Michael Brewer named Virginia Tech's starting QB against Duke

Michael Brewer will return as Virginia Tech’s starting quarterback this week against Duke, coach Frank Beamer and offensive coordinator Scot Loeffler said during their press conferences Monday.

Brewer has not started since breaking his collarbone in the season opener against Ohio State. He did play in the third quarter against Miami last weekend, his first medically cleared game action.

Brenden Motley started in Brewer’s absence and went 3-3. He threw for 1,155 yards, 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also ran for 220 yards and three scores.

Against the Hurricanes, Brewer completed three of his four passes for 65 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Ole Miss C Robert Conyers tears ACL, out for the season

Ole Miss center Robert Conyers suffered a torn ACL against Memphis and will miss the remainder of the season, coach Hugh Freeze said during his Monday press conference.

Freeze said Conyers injury occurred in his “good knee” alluding to the fact that Conyers had been struggling with an injury in his right knee the past few months that had limited him to just two practice days a week.

Conyers did not start the 37-24 loss to Memphis, but replaced starting right tackle Sean Rawlings in the first quarter. The injury was sustained in the first half and Conyers left the field on crutches.

Justin Bell will start at center for Saturday’s game against Texas A&M. Left tackle Laremy Tunsil also makes his first appearance of the year after missing the first seven games for accepting impermissible benefits.

Rough travel day for Idaho leads to first road win in nearly four years

$

A late arrival to Troy on Saturday morning might have been the key to Idaho’s first road win since 2011.

The Vandals’ chartered plane out of Spokane on Friday was delayed 14 hours because of mechanical issues. By the time the team took off, it was 3:30 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday and the game was scheduled to kickoff at 1:30 p.m. Central Time.

The flight took about four hours and players arrived in enough time to get breakfast and attend position meetings before loading the bus for an hour-long ride to Troy.

By the end of the day, the Vandals had defeated the Trojans 19-16 thanks to four made field goals, including the game winner with about 3 minutes remaining, from Austin Rehkow.

It was Idaho’s first road win since defeating San Jose State on Nov. 5, 2011, and gave the Vandals their first two-win season since that same year.

Even more astonishing was that Idaho held Troy scoreless and kept the Trojans out of the end zone until the fourth quarter with a depleted defense. At least five starting defensive players were out because of injury, which prompted Petrino to play star receiver Dezmon Epps as a defensive back in the Vandals’ nickel package on the final series. Epps finished with 10 catches for 131 yards and two tackles.

“I’m so proud of our players,” coach Paul Petrino said. “I’ve won Sugar Bowls, Cotton Bowls, huge games my whole life. I don’t know if any one was better than that. With everything our players went through the last 24 hours, for them to go out there and lay it on the line like that … give it everything they’ve got. It’s just a special day.”

President Obama has advice for coach Jim Harbaugh, Michigan

President Barack Obama wants Michigan football players to “keep their chin up.”

That was the message the commander-in-chief relayed to coach Jim Harbaugh on Monday as Harbaugh and his wife Sarah were at the White House as guests of First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Obamas were watching the Michigan-Michigan State game Saturday when Michigan punter Blake O'Neill fumbled a punt with 10 seconds remaining into the waiting arms of Michigan State’s Jalen Watts-Jackson, who ran 38 yards for a winning touchdown.

"[President Obama] was great. We talked about some mutual friends that we both know, and he said the same thing you just said: 'Tough way to lose a football game,'" Harbaugh said via the Detroit Free Press. "(He) told the fellas to keep their chin up. ... (He) likes the way our team plays and he told the guys to keep it going."

Harbagh was in Washington D.C. to help promote the Better Make Room initiative, a public-awareness campaign linked to Michelle Obama's Reach Higher Initiative. The Reach Higher Initiative is aimed at helping students ages 14 to 19 to develop the resources they need to extend their educations and gain career opportunities.http://l.yimg.com/os/publish-images/sports/2015-10-19/138da3d0-76a1-11e5-8030-3de165cc9757_obama-overlay-embed.jpg

Harbaugh and Michelle Obama met during an education event on May 1 at Wayne State University, which prompted Monday’s invite.

