as USC's football coach.

Sarkisian tweeted thanks for support and wished his former team well against Notre Dame on Saturday. Sarkisian was placed on a leave of absence on Sunday and fired by USC athletic director Pat Haden on Monday. USC offensive coordinator Clay Helton is the team's interim coach.

Haden said Tuesday that he hadn't yet spoken to Sarkisian personally about the termination. He said he had attempted to reach out to Sarkisian and his agent numerous times on Monday and Sarkisian was reportedly en route to a treatment facility.

His firing came after a second alcohol-related incident in the last two-plus months. In August, Sarkisian was pulled off stage at a booster function after he said he combined alcohol and prescription medication. Haden said that Sarkisian was "not healthy" on Tuesday and wanted to give the coach a second chance after the incident at the August event.

Michigan fans vandalize Michigan State's Magic Johnson statue (Photo)

Michigan fans have vandalized a statue on Michigan State’s campus for the second time this year.

Spartans basketball player Alvin Ellis tweeted a photo of the damage done to the statue of Magic Johnson outside of the Breslin Center, MSU’s basketball arena, on Thursday morning. As you can see, a block “M” and the words “BEAT STATE” were spray-painted onto the statue.

Additionally, a Michigan State spokesman told Mlive.com that other areas were also vandalized, including a brick wall behind the campus’ famous Spartan statue and a sidewalk near an intramural field.

“We are going to be out here for a while,” Tracy Harris, a worker with MSU Landscape Services, told Mlive.com. “This statue has so any details on it, it’s going to take along time to get him cleaned up.”

Though it was spared this time, MSU’s Spartan statue had previously been vandalized with paint in Michigan’s maize and blue colors back in April.

The Spartan statue was also painted with a block “M” Michigan logo back in April 2013.

Michigan State fans also got in on the vandalism last October when the block “M” on UM’s campus was painted green with the letters “S” and “U” painted alongside it.

The Wolverines (5-1), now ranked No. 12 after a dominating win over Northwestern last weekend, host the No. 7 Spartans (6-0) at Michigan Stadium on Saturday.

Former Texas A&M wide receiver Thomas Johnson stabbed and killed a person at random Monday morning in a park according to Dallas police.

Johnson, a former four-star recruit in the class of 2012, hasn't been with the team since he left during his freshman year. He allegedly hacked a jogger in a Dallas park with a "large-edged" weapon in a fit of rage.

From the Dallas Morning News:

“It appears Mr. Johnson picked this victim at random. Absolutely random,” Deputy Chief Rob Sherwin said. “He just attacked him. … It’s just very unusual. It’s quite shocking.”

Police also said that Johnson admitted to the murder after he was apprehended. His alleged victim was described as a white male between 25 and 35 years old. The man, who died at a hospital, was one of four people murdered by White Rock Lake on Monday in Dallas, though the attacks don't appear to be connected. Johnson allegedly killed the man as he was running on the White Rock Trail.

Johnson had 30 catches for 339 yards in 2012. He went missing in November of that year and never returned to the team. He was reported missing on November 14 after last being seen on November 12 and found overnight on November 15 of that year.

According to the Morning News, police have said Johnson was angry about his "situation in life."

He remains in jail as he awaits charges for the murder. Johnson was arrested in 2014 after he allegedly stole his aunt's minivan and money from her.

The aunt told police then that Johnson “had been causing problems in the family for a long period of time,” according to an affidavit.

He declined a jailhouse interview with The Dallas Morning News then and was supposed to go into rehab.

Johnson received probation for the crimes, but court records show prosecutors filed papers last month to have his probation revoked because he tested positive for marijuana and failed to meet other conditions, including paying fees.

Johnson was the No. 4 wide receiver in the country in 2012 according to Rivals and the No. 5 prospect in the state of Texas. out of Skyline High School in Dallas.

It's difficult to remember such a short period where so many crazy things happened that affected one college football season.

In the early evening on Sunday, USC placed coach Steve Sarkisian on administrative leave after reports surfaced that he showed up to a team meeting intoxicated. Early Monday afternoon, Florida quarterback Will Grier admitted to taking an over-the-counter performance enhancing drug. Shortly after that announcement, Sarkisian was fired. And in the evening, legendary coach Steve Spurrier had told his team he was stepping aside to allow a younger coach to take over.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

All of these events had profound effects on their teams and will continue to have an effect moving through the season.

