The Pac-12 South title will run through Los Angeles

It’s official, the Pac-12 South title win run through Los Angeles.

UCLA, USC and Utah are in a three-way tie atop the Pac-12 South standings, but USC already defeated the Utes and UCLA defeated Utah 17-9 on Saturday.

USC earned its third conference loss thanks to a 48-28 pummeling by a red-hot Oregon team, which has now won five straight.

That means that the winner of next week’s UCLA-USC game will earn the right to represent the Pac-12 South in the conference title game.

Now, who that opponent will be is still up in the air.

Stanford leads the Pac-12 North by a game and will play California on Saturday night. If they lose, however, the Cardinal would be tied with Oregon and the Ducks would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker thanks to last week’s 38-36 win.

Few teams in the country have been as hot as Oregon.

Since quarterback Vernon Adams returned from a fractured finger that he suffered in the season opener, the Ducks have played like many expected them to play from the opening game.

Against USC, Adams completed 20 of 25 passes for 407 yards and six touchdowns. All six of the touchdown passes went to six different receivers. The USC secondary seemed unable to figure out the Ducks’ routs as several players were left open for easy grabs and yards after the catch.

Defensively, the Oregon defense, which had been abused through the air during its winning streak, got after quarterback Cody Kessler and then got a bit of luck when receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster suffered an ankle/foot injury when his foot appeared to get stuck in the turf. Smith-Schuster didn’t miss any time, but it was clear he was dealing with that injury as well as the effects of his surgically repaired hand.

UCLA came into its game against Utah knowing that a loss would eliminate them from Pac-12 South title contention. The Utes had struggled since their loss against USC on Oct. 24 and last week’s double-overtime loss to Arizona handed the keys to the Pac-12 South to USC.

It also didn’t help that Utah came into Saturday’s game against the Bruins without star running back Devontae Booker, who had been the most consistent part of the Utes offense. Booker suffered a knee injury against Arizona and was ruled out for the rest of the regular season. Quarterback Travis Wilson managed to throw just 110 yards and rushed for 67. Joe Williams, who replaced Booker, had 121 yards in the loss.

UCLA star freshman quarterback Josh Rosen didn’t have a great game — he completed just 50 percent of his passes — but he did enough to secure the victory. The Bruins scored a touchdown on their first possession and never relinquished the lead.

Both USC and UCLA were in the preseason conversations for the Pac-12 South title, but both took circuitous routes to get there. If UCLA wins next week’s game, it will play in the conference title game for the first time since 2012. It hasn’t won the Pac-12 title since 1998.

USC has never played in the Pac-12 title game (the format started in 2011) and last won a conference title in 2008.

LSU falls to Ole Miss 38-17 for third straight loss

Will the rumors about LSU coach Les Miles' job status start intensifying?

Miles' Tigers lost 38-17 to Ole Miss on Saturday. It was the Tigers' third-straight loss and came days after the Baton Rouge Advocate wrote that there were indications Miles would be coaching to keep his job as LSU's coach against the Rebels and Texas A&M.

If those indications have any truth, the evidence presented on Saturday wasn't very compelling in Miles' favor.

The Tigers gave up 24 unanswered points to start the game and didn't get on the board until QB Brandon Harris found Tyron Johnson for a touchdown. The Tigers got back to within seven at 24-17 (when Leonard Fournette fumbled into the end zone and the ball was recovered by an offensive lineman), but Ole Miss pulled away after that.

Ole Miss QB Chad Kelly had four total touchdowns – two each on the ground and in the air - and set the Ole Miss record for total touchdowns in a season. The person whose record he broke? None other than Eli Manning. Not bad for a quarterback in his first season with the team after transferring to junior college for a season following an unceremonious parting with Clemson.

Kelly finished with 280 yards passing and 81 yards rushing. Fournette, everyone's presumed Heisman winner when LSU was No. 2 and undefeated before losing to Alabama, ran for 108 yards on 25 carries. He also had four catches for 72 yards. Harris threw for 324 yards, but many of those came with the Tigers forced to play catchup.

The game also featured a second-half scrum between the teams that had to be broken up by the officials and featured multiple personal foul penalties.

But while Kelly went into the Ole Miss record books and the Rebels head into a pivotal Egg Bowl showdown that may be for second place in the SEC West, Miles future will be the dominant takeaway from the game. He said after the game that he didn't feel he was in danger of losing it. A $15 million buyout probably helps with that comfort.

And it's important to note that LSU's schedule at the end of the season is much tougher than the first half. Ole Miss went to the Peach Bowl last season and Arkansas was thought to be one of the season's most improved teams.