Harbaugh, like President Obama, tried to turn a dismal situation into a positive going forward.

"Yeah, it was a brutal way to lose a football game," Harbaugh said, "because the adversity you expect in a game, whatever team adjusts and handles it better is going to win the football game. That particular adversity came when there was nothing left to do; the game was over.

"We won’t let the sadness get in the way of the way we’re improving as an improving football team. (We will) look at the things we’re doing that are putting us in a position to be successful and win a football game like that and also look at the things that put us in a position to not win the game. And it’s never one play, it’s never one play in a football game."

Maryland will wear throwback uniforms when it takes on Penn State on Saturday.

The program unveiled the uniforms on Monday and said they are inspired by the 1961 Terps team, which registered the program’s first-ever win over the Nittany Lions. Take a look:

After Maryland knocked off PSU on Nov. 4, 1961, Penn State won or tied (28 wins, one tie) the next 29 games in the series until the Terps knocked off the Nittany Lions at Beaver Stadium last year.

Saturday’s game, which will be played at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, will be the first for the Terps under interim head coach Mike Locksley, who is filling in for the fired Randy Edsall.

Maryland is 2-4 on the season and has lost three straight games. Penn State dropped to 5-2 with a loss at Ohio State over the weekend.

Report: Ex-Alabama RB Altee Tenpenny, now at Nicholls State, arrested

(AP Photo/Butch Dill)The troubles of former Alabama running back Altee Tenpenny continue.

Tenpenny, who is now at Nicholls State after leaving Alabama and getting dismissed from UNLV, was reportedly arrested Sunday morning for “possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon.”

According the Thibodaux Daily Comet, Nicholls State announced in a statement that Tenpenny has been suspended indefinitely.

“Nicholls Athletics is aware of the incident involving Altee Tenpenny that led to his arrest early Sunday morning. Tenpenny has been suspended indefinitely from all football activities, effective immediately,” the school said in a statement. “All of our student-athletes are held to a high standard and will be held accountable for their actions. We will continue to gather information from the proper authorities regarding the incident as it becomes available.”

Tenpenny joined the Nicholls team during preseason practice after his brief stint at UNLV came to an end. Tenpenny announced his decision to transfer to UNLV in May, but was dismissed by coach Tony Sanchez in August for breaking team rules.

“It’s unfortunate, but we’ve got plenty of guys,” Sanchez said per the Las Vegas Review Journal. “At the end of the day, rules are the rules.”

Tenpenny spent two seasons and rushed for 218 yards and a touchdown on 48 attempts at Alabama before leaving the program in January. He was the No. 53 overall recruit in the 2013 class.

Tenpenny has not appeared in any games for Nicholls State this season.

Bill Snyder writes letter to Kansas State students apologizing for Oklahoma loss

(AP Photo/Orlin Wagner)Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder is known for writing letters to players on opposing teams after great performances, but on Monday, Snyder penned a different kind of letter.

According to the Wichita Eagle, Snyder sent a letter to Kansas State students apologizing for his team’s embarrassing 55-0 loss to Oklahoma over the weekend.

The letter was distributed via email by KSU athletics. Here’s what it said:

Kansas State University Students,

First, let me thank you for caring so very much about our football family of which you are a tremendous part. And, please accept my apology for the manner in which we represented you on Saturday. I know you are pained by the outcome, as I am. I hope that you will appreciate our players for never giving up even in the face of such adversity and the loss of so many of their teammates. I am proud of them and must do a better job of preparing them than I did Saturday. Please know you are greatly appreciated and considered a major part of this football family.