Join Dr. Saturday's Graham Watson and Nick Bromberg as they talk about these events, the repercussions and how everyone moves forward. Auburn coach Gus Malzahn to auction visor for flood relief in South Carolina

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn said he would not wear his signature visor during Thursday night’s game against Kentucky.

It will be the first time Malzahn doesn’t don a visor on the sidelines as a head coach since his days as a high school coach.

Malzahn will be “Visor free for the HBC” to pay respect to former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who announced his resignation Tuesday. Spurrier, like Malzahn, also wore a visor every time he was on the sidelines.

The visor Malzahn would have worn for Thursday's contest will be auctioned off and the proceeds will go toward the American Red Cross and flood relief efforts in South Carolina and surrounding areas.

"Coach Spurrier is one of the all-time greats and his influence on me and my coaching style goes back to my days as a high school coach when I started wearing a visor," Malzahn said in a release. "I'm very appreciative for everything he's done for me and the game of football. He's played a large role in making Southeastern Conference football what it is today and will be missed. Going visor free for tonight's game is a small way to pay respect to Coach Spurrier and help raise money and awareness for a great cause."

Auburn has best offensive showing of the year in 30-27 win against Kentucky

$

Oh what a difference a bye week makes.

For the first time this season, Auburn put on the offensive display many expected to see from the beginning of the season in a pivotal 30-27 win against Kentucky.

The Tigers rolled up 407 yards of total offense, which was more than any game this season, and 255 yards passing, which also was a season high.

Quarterback Sean White found receiver Ricardo Louis early and often and Louis finished the game with 154 yards. While running back Peyton Barber finished with 26 carries for 92 yards, but also had the first and the last touchdowns for the Tigers.

It was the kind of performance Auburn needed to stave off an 0-3 conference start and get some sort of positive momentum. It finally looked like a Gus Malzahn offense.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, it's too late to reverse their fortunes in the SEC West, but the victory does get them one win closer to bowl eligibility. If the Tigers keep playing well, they could be playing for one of the SEC's better bowl games.

Kentucky, which had a chance to at least tie the game late, but squandered the final minute of the game with poor playcalling, was attempting to stay in the race for the SEC East against Florida, which is undefeated, and Georgia.

The Wildcats already had impressive East Division wins against South Carolina and Missouri, but a win against Auburn would have been validation that Mark Stoops had finally turned Kentucky into a program that could compete with the rest of the conference.

It's time to consider Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey as a Heisman candidate

$
0
0

Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey didn’t come into Thursday’s game against UCLA as a serious contender for the Heisman Trophy, but at the end of the night, his name was definitely in the hat.

McCaffrey, who didn’t play the fourth quarter, rushed 25 times for 243 yards and four touchdowns, and accounted for 369 yards of total offense in a 56-35 beating of the Bruins.

The 243 yards were the most in a single game by a Stanford rusher since Toby Gerhart rushed for 223 yards in a game in 2009. McCaffrey’s four touchdowns tied a school record. And his 369 all-purpose yards was a season high in the FBS this season and gave McCaffrey the nation’s lead in that category heading into Week 7.

McCaffrey, a sophomore, had a slow start to the season as he struggled for rushing yards against Northwestern and UCF. However, once he got into Pac-12 play, things changed quickly.

In four Pac-12 games, McCaffrey hasn’t rushed for fewer than 115 yards and has two 200-yard rushing games.

And he’s a big reason that despite the season opening loss to Northwestern the Cardinal aren’t out of the College Football Playoff picture just yet.

Looking at the rest of Stanford’s schedule, there are definitely opportunities for McCaffrey to continue his surge and in turn continue Stanford’s ascent to where many thought it should have been all along.

In the spring and in the preseason, coach David Shaw said he wanted to get McCaffrey more involved in the offense. McCaffrey had been great for the Cardinal between the 20s, but in terms of touchdowns, he was continually subbed out in the red zone. After his performance Thursday, Stanford has to acknowledge that McCaffrey could be a national award winner and in turn they need to treat him like such.