Of course, preseason projections mean nothing. And the LSU fanbase has very high expectations. With a win against Texas A&M next week, LSU will finish the regular season 9-3. A very good season for a lot of teams. But on the heels of an 8-5 season in 2014, a possible one-game regular season improvement is seen as a disappointment. Is it enough of a disappointment to make a coaching change seem incredibly realistic? We're about to find out.

Wisconsin has 3 TDs overturned by replay in loss to Northwestern (Video)

Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst watches as a play is reviewed by referees during the final seconds of an NCAA college football game against Northwestern Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015, in Madison, Wis. Northwestern won 13-7. (AP Photo/Morry Gash)Wisconsin lost 13-7 to Northwestern at home on Saturday afternoon and did so in heartbreaking fashion.

The Badgers had three – yes, three – touchdowns overturned by instant replay in the second half, including two in the final minute of regulation.

After taking over down 13-7 with 1:47 to go, the Wisconsin offense worked its way deep into Wildcats territory. And on a first down play from the 23, Joel Stave hit tight end Troy Fumagalli for what was originally ruled a touchdown.

The play was looked at, and replay showed Fumagalli’s knee hit the turf before he scored, so the touchdown was correctly overturned.

The controversy arose on the next snap. Stave rolled right on a play-action pass and found Jazz Peavy in the end zone for what appeared to be a touchdown. However, the score was again overturned after it was determined that Peavy did not maintain possession and complete the process of the catch.

It certainly looked like a catch at first glance, but if you look closely, you can see that the ball was jostled loose when Peavy hit the turf.

It was a tough break, but the Badgers still had three more attempts to score from the one-yard line.

It didn’t work.

Stave was sacked on second down. The Badgers were out of timeouts, so they had to spike the ball on third down to stop the clock. Wisconsin’s final chance fell incomplete on fourth down, and Northwestern held on to a victory.

All of this happened after another controversial third quarter ruling.

It appeared that Wisconsin wideout Alex Erickson returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown, but the touchdown was negated after officials ruled Erickson made an invalid fair catch signal.

It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but technically the call is correct. As pointed out by SB Nation’s Rodger Sherman, any waving by a player that is not “by extending one hand only clearly above his head” is illegal once the player gains possession of the ball.

And after all of these tough breaks, Wisconsin fans were fed up and pelted referees with snowballs as they exited the field.

That's not a great look, you can completely understand the frustration.

If you haven’t heard of Mississippi State’s Fred Ross, you have now.

Ross, a junior, has quietly been one of the best receivers in the SEC this season, and he showcased his skills with a crazy touchdown catch in the second quarter against Arkansas.

Already up 24-14, Bulldogs quarterback Dak Prescott found Ross 20 yards downfield. The ball was thrown a bit behind Ross, but he leapt in the air and snagged it with his right hand.

Here's another angle of Ross' awesome effort.

After gathering himself, Ross made two Arkansas defensive backs miss and scampered 35 yards for a Bulldogs touchdown.

The highlight reel touchdown catch gave Mississippi State a 31-14 lead.

Ross entered Saturday night’s game against as the third-leading receiver in the SEC with 59 catches.

Kentucky DL Cory Johnson hauls in awesome INT (GIF)

Kentucky defensive lineman Cory “Poop” Johnson is a human highlight reel!

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Johnson returned a fumble 77 yards for a touchdown earlier in the season, and on Saturday night, he made another awesome play.

With the Wildcats already up big over Charlotte late in the third quarter, Johnson made a crazy interception as 49ers QB Brooks Barden was attempting to throw the ball away.

Watch this:

While absorbing a block from a Charlotte offensive lineman, Johnson located the ball and tipped it up in the air with one hand. He then did a 180-degree turn and completed the interception as he fell out of bounds.

What an athlete!

And if you’re wondering how he got his “Poop” nickname, just watch this video.

What a guy.

Baylor ruins Oklahoma State's undefeated season with 45-35 win

$

Baylor’s chances for a spot in the College Football Playoff aren’t dead yet.

The Bears redeemed last week’s loss to Oklahoma by going into Stillwater and defeating previously undefeated Oklahoma State 45-35. It was the Bears' first win in Stillwater since 1939.

The win also was payback for the last time Baylor was in Stillwater. The Bears were undefeated with BCS title aspirations and were hammered by the Cowboys. This year, it was the Cowboys who came into the contest with championship aspirations and came up short.

Baylor jumped out to a 14-0 lead, but the Cowboys fought back to tie the contest midway through the first quarter. However, after that tie, the Cowboys offense was stunted.