Thank you again for caring,

Bill Snyder

The loss was the third straight to a ranked Big 12 opponent for the Wildcats, dropping the team’s record to 3-3 on the season. The first two losses – to Oklahoma State and TCU – were by a combined total of only nine points, but Saturday’s loss to the Sooners was the worst shutout home loss in program history.

The Wildcats have a chance to get back on track this weekend with a road matchup at Texas (2-4).

LSU TE Dillon Gordon is 'likely' lost for the season after Achilles injury

$

LSU tight end Dillon Gordon likely will miss the rest of the season after re-injuring his left Achilles, coach Les Miles announced during his Monday press conference.

Gordon suffered the injury during the Tigers’ second series of the 35-28 win against Florida on Saturday.

The injury already cost Gordon games against Syracuse, Eastern Michigan and South Carolina and nearly all of the contest against Auburn.

Colin Jeter started in place of Gordon during those contests and will be counted on now to replace one of the team’s best run blockers for the rest of the season.

Miles said he was uncertain whether Gordon would be eligible for a medical redshirt but that the team would investigate it.

Utah TE Siale Fakailoatonga out for season

Utah has lost a second tight end for the season.

Coach Kyle Whittingham said Siale Fakailoatonga would miss the rest of the 2015 campaign with an injury he suffered against Arizona State. Fakailoatonga became Utah's starting tight end after the first game of the season when Evan Moeai was injured in the season opener.

Whittingham did not elaborate on Fakailoatonga's injury.

Fakailoatonga, a junior, is Utah's fourth-leading receiver behind RB Devontae Booker, WR Britain Covey and WR Kenneth Scott. Fakailoatonga has 12 catches for 120 yards through six games.

According to the Associated Press, he's expected to be replaced in Utah's lineup by Harrison Handley. The sophomore has two touchdown catches this season in his nine catches for 69 yards. Handley's two touchdown catches tie him for the team lead.

Utah's pass offense isn't one of the most explosive in the country; but it's certainly efficient. Quarterbacks Travis Wilson and Kendal Thompson (plus Booker, who has completed one pass for 25 yards) have thrown for 1,225 yards with nearly a 70 percent completion rate.

Fakailoatonga was a three-star recruit out of Salt Lake City in the class of 2013 according to Rivals.

Jalen Watts-Jackson: 'I would do it all over again for my brothers'

Michigan State's Jalen Watts-Jackson had surgery for his dislocated hip on Sunday and was released from the hospital Monday.

Watts-Jackson, a redshirt freshman, scored the game-winning touchdown against Michigan Saturday after Michigan's punter bobbled a punt snap with 10 seconds left. Watts-Jackson suffered the injury as he was tackled in the end zone.

He posted to Instagram Monday afternoon that he would do the play all over again if he had the chance.

"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. " very bitter sweet end to my season. This morning I had surgery on my hip putting me out for the season. But if I got the chance I would do it all over again for my brothers. God has a plan for everyone and I will not question any obstacles I encounter on my journey . #spartanswill

Watts-Jackson's season is over after the injury and he's expected to be unable to put weight on his left hip for a lengthy period of time as part of the rehabilitation process.

[Check out Dr. Saturday on Tumblr for things you won’t see on the blog]

His father told the Detroit Free-Press that the injury shouldn't be career-ending. There were fears that Watts-Jackson's injury was similar to the one that ended Bo Jackson's NFL career in 1991.

"But as it turned out, it wasn't the same thing -- they told us Jalen got lucky," Rick Jackson said to the Free Press. "Everything's looking good after the surgery, and this isn't gonna be a career-ending injury."

Clemson stages pep rally at terminally ill 9-month-old's home (Video)

The family of a terminally ill baby couldn't make it to a Clemson pep rally. So the school brought the pep rally to them.

Jonathan and Stephanie Bolt's 9-month-old daughter Addison has Krabbe disease. Jonathan wanted to take his daughter to a Clemson football game, but she's unable to sit up, eat, or breathe on her own and can't go. After finding that out, Clemson made sure they got to enjoy a personalized experience.