And if the results continue to look like they did on Saturday – both in the stat sheet and on the scoreboard — no one should have a problem with that gameplan.

What to Watch, Week 7: It's gut-check time for Michigan and Texas A&M

$
0
0

It seems like every week there’s at least one gut-check game to watch, but this week two teams are trying to come of age by beating opponents that have owned them in the past few years.

Michigan and Texas A&M are looking at a “Pretender or Contender” situation as they head into their Saturday matchups against Michigan State and Alabama respectively, and the outcomes of those games could have a significant effect not only on the conference races, but on the national title picture.

But that’s not all that’s going on this week. Here’s a look at What to Watch for Week 7:

Game of the week:
No. 7 Michigan State at No. 12 Michigan, 3:30 p.m. ET
This was supposed to be Michigan State’s year to challenge for the Big Ten title and be the conference representative in the College Football Playoff, but Michigan has slowly started to steal the thunder in the state.

The Wolverines, who were supposed to be in a rebuilding mode in coach Jim Harbaugh’s first season, have posted shutouts in its last three games and is a season opening loss to Utah away from being undefeated. The Wolverines are a real threat to the new power brokers of the Big Ten Conference and that’s kind of exciting.

In this game we'll truly see which of these teams is a pretender and which is a contender. Michigan State is undefeated, but it has struggled to distance itself in games against opponents it should defeat handily. Michigan will be the Spartans first quality test of the year.

Northwestern, which came into last week’s game against the Wolverines with the nation’s best defense, was supposed to be Michigan’s best test and it handled it convincingly with a 38-0 win.

Michigan State has won six of the past seven meetings between these two teams, but those were some tough years in Ann Arbor. This game will be a real measure of which team is the best Power Five program in the state.

Game to Watch:
No. 10 Alabama at No. 9 Texas A&M, 3:30 p.m. ET

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin doesn’t wasn’t to call this contest a potential signature win, but we have no trouble calling it that simply because there are so many things on the line. Not only does a Texas A&M win allow the Aggies to keep pace with LSU for the SEC West, it also likely ends any conference title hopes for Alabama and hands the Tide their first season with multiple losses since 2010.

It’s also just a big deal.

For so long, teams such as Alabama, LSU and Auburn had been the power brokers in the conference making it difficult for other teams to emerge. However, Texas A&M has been flirting with becoming a legitimate challenger since the day Sumlin stepped on campus and this game would prove that he can make that leap.

If A&M is going to beat Alabama, it’s going to have to do it in the air. The Tide are allowing 77.3 rushing yards and 264.5 yards of offense per game. The Aggies are averaging 480.4 yards per game and have thrown for at least 300 yards in each of their last three games.

Alabama has won the last two meetings in this series, including a 59-0 beatdown in Tuscaloosa a year ago.

Also check out…
No. 8 Florida at No. 6 LSU, 7 p.m. ET

This is Treon Harris’ time to silence his critics.

With Will Grier out for the season after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, it’s on Harris’ shoulders to continue the 6-0 start that has the Gators alone in first place in the SEC East Division.

And that won’t be easy against an LSU team that is undefeated and has running back Leonard Fournette, the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. Few teams have stopped Fournette, who has 119 carries for 1,022 yards and 12 touchdowns this season, so this will be a tremendous test for a Florida defense that ranks 12th in the country allowing just 99.2 rushing yards per game.

But if Harris can’t get the Florida offense moving, as he’s struggled to do in past starts, the Gators’ defense won’t have the stamina to keep a bruising back like Fournette quiet for long.

Both of these teams are atop their respective divisions, but LSU has Texas A&M nipping at its heels and a much more difficult scedule moving forward.

Channel surf through…

No. 17 Iowa at No. 20 Northwestern, noon ET: Surely everyone thought the Big Ten West would come down to these two teams, right? No? Well, that’s the way it’s shaping up and the winner of this contest will have the leg up in the West Division race. Yes, it’s still early, but there haven’t been many other challengers. Don’t be surprised if this is a 10-7 game.