The Baylor defense got to quarterback Mason Rudolph early and disrupted his offensive rhythm. Meanwhile, the Baylor running game came to life for the first time since quarterback Seth Russell was lost with a neck injury. Baylor’s rushers, which included quarterbacks Jarrett Stidham and Chris Johnson, had 73 carries for 304 yards and three touchdowns. In the two games prior to this, the Bears had 262 rushing yards total.

The running game took pressure off Stidham, who was clearly still banged up from last week’s game against Oklahoma and ended up yielding the second half to backup Johnson.

Johnson, who spent the bulk of the season as a wide receiver after losing the backup battle to Stidham in the preseason, came into the contest and played well. He completed 5 of 10 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for a score late in the game. His only blemish was an interception late in the fourth quarter that ultimately allowed the Cowboys to cut the lead to 10.

However, Oklahoma State never got any closer than that.

The Baylor win means for the second consecutive season the Big 12 will not have an undefeated team, and whichever teams are standing at the end of the regular season will probably be playing the "we-beat-them-so-we-deserve-to-get-in" card.

Oklahoma State finishes its regular season with a game against Oklahoma and Baylor will face a spunky but depleted TCU squad that lost to the Sooners on Saturday.

Oklahoma escapes TCU after Horned Frogs miss 2-point conversion

$

TCU coach Gary Patterson's aggressiveness didn't pay off.

After his team scored a touchdown with 55 seconds left to pull within a point of Oklahoma on Saturday, TCU didn't go for the tie. And as Bram Kohlhausen was flushed from the pocket, his pass to the end zone was batted down by Oklahoma's Steven Parker. Oklahoma survived with a 30-29 win.

Throughout the majority of the second half, Oklahoma was the dominant team. On defense, anyway. Without quarterback Trevone Boykin and wide receiver Josh Doctson, not only the two best players on TCU's team but perhaps two of the best players in the Big 12, TCU's offense was sputtering. Quarterback Foster Sawyer had a tendency to throw 50/50 passes deep into coverage and they were turning into arm punts.

Sawyer was pulled after his third interception with the Sooners leading 30-13 and Bram Kohlhausen replaced him. Suddenly, TCU's offense came to life. Kohlhausen hit Ke'Vontae Turpin for an 86-yard touchdown and found Emanuel Porter for the 14-yard touchdown that put TCU within an point.

The quarterback play was a turnabout from the previous week. After Boykin exited the game with an ankle injury -- the same one that prevented him from playing against OU -- he was replaced by Kohlhausen. He was ineffective and replaced by Sawyer, who sparked the offense and earned the start against Oklahoma.

But the reason Kohlhausen had a chance to bring Oklahoma back despite the impotence of the TCU offense earlier in the half is because Oklahoma's offense had hit the skids too. Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield exited the game at halftime after he was evaluated for a possible concussion. Mayfield was hit in the head in the first half but stayed in the game. With the Sooners up 23-7 at halftime, Mayfield was evaluated by team doctors, and according to OU coach Bob Stoops after the game, deemed unfit to play the rest of the way.

Mayfield was replaced by Trevor Knight, who was 5-of-16 passing for 76 yards and an interception. Oklahoma's lone source of second-half offense came from a hobbled Samaje Perine, who had a 72-yard touchdown run. The run came after Perine was awkwardly tackled near the sideline and his left leg was rolled up on. Perine returned to the game after Joe Mixon, the man who took his spot at running back, limped off the field.

One could argue that Knight's ineffectiveness would be an impetus for Patterson to kick the extra point and play for the tie after Porter's touchdown. However, even without Mayfield on the field for OU, TCU was still climbing uphill against Oklahoma. Perine rushed for 188 yards overall. Could TCU have contained him in overtime? Patterson said after the game the venue played a role in the call.

We plead for coaches to be more aggressive, and Patterson's call is one that will be judged solely on its outcome by many. Given the circumstances TCU was in, it was the right call. And had Kohlhausen's pass been a bit higher, wouldn't have been second-guessed at all.

(TCU failed on a two-point conversion in the third quarter that would have cut Oklahoma's lead to eight. Patterson took responsibility for that call and said it was a mistake.)

Mayfield's availability will be a big key for the Sooners, who are fighting for a possible berth in the College Football Playoff. After Oklahoma State lost to Baylor on Saturday night, a win over the Cowboys may not be as convincing as if it came over an undefeated OSU team.

Notre Dame loses RB C.J. Prosise, CB KeiVarae Russell to injury

Boston College kicks to Notre Dame on the opening kickoff during the first quarter of the Shamrock Series NCAA college football game at Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, in Boston Saturday, Nov. 21, 2015. (AP Photo/Charles Krupa)No. 4 Notre Dame struggled, but eked out a 19-16 win over Boston College at Fenway Park in Boston on Saturday night, and it lost two prominent players to injuries in the process.