According to WYFF, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney even signed a football for the family. Well done, Clemson.

Krabbe disease affects 1-in-100,000 people in the United States and there is no known cure.

From the Mayo Clinic:

Krabbe disease is an inherited disorder that destroys the protective coating (myelin) of nerve cells in the brain and throughout the nervous system.

In most cases, signs and symptoms of Krabbe disease develop in babies before 6 months of age, and the disease usually results in death by age 2. When it develops in older children and adults, the course of the disease can vary greatly.

The Bolts, who live in Piedmont, also said the state of South Carolina does not test babies immediately after birth for the disease and believe earlier detection might have been able to prolong her life.

Pete Carroll on return to USC: 'That's not happening'

$

Those hoping Pete Carroll would leave his cushy NFL life to save USC are in for some disappointment.

Carroll, the former national championship coach of the Trojans and current Super Bowl-winning coach of the Seattle Seahawks, said Tuesday he has no intention of returning to college coaching at this point in time.

The topic became a talking point on Dan Patrick’s radio show Monday, which prompted the question to Carroll. Patrick said boosters were trying to get Carroll back in the USC fold.

“Pete Carroll is on that short list right now,” Patrick said. “Not that Pete would leave Seattle. But the alumni are all in on trying to get Pete back.

“The people who help make decisions there, they think Pete Carroll is in play. This what I was told, before the loss [on Sunday], if it goes south in Seattle, they think there is a chance that Pete would listen to go back to USC.”

Well, it is the middle of the NFL season, but this seems like a lot of wishful thinking. Carroll has won a Super Bowl in Seattle and played in another, Yeah, this season hasn’t been great, but it’s difficult to see him jumping ship — or being fired — after one down year, especially with a lot of talent on his roster.

If USC were to pull this off, and that’s a big if, it would be the upset of the year.

Ohio State names J.T. Barrett starting quarterback

$
0
0

J.T. Barrett has final earned his starting spot back.

After weeks of playing backup quarterback to Cardale Jones, coach Urban Meyer announced Tuesday that Barrett would start Saturday’s game against Rutgers. This isn’t much of a surprise.

Barrett came in during the first half of Saturday’s win against Penn State and led the Buckeyes to their first touchdown. He took over in the third quarter and played the rest of the game, making what was a dual-quarterback system a one-man job.

In the past when Barrett had come in as a spark for Jones, he’d performed OK, but nothing that would have warranted a quarterback switch.

Last Saturday was different.

Barrett used his legs to take advantage of a Penn State defense that was trying to limit throwing lanes. It was like watching the Ohio State team that Barrett made successful a year ago. And quite frankly, it really looked like the first time this year Barrett, who suffered an ankle injury late last season that caused him to miss the postseason, was totally healthy and totally comfortable.

It’s odd to see a coach make a quarterbacking change when his team’s 7-0 and ranked No. 1 in the nation, but it was clear the offense moved better with Barrett. It’s one thing to suffer through a sludgy offense when a team is playing weaker opponents. But as Ohio State prepares to play what is essentially the meat of its schedule, it needed to go with the player that made the team move in the most cohesive way.

That guy was, no doubt, J.T. Barrett.

Ohio State students hit JT Barrett with jump pass on campus (Video)

Ohio State scored on a successful jump pass from J.T. Barrett to Braxton Miller during Saturday night’s win over Penn State. On Monday, Barrett got a taste of his own medicine… sort of.

Two Ohio State students spotted Barrett on campus and decided to put him in the shoes of a Penn State defender. Better yet, they caught the funny moment on camera.

Barrett must have thought it was pretty funny and tweeted about it on Monday morning.

Miller liked it, too.

The execution wasn’t quite on par with Barrett, who perfectly pulled it off a la Tim Tebow at Florida.