Arizona State at No. 4 Utah, 10 p.m. ET: The Utes have assumed the title as the best team in the Pac-12 South, but it’s going to take a strong effort to hold onto that claim. Arizona State has had its ups and downs this season, but it seems to be coming together at just the right time. Once again, the Utah defense will be called to stop a high-powered offense, but quarterback Travis Wilson will have to show more than he did against Cal if the Utes want to win this game and remain perfect.

No. 19 Oklahoma at Kansas State, 3:30 p.m. ET: Kansas State was just minutes away from upsetting TCU last week and now it has a chance to really ruin Oklahoma’s season. The Sooners are coming off a bad loss to Texas and need to rebound quickly if they want to remain relevant in the Big 12 race. Oklahoma is the better team here, but Kansas State has played unexpectedly well in the past couple weeks.

Robbins is now facing charges of discharging a weapon on school property and giving false information to a police officer. Per TampaBay.com, the first charge is a felony while the second is a misdemeanor.

Robbins has been suspended from the team per a statement from the school.

USF Athletics is aware that law enforcement’s investigation of an incident that occurred early Sunday morning has led to the arrest of student-athlete Lamar Robbins.

Robbins has been immediately suspended from all team activities, as was the student-athlete previously implicated in this incident. They will remain so as we continue to gather more information through the proper authorities.  We cannot state strongly enough our commitment to the values of our institution and that any behavior inconsistent with those will not be tolerated.

Police believe that the two shared the gun that was alleged to have been shot at 4 a.m. Sunday towards a dorm. According to witnesses, the two players were celebrating Saturday's win over Syracuse.

Report: Minnesota players accused of sexual assault, harassment

$

0

Minnesota football players have reportedly been accused of sexual assault and sexual harassment over the past year.

Per the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, the athletic department has been made aware of the accusations from the 2014-15 school year. However, none of the accusations have resulted in charges per a university official. The school declined to tell the paper how many players were accused of wrongdoing or the players' identity citing privacy restrictions.

From the Star-Tribune:

The e-mail was obtained Wednesday through a records request by the Star Tribune. In an interview Thursday, Hewitt said the concerns were raised over the course of the 2014-15 academic year. She refused to be more specific, saying that doing so could compromise student privacy. She declined to say how many players were involved, the number of alleged victims, where the alleged incidents occurred or to provide any other details. No police reports were filed, a university spokesman said.

The U’s general counsel refused Thursday to provide the numbers of complaints of sexual harassment and sexual assault reported since Sept. 1, 2014, involving allegations against football players, as well as the numbers of alleged victims. The general counsel’s office said that because fewer than five reports of sexual assault and fewer than five reports of harassment were received in that time frame, the data could lead to the identification of individuals and the violation of their privacy rights.

An email citing five allegations was emailed to athletic director Norwood Teague over the summer. Teague is no longer Minnesota's athletic director. He resigned after he was accused of multiple instances of sexual harassment. The email was sent to him on July 16. He resigned August 7. The email included 'two reports of sexual assault 'committed by individual players,' two reports of sexual harassment involving “groups of football players” and a report of retaliation of involving 'a group of football players.'"

Coach Jerry Kill told the paper that he was aware of one allegation against a player and that administration handled disciplinary action.

The report said at least one accusation was investigated by the university. Others were not investigated because the accusers did not want to go forward.

In addition to Teague, five complaints of sexual harassment were also reported against associate athletic director Mike Ellis, who has taken a leave of absence. The five anonymous complaints came against Ellis after Teague's resignation. When he resigned, Teague acknowledged that he had sent inappropriate text messages to two University employees.

North Carolina cornerbacks M.J. Stewart and Mike Hughes have been suspended for Saturday's game against Wake Forest. The two players are charged with assault regarding an altercation on October 4.

According to WRAL, the two are accused of punching two men at an apartment.

Two men who lived at 303 E. Franklin Street were punched, one so hard his nose was broken and he was knocked unconscious, according warrants for the players' arrests.

The two were charged with assault Thursday evening.

“We have been aware of this situation since the night of the altercation and have been working closely with the University and Chapel Hill Police to gather relevant information,” North Carolina coach Larry Fedora said in a statement. “We hold our players to a high standard and M.J. and Mike will face the consequences for their involvement.”

Stewart, a sophomore, is fifth on the team with 20 tackles. He has three interceptions, four pass breakups and seven passes defensed. He was one of four players suspended for the 2014 season-opening game against South Carolina.

Texas mascot BEVO XIV dies

BEVO, Texas' longhorn steer mascot, died Friday morning.

According to the school, BEVO, the 14th longhorn mascot in the school's history, died in his sleep. He was diagnosed with leukemia and had been unable to travel to Texas' game against Oklahoma last week. The school had recently said he was going to retire because of the diagnosis.

"BEVO XIV was so much more than a traditional mascot—he was so big and strong, but he had such a sweet personality and a gentle soul," Silver Spurs executive director Ricky Brennes, said in a statement "He loved the attention that came with being BEVO but was very cool, calm and smart. Like a dog he would come when called by name, show up to the house looking for treats and even roll over on his side so Mrs. Baker could rub his belly. He did so much for his university and community. His last few days provided great memories, but we miss him already."

The school said a search for the new BEVO would begin immediately. This BEVO had been Texas' longhorn mascot since 2004 when he was 2. The Silver Spurs alumni association funds the transportation and care costs of the live mascots.

Spread Options: Dr. Saturday's Week 7 picks against the spread

$
0
0

We went 6-4 in Week 6, pusing our record to 29-25-6. Let's keep the line moving.

Cincinnati (+7) at BYU, 8 p.m. ET FRIDAY: How the heck are the Bearcats a touchdown underdog here? BYU has come back down to earth after its two wins against Nebraska and Boise State. And Cincinnati's still one of the best teams in the AAC. No matter if Hayden Moore or Gunner Kiel starts for Cincy, we like UC in this game.

West Virginia (+21.5) at Baylor, Noon ET: No, we're not calling for an upset here. Rather we're thinking the turnover madness is going to stop for the Mountaineers. Let's consider the last two weeks a regression to the mean. WVU entered the Oklahoma game with one of the best turnover margins in the country. Against OU and Oklahoma State, WVU has turned the ball over nine times. Baylor wins, but it's not a blowout.

Ole Miss (-10.5) at Memphis, Noon ET: Memphis is good. Ole Miss is better. We like the potential over in this game too (70) but really like the Rebels' offense. Ole Miss has carved up teams with bad defenses so far in 2015, and no one is mistaking the Tigers' defense for one of the nation's elite. But if Memphis does pull off the upset, oh man, Justin Fuente will be the hottest name when talking about Power Five coaching searches.

Texas Tech (-31.5) at Kansas, Noon ET: Taking a road favorite in a conference game with this big of a line seems incredibly foolish. Especially a team like Texas Tech, which isn't ranked. But then we have to remember that this is Kansas and the Jayhawks don't have much of an offense. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes will keep piling up the stats.

Louisville at Florida State (-7.5), Noon ET: All hail Everett Golson's efficiency. The Florida State quarterback has helped the Seminoles to an undefeated record because of his lack of turnovers. The Louisville defense may be the best defense he's faced all season, but can the Cardinals hang with FSU on offense? Remember, Florida State was favored by more against Miami.

Pitt at Georgia Tech (-3.5), 12:30 p.m. ET: This is our weekly hunch pick. The Yellow Jackets' preseason expectations are as lofty as a skyscraper now. And Pitt has put in some surprising performances without RB James Conner. The triple option at home is tempting.

Michigan State (+7.5) at Michigan, 3:30 p.m. ET: This line feels the most inflated by public perception. If Jim Harbaugh wasn't coaching Michigan and the Wolverines had the same record, is it at 5? 4? The love of Michigan likely necessitated a line this big. Michigan State and coach Mark Dantonio have always been motivated by perceived oversights. This feels like one of those times.

Vanderbilt at South Carolina (-2.5), 4 p.m. ET: Does this line mean it would be a pick'em game if it was at a neutral field? We're going with the interim coach boost for the Gamecocks, which baldy need an SEC win or two. The season may already be a disaster, but losing to Vanderbilt at home would make it official.