Now that Barrett is officially the Buckeyes’ starting quarterback, maybe we’ll see a few more jump passes before the season comes to an end.

10 best college football games of the season so far

$
0
0

The first half of the 2015 college football season has provided enough drama and thrills to last several campaigns.

With the season at its midway point, college football appears headed for a turbulent and unpredictable finish, perhaps rivaling the incredible 2007 campaign. Many of the fall's best games to date have helped set the table for chaos in pursuit of the College Football Playoff.

Not every contest appearing below will impact the championship hunt, or even the bowl picture. However, all have contributed to a thrilling, dramatic and altogether memorable college football season.

10. Old Dominion 38, Eastern Michigan 34 – Sept. 5

(Hyunsoo Leo Kim/The Virginian-Pilot via AP)Fledgling program Old Dominion and perennial Mid-American Conference cellar-dweller Eastern Michigan are not typically on the national radar.

You probably missed their Week 1 contest, which featured just about everything one could want from a classic game: a big comeback, a game-winning drive in the final minutes and a breakout, star performance.

Old Dominion running back Ray Lawry went 45 yards with less than two minutes remaining, scoring his fourth touchdown to put the Monarchs on top for good. Old Dominion trailed the host Eagles 24-10 at halftime, but rallied with a three-touchdown third quarter to force a tie.

The Monarchs couldn't quite get over the hump and take the lead until Lawry's final end zone scamper for Old Dominion's only advantage of the game.

9. Rutgers 55, Indiana 52 – Oct. 17

Overshadowed by another Big Ten game last week, Rutgers' 28-point rally to beat Indiana deserves recognition. The Scarlet Knights dug a 52-27 hole, the result of Indiana's 28-point third quarter.

The Hoosiers offense, which scored virtually at will for three quarters, was rendered anemic in the fourth.

Living up to the mantra “Keep Chopping,” popularized at Rutgers by former head coach Greg Schiano in its surprise 2006 season, the Scarlet Knights cut at Indiana's lead. Turnovers played a huge part, with Rutgers forcing three straight, including a scoop-and-score by Kemoko Turay.

The 19-point deficit Rutgers erased is the largest fourth-quarter comeback of the season.

8. Florida 28, Tennessee 27 – Sept. 26

The term “snake-bit” refers to something with a seemingly unceasing string of misfortune. For Tennessee football, the more appropriate phrasing for its 11-game losing streak to Florida is Gator-bit.

The Vols were seemingly exorcizing more than a decade of frustration when it built a two-score lead over rival Florida. Tennessee's offense sputtered at times, sure, but Florida could not mount enough offense to erase the deficit.

At least, not until the final two possessions, when it went 86 and 59 yards for unanswered scores.

The Gators were a perfect 5-of-5 on fourth-down conversions, including three on the last two possessions. Antonio Calloway's game-winning touchdown reception came on a fourth-and-14 conversion with just 1:26 left in regulation.

Florida's rally and extension of the streak garnered much of the attention, but had Tennessee not won, quarterback Joshua Dobbs' remarkable afternoon would have been the headline. He led the Volunteers in yards passing, rushing and receiving, a feat not accomplished in college football in a decade prior.

7. Oklahoma 31, Tennessee 24 (2OT) – Sept. 12

All apologies to Tennessee fans; I don't mean to twist the knife. However, Florida's win was simply a retread of another Vol result just two weeks earlier, then a 14-point lead coughed up to Oklahoma.

Much like the Florida game, Tennessee's defense was virtually impenetrable for three quarters. However, Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield erupted for all four of Oklahoma's touchdowns through the final quarter and overtimes.

Mayfield's performance down the stretch and in extra frames might be the most impressive, condensed showing any individual player has had this season. The win scored Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops further bragging rights over the SEC, and helped spoil Tennessee's plans of returning to the big stage nationally.