Florida at LSU (-7.5), 7 p.m. ET: We're surprised the line hasn't gone up more with the absence of Florida QB Will Grier who is suspended for the rest of the year after testing positive for a banned substance. The Gators defense is what's keeping this close, but can it stop LSU RB Leonard Fournette? No one has so far. Fournette should be too much. LSU wins by two touchdowns.

Arizona State at Utah (-6.5): 10 p.m. ET: The Sun Devils have been marred by turnovers all season while Utah has capitalized on them. We're expecting the trend to continue. Though given what's gone on in the Pac-12 this year, would it be entirely surprising if Arizona State pulls a second big road upset and ruins yet another undefeated season?

LOCKS OF THE WEEK (Not really, bet against these)

Nick Bromberg (1-5) USC at Notre Dame (-7), 7 p.m. ET: One of the benefits to writing this column is that I can pick last at times. So here's my reasoning for why I'm going with Notre Dame: Graham picked USC. She hasn't won a game yet, so I'm planning on that streak continuing and moving my record to a still-terrible 2-5.

Sam Cooper (2-4) Boise State (-9.5) at Utah State, 9:30 p.m. ET FRIDAY: I am officially riding the Brett Rypien bandwagon. The Boise State offense has been better since the true freshman stepped into action for an injured Ryan Finley. And though Utah State has a pretty solid defense (particularly against the run), it was torched by another true freshman, Washington’s Jake Browning, for 368 yards through the air a few weeks ago. Boise takes another step on its quest to represent the Group of 5 in the New Year’s Six bowls and wins big.

Graham Watson (0-5-1) USC (+7) at Notre Dame: USC +7: A lot of people think the Trojans are going to have a hangover from the events of the past week, but I think it’ll be just the opposite. I think USC rallies around interim coach Clay Helton and beats the Fighting Irish. Let’s be honest, Notre Dame hasn’t been as stellar defensively as many thought it would be and the Trojans do have one of the best offenses in the country even if it was absent last week against Washington. I’m not ready to count the Trojans out just yet.

Ex-Texas WR Kendall Sanders found not guilty of sexual assault

University of Texas football players Kendall Sanders, is booked at the Travis County Criminal Justice Center, Thursday, July 24, 2014 in Austin, Texas. Kendall Sanders and Montrel Meander, two University of Texas football players were arrested and charged Thursday with felony sexual assault after a female student said she was raped in a campus dorm room last month. (AP Photo/Austin American-Statesman, Ralph Barrera)Former Texas wide receiver Kendall Sanders was found not guilty of sexual assault on Friday morning.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Sanders is now “cleared of all wrongdoing” in a June 2014 incident in which Sanders was accused of forcing himself on a UT student in an on-campus dorm. Sanders faced up to 20 years in prison, but a jury of eight men and four women found him not guilty after a four-day trial.

Another former Texas receiver, Montrel Meander, is also charged in the case.

The accuser admitted to initially having consensual sex with Meander in his dorm room after a night out in Austin. A few minutes into intercourse, there was a knock on the door from Sanders, she said. The accuser said Meander let Sanders in the room and Sanders forced himself on her before the two took turns sexually assaulting her.

However, because the accuser admitted to having “casual sex” with Meander, the prosecution is unsure how it will proceed with the charge against Meander.

From the American-Statesman:

Another former UT receiver, Montrel Meander, is set to go to trial on the same charge as Sanders. It remains to be seen how district attorney Andrea Austin will proceed, as the Sanders case appeared to be the stronger of the two in the state’s eyes. The woman admitted to having casual sex with Meander and did not initially identify him as her attacker.

Both players were dismissed by Longhorns coach Charlie Strong after the charges emerged.

Sanders, who would have been a senior for Texas this season, caught 37 passes for 361 yards and a touchdown in 2013. Meander redshirted his only season with the program in 2013.

Former UCLA TE Chris Clark says he's headed to Syracuse

Former UCLA tight end Chris Clark says he’s headed to Syracuse.

Clark, the top-rated tight end in the 2015 recruiting class, announced the move on his Twitter account on Friday.

Clark, who said he plans to enroll at Syracuse in January, told CuseNation.com that the school’s proximity to home helped him choose the Orange over Pittsburgh, his other finalist. Clark played high school ball at Avon Old Farms, a boarding school in Avon, Conn., but is a native of Ridgefield, N.J.

"Just because of how comfortable I feel there," Clark said. "All the guys on the team I felt really comfortable with. It's really close to home and I like the closeness of the school. It's just a good fit.”

Clark played in UCLA’s season opener against Virginia but left the school a few weeks later. Clark reportedly missed part of preseason practice while dealing with a bout of mononucleosis.

At Syracuse, Clark will likely have to sit out the 2016 season due to NCAA transfer rules, though he said the school could pursue a waiver in hopes of getting him on the field next year.

Clark, a four-star recruit, was rated as the No. 79 overall prospect in the country by Rivals.com. He previously verbally committed to both North Carolina and Michigan before signing with UCLA.

Boise State fumbles away chance to represent Group of 5 in Utah State loss

Utah State safety Marwin Evans (24) returns an interception for a touchdown late in the first half against Boise State during an NCAA college football game Friday, Oct. 16, 2015, in Logan, Utah. (Scott Sommerdoft/The Salt Lake Tribune via AP)Despite trailing Utah State 24-10 with 2:20 left in the first half, Boise State looked like it had all the momentum. The Broncos had just regained possession at their own 45-yard line and appeared ready to cut into USU’s lead going into halftime.

But then things went horrifyingly wrong.

Boise State turned the ball over on its next three possessions, allowing the Aggies to score three times in the final 1:25 of the second quarter to take a commanding 45-10 halftime lead en route to an eventual 52-26 USU home victory.

That final turnover, a 90-yard interception return for touchdown by Utah State’s Marwin Evans, was the seventh of the half and the final nail in the coffin on a disastrous two quarters for the Broncos.

Two first quarter fumbles and a second quarter interceptions from BSU true freshman quarterback Brett Rypien allowed the Aggies to jump out to a 24-3 lead early in the second quarter. Boise State cut the lead to 24-10 on a Kelsey Young touchdown run and after forcing a three-and-out, had a great chance to cut the lead to one possession, but Boise’s Devan Demas fumbled the ball away near midfield.

Two plays later, Utah State quarterback Kent Myers, filling in for the injured Chuckie Keeton, reeled off a 39-yard touchdown run to increase the deficit to 31-10.

The Broncos fumbled it away again on the first play of their next drive, leading to a Myers 21-yard touchdown pass to Hunter Sharp.

And when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, Boise State again tried to put points on the board ahead of the halftime break, but then came Evans’ pick-six.

That sizable second half lead allowed the Aggies to effortlessly milk the clock and win the game to improve to 4-2 on the season and 3-0 in Mountain West play while snapping a 12-game losing streak against Boise State in the process.

For Boise State, which was ranked No. 21 coming into the game, the loss is a significant hit to the team’s chances to represent the Group of Five in a New Year’s Six bowl game for the second straight season.

Coming in to Friday night’s game, the Broncos offense had turned the ball over only six times in six games. That number ballooned to 14 with a whopping eight turnovers against the Aggies, giving the defense (which allowed only 334 yards) virtually no chance to keep the team in the ballgame.

Coming into the game, Boise already had wins over Power Five opponents in Washington and Virginia while completely dominating teams like Idaho State, Hawaii and Colorado State with Rypien (who became starter for the injured Ryan Finley) at quarterback. Utah State was by far the toughest test left on Boise State's schedule, with its final five Mountain West opponents having a combined record of 11-18. A win over Utah State would have (barring any unforeseen upsets) allowed BSU to coast to another Mountain West title. Now with the loss, the Broncos are 5-2 (2-1 MWC) and behind USU in the Mountain Division standings.

On top of that, the three unbeaten American Athletic Conference teams – Temple, Houston and Memphis – along with Toledo (6-0) of the MAC and even 6-1 Western Kentucky of C-USA have better resumes to represent the Group of Five conferences.

The top-ranked Group of Five team in the final College Football Playoff rankings will earn a spot in a College Football Playoff-affiliated bowl game. With Friday night’s loss, Boise State looks like a long shot.