6. Tennessee 38, Georgia 31 – Oct. 10

The first half of the season wasn't all bad, Vols faithful. After coughing up two different 14-point leads in the season's first month, Tennessee finally landed on the other side of the equation in its comeback defeat of Georgia.

The Bulldogs went ahead 24-3 in the late second quarter, cranking up the heat on Tennessee head coach Butch Jones significantly.

(Photo by Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)It only took the Vols 37 seconds of game clock to lower the temperature on their head coach's seat, however. Tennessee scored twice in that span just before halftime, turning a three-score deficit into just one by intermission.

By the end of the third period, Georgia's lead became a deficit.

Though the loss of running back Nick Chubb to a knee injury may have contributed to Georgia's blown lead, backup Sony Michel rumbled for 145 yards rushing and another 26 receiving. The Bulldogs' problems went beyond the loss of just one player.

5. Clemson 24, Notre Dame 22 – Oct. 3

A tropical storm provided the backdrop for this slog through the mud. That's meant in the most complimentary way possible.

Notre Dame and Clemson engaged in an old-school, physical slugfest. Passing in the inclement weather was almost impossible, so Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson took it upon himself to power the Tigers' offense with 93 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

And, despite the conditions, Watson also managed two passing scores.

Behind their quarterback, the Tigers built a 21-3 lead. Insurmountable given the conditions, right?

Of course not; this is college football. Notre Dame chipped away despite fumbling woes, scoring a touchdown with just seven seconds left and a chance to tie. Brian Kelly's call to run freshman DeShone Kizer on a designed quarterback draw is the subject of controversy. Had it been successful, one of the season's best games and a possible Playoff determiner would have gone to overtime.

4. BYU 33, Nebraska 28 – Sept. 5

(AP Photo/Rick Bowmer, File)BYU's Week 1 win over Nebraska is college football's answer to an M. Night Shyamalan film. A twist ending compensated for an otherwise unremarkable story prior to the conclusion.

Nebraska had taken a 28-24 lead on Trey Foster's touchdown reception from Tommy Armstrong Jr., but a field goal in the fourth quarter and some solid defense gave BYU the ball with a chance to win.

Starting quarterback Taysom Hill sustained a season-ending injury midway through this one, leaving true freshman Tanner Mangum under the spotlight. And boy, did he ever deliver.

Mangum's 42-yard Hail Mary to Mitch Mathews as time expired scored BYU the win, and ended Nebraska's 30-year streak of home-opening victories.

3. Ole Miss 43, Alabama 37 – Sept. 19

A series of funky bounces and unusual plays helped Ole Miss build a three-touchdown lead over Alabama. Forget the Blood Moon, that may be the most unusual occurrence of the fall.

Despite the gap, Alabama fought back with a pair of touchdowns in just over two minutes.

Ole Miss held on by the fingertips — specifically, Tony Bridges'. His interception of Jake Coker didn't seal the win, as Alabama got another possession with 25 seconds remaining, but Bridges' pick helped Ole Miss score its first back-to-back triumphs over the Crimson Tide in program history.

2. TCU 55, Texas Tech 52 – Sept. 26

Give a hand to TCU running back Aaron Green, whose hands kept the Horned Frogs alive in the College Football Playoff race.

On fourth-and-goal from the Texas Tech 4-yard line, Green dove in the back of the end zone to catch a deflected ball just before it hit the turf. It was Green's third touchdown of the game, as he scored two more on the ground to balance Trevone Boykin's four passing scores.

Should TCU win the Big 12 championship and earn a spot in the Playoff, Green's reception will be looked back upon as one of the season's defining moments.

1. Michigan State 27, Michigan 23 – Oct. 17

(Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)When the hours and days immediately following a game are dedicated to discussing its place in college football lore, you know it's a classic.

Michigan-Michigan State closed with a play that rivals such iconic moments as Chris Davis' “Kick Six” to beat Alabama in 2013, or Kordell Stewart's Hail Mary heave in the Big House 21 years ago.