Texas Tech scores 2-point conversion with left tackle (GIF)

Poor Kansas.

The season is not going well for the Jayhawks. The winless Big 12 team was destroyed by Baylor at home in Week 6. On Saturday, Texas Tech scored a two-point conversion by snapping the ball sideways to its left tackle.

Really. Watch this GIF to prove we're not kidding. Le'Raven Clark, a senior captain, got to dive into the end zone for 2.

That's the old swinging gate play. Many teams initially line up in the formation on the point-after attempt but few rarely attempt the play. And even fewer execute it. But we like Clark's hustle. He clearly knew he had to get tto the goal line and not much further. Kansas was helpless to stop it, and maybe that's why Texas Tech ran it.

While it may seem cruel to run the play against a team you're clearly better than, it's also a chance to try things that may not normally work against better competition. The play is one of the most fun we'll see all year. It's just also impossible to not have any sympathy for Kansas, either.

The touchdown and converson put the Red Raiders up 11-0 on the Jayhawks. Kansas was a 31.5-point underdog entering the game.

Michigan State defensive end Shilique Calhoun will honor an injured teammate in Saturday's huge game against Michigan.

Calhoun, a senior, will don the No. 43 jersey of linebacker Ed Davis, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in preseason practice.

Davis was a first-team All-Big Ten selection in the preseason for the Spartans, but went down during the team’s first practice in full pads back in August. Davis, a middle linebacker, would have been a fifth-year senior this season. He registered 58 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and seven sacks in 2014.

Calhoun has 24 tackles, six tackles for loss and five sacks though six games for the unbeaten Spartans.

Iowa blows out Northwestern, enters College Football Playoff picture

EVANSTON, IL - OCTOBER 17: Akrum Wadley #25 of the Iowa Hawkeyes rushes against the Northwestern Wildcats during the second quarter at Ryan Field on October 17, 2015 in Evanston, Illinois. (Photo by Jon Durr/Getty Images)Iowa is officially in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten West.

The No. 17 Hawkeyes strolled into Evanston on Saturday and dominated No. 20 Northwestern 40-10 behind a huge effort from an unlikely source: sophomore running back Akrum Wadley.

Wadley, who entered the game with just eight carries for 35 yards on the season, filled in admirably for an injured Jordan Canzeri, rushing for 204 yards and four touchdowns on 26 carries. Canzeri, a senior, suffered a serious-looking ankle injury early in the first half, but the Hawkeyes offense (which was without its two starting tackles) didn’t skip a beat with Wadley in the game.

And while Wadley picked up yards in big chunks, the Hawkeyes defense held Northwestern to 198 total yards and zero points in the second half.

Iowa looked like it would run away with things early after building a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter, but the Wildcats showed some signs of life late in the second quarter after barely moving the ball at all to that point. First, Clayton Thorson hit Christian Jones for a four-yard score to cap off a 12-play, 76-yard drive, cutting Iowa’s lead to 16-7. Iowa’s C.J. Beathard was intercepted on the first play of the Hawkeyes’ ensuing drive, and the Wildcats tacked on a field goal to cut Iowa’s lead to 16-10 at halftime.

The Wildcats got the ball first to open the third quarter, but were quickly forced to punt. When Iowa regained possession, it switched gears back to a power ground game and put up a statement drive, going 12 plays and 80 yards in 6:24 and scoring on Wadley’s third touchdown on the afternoon.

Northwestern fumbled on its next drive and Wadley was quickly in the end zone again to increase the lead to 30-10. Iowa completely controlled things from then on out and cruised to an easy victory, finishing with 294 yards rushing as a team.

The win improves Iowa to 7-0 and 3-0 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes have emerged as clear favorites in a very average West division and all of a sudden enter the College Football Playoff picture.

The Hawkeyes have a bye in the upcoming week, but should be favored in all five of its games down the stretch against Maryland (home), Indiana (road), Minnesota (home), Purdue (home) and Nebraska (road). As improbable as this would have sounded a few months ago, the possibility of Iowa being undefeated heading into a Big Ten title game is very real.

If the Hawkeyes continue to win, that weak schedule will certainly come into focus around the country and for the College Football Playoff committee.