Michigan State had no timeouts remaining when Michigan lined up for a punt that would have pinned the Spartans deep in their own territory. Were it not for a cruel twist of football fate, punter Blake O'Neill would have been a hero for the Wolverines.

Before the final play, O'Neill had delivered several big kicks that pushed Michigan State back behind its own 20-yard line. His 80-yarder was a game-defining play.

However, his fumble of the last snap overshadowed everything else, even the tremendous blocking Jalen Watts-Jackson received from his Michigan State teammates on the ensuing run-back for the win.

While the ending generated the buzz, this was simply a classic rivalry contest between two hard-hitting football teams. Michigan and Michigan State both play a defensive style that could win a national championship. The Spartans have the better chance to do so now, but the Wolverines looked every bit their equal for 60 minutes in Ann Arbor.

Former Alabama RB Altee Tenpenny dies in car accident

Former Alabama running back Altee Tenpenny as killed in a car accident in Mississippi Tuesday evening.

His high school coach confirmed the reports to Al.com Wednesday morning. Tenpenny went to North Little Rock High School in Arkansas. News of Tenpenny's death first spread on social media Tuesday evening. Here's what Al.com found out from the Mississippi Highway Patrol:

Tenpenny was driving through Mississippi when he collided with a highway sign at approximately 5 p.m. just outside Glen Allan. The collision sent the vehicle airborne and it started rolling once it landed back on the ground, according to Corporal Tony Dunn of the Mississippi Highway Patrol Department of Public Affairs. The vehicle collided with a utility pole and Tenpenny was ejected from the vehicle.

Tenpenny was recently suspended by Nicholls State after he was arrested for possession and discharge of a firearm on Sunday. He was at the FCS school after he was dismissed from UNLV. He went to the Rebels briefly after he left Alabama.

Tenpenny had been suspended indefinitely by Nicholls State.

Alabama players reacted to the news of his death on Twitter as they found out.

Tenpenny had 218 career yards in two seasons at Alabama. He didn't play for UNLV before he switched to Nicholls State. He was the No. 8 running back and a four-star recruit in the class of 2013 according to Rivals.

Michigan punter says with clean catch he could have executed punt

Michigan punter Blake O'Neill said Tuesday he was confident he could have gotten his late fourth-quarter punt off had he handled the snap cleanly against Michigan State.

O'Neill's dropped punt snap helped Michigan State take a 27-23 win over Michigan on the final play of the game. The Spartans blitzed O'Neill, who fumbled the low snap. The ball then flew into the air as defenders converged upon him and Jalen Watts-Jackson ended up in the end zone for the game-winning touchdown (and suffered a dislocated hip on the play).

"It wasn't too bad," O'Neill said. "The protection was good, the snap was in my catch zone, and, if anything, just put me back out there for the next one and I'm sure I'll make the kick."

O'Neill's confidence that he could have gotten the ball kicked with a good catch may be a bit brazen. Michigan State had no one back to receive the punt and no one lined up on one of the gunners outside Michigan's formation. It meant that the Spartans were rushing 10 defenders at Michigan's eight blockers on the inside of the formation. It was a bit of a mismatch.

Michigan had two gunners on the outside on the play, meaning one was uncovered. O'Neill was asked if he could have thrown the ball to the uncovered player for an easy first down to run out the clock. He said it was not an option.

"No, I could have gone AWOL but I learned against BYU that’s not a good option," O'Neill said, referencing a fake punt play from Sept. 26. He took off on a punt that was not apparently a designed fake. While he got nine yards on the third quarter play, he didn't get the first down and heard an earful from coach Jim Harbaugh on the sidelines.

Sunday, interim Michigan athletic director Jim Hackett issued an open letter to fans who were taking out their frustrations on O'Neill via social media.

Girl in Trevone Boykin photo: 'I'm famous'

By now, you've probably seen the photo of TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin with a young Iowa State fan before Saturday's game between the Horned Frogs and Cyclones.

But you likely didn't know who the young fan is. Boykin took a moment before the coin toss to ask her what her name is.

She's 7-year-old Abby Faber. Abby has spastic diplegia cerebral palsy before her third birthday and was chosen to be an honorary captain for the game. She undergoes her physical therapy at Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines.

From the Fort Worth Star-Telegram:

“She usually uses a walker,” Jenny Faber said, explaining that she and her husband, Steve, thought it would be easier for Abby to use a wheelchair for the pregame ceremony.

Faber said Abby, a first-grader, “pretty much takes her challenges head-on.”

She has participated in the Ankeny Miracle League — T-ball for children with special needs — and this spring performed a dance recital with Ballet Des Moines: Dance without Limits.

“She really likes to dance,” Faber said.

And she really likes sports, Faber said, adding that Abby’s two brothers and a sister are all active in athletics.

And Abby has been relishing her fame from the picture. Jenny Faber said she heard her parents talking about the attention and said "I'm famous."

She's now a Boykin fan too even though the Horned Frogs beat the Cyclones 45-21. Jenny Faber said the family will be following him the rest of the season. With the way Boykin is playing, they may have an opportunity to see him in New York in December for the Heisman Trophy ceremony.

Former Michigan coach Brady Hoke says he wouldn't have punted

Former Michigan coach Brady Hoke said on his SiriusXM College Sports radio show this week that he would not have punted at the end of the Michigan-Michigan State game.

Hoke said he would have run another offensive play on fourth down and then left the fate of the game in the hands of his capable defense.

Michigan lost after punter Blake O’Neill fumbled the snap and then had his punt blocked by the Michigan State defense with 10 seconds remaining. Michigan State’s Jalen Watts-Jackson scooped up the ball and ran it 38 yards for the game-winning score.

"Personally, if we have the No. 1 defense in the nation I'm going to test those guys," said Hoke, who was fired last year after four seasons as Michigan head coach. "You've got to play to the strength of your football team and the strength of the Michigan football team all year long has been their defense."

Hoke explained that while Harbaugh probably had a good reason to punt, there were just too many potential pitfalls in that situation.

"No. 1, I think the one gunner to the field should have been in a little bit more and if you're going to punt it there's ways to protect it a little better," Hoke said.

Hoke admitted that it was easier to look at the play in hindsight instead of in the moment.

"Look, I know it's easy from where we sit right now," Hoke said. "I've been on the sideline and had to make decisions. I went for two against Ohio State two years ago because Devin Gardner has a broken foot and didn't think the defense was playing as well we needed."

Hoke was 31-20 at Michigan and 18-14 in Big Ten play. The Wolverines went 11-2 in his first season, but didn’t have more than eight wins in any season after that. The wolverines went 5-7 before Hoke was fired.

Report: Texas agrees to lucrative 15-year deal with Nike

The University of Texas has reached an agreement for Nike to be the Longhorns apparel outfitter for the next 15 years.

The deal, according to the Austin American-Statesman, did not have a public monetary value yet, but it’s expected to be the most lucrative apparel deal in college sports. One source told the paper that the deal would be “higher than Michigan.” Michigan signed a 15-year deal with Nike this summer worth an estimated $169 million. At that point it was the biggest apparel deal in college sports.

Texas had been looking for apparel options this year as its current 15-year Nike deal was set to expire. However, the school cancelled a meeting with Under Armor earlier this month, which signified that it was likely going to remain with Nike, which had been the Longhorns outfitter since 2000.

According to the Austin American-Statesman, Nike did have a first right-of-refusal in its current deal, which meant if Under Armor or any other outfitter had offered Texas, Nike would have had an opportunity to match.

The only thing remaining to make this deal complete is the contract must be forwarded to the UT System Board of Regents for final approval.