C.J. Prosise, a senior running back, left the game with what head coach Brian Kelly said after the game is a high ankle sprain. Before Prosise left in the second quarter, he had 57 yards rushing and 17 yards receiving. Those 57 yards put him over 1,000 for the season (1,032), making him the 18th to reach that milestone in Notre Dame history.

Prosise has been a workhorse all season for the Irish, but has been dealing with injuries over the past few weeks. He missed the second half of the Nov. 7 win over Pittsburgh due to a concussion. That head injury and a few other bumps and bruises kept him out last weekend against Wake Forest, too.

Prosise wasn’t the only prominent Notre Dame to go down with an injury against BC. Cornerback KeiVarae Russell, a senior, suffered a stress fracture in his foot, Kelly said. Russell had 58 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions coming into Saturday night’s game.

It is unknown whether either will play next Saturday at Stanford.

Winners and losers: The Big 12's playoff chances are playing out just like last year

$
0
0

The Big 12’s unintentional backloading of its schedule was supposed to help the conference and its chances for a spot in the College Football Playoff.

However, in the past two weeks as Oklahoma has beaten Baylor and Baylor has beaten Oklahoma State and TCU has been derailed by injuries to its star players, it’s difficult to put a finger on which is truly the best team in the Big 12.

And more importantly, whether any of them deserve a playoff spot.

Baylor’s 45-35 win against Oklahoma State ensured the conference would not have an undefeated team to boast and the Sooner’s nailbiter in Fort Worth confirmed that three one-loss teams will head into the final full weekend of the Big 12 schedule.

The Bears, the Cowboys and Oklahoma all have one loss and the two Oklahoma teams have just one game remaining. Baylor is the only one-loss Big 12 team with two games remaining. When the regular season ends, only one Oklahoma team will still have one loss and Baylor could be out of the conversation altogether (though, not likely).

Seems familiar doesn’t it?

This is the same position that Baylor and TCU found themselves in a year ago. TCU was the higher ranked team heading into the final rankings, Baylor launched a campaign calling for head-to-head to come into play and while both teams were squabbling in the media, the CFP committee made sure both were on the outside looking in.

By the time the latest rankings come out on Tuesday, the Big 12 could have three teams in the top 10. Oklahoma, which was No. 7 this week, should move into the top six and some believe could even crack the top four. Baylor, which was No. 10, will probably land around No. 6 and Oklahoma State, which was No. 6, will probably end up No. 10.

Of course, this is just speculation. The CFP is a fickle beast and the committee's opinions tend to change with the day of the week. It’s also clear it doesn’t hold the Big 12 in the highest regard as none of the Big 12 teams, even when there were undefeated ones, ever cracked the top four.

And really, the Big 12 only gets two more cracks at the rankings while several other teams get three simply because they play conference title games. Baylor plays a lowly Texas team that championship weekend, but the other teams in contention are done.

A year ago, the biggest points of contention for keeping the Big 12 out were head-to-head, nonconference schedule and the lack of a conference championship game. The Big 12 made one change to remedy that this year, it declared that only one team would be named champion instead co-champions like a year ago.

However, the other problems from a year ago are going to be problems this year. If Baylor is the highest-ranked team, there will be complaints about its nonconference schedule, which consisted of SMU, Lamar and Rice. Oklahoma State has the same nonconference problem as Baylor with contests against Central Michigan, Central Arkansas and Texas-San Antonio. Of the three teams, Oklahoma has the best nonconference schedule with a win at Tennessee, but many would argue it has the worst loss of all the one-loss teams in the running (not just the Big 12) with the loss to Texas.

It’s time for the Big 12 to realize that if it wants to gain the respect of the CFP committee it’s either going to have to have an undefeated team with a strong nonconference schedule or it’s going to have to expand and play a conference championship. Otherwise, history will continue to repeat as it appears it’s going to do this year.

Here are the winners and losers from Week 12:

WINNERS

Jim McElwain: It was ugly against a terrible FAU team, but the first-year coach secured a 10-win season thanks to a 20-14 result in overtime, becoming the only coach at Florida to ever pull off the feat in his debut season. The Gators’ only loss remains LSU ahead of their rivalry showdown with Florida State next week. So while many critics are clamoring that Florida doesn’t belong in the CFP conversation, and Saturday’s result against the Owls didn’t help the Gators’ case, the fact that they’re still in position to win the SEC is a remarkable feather in McElwain’s cap.

Kansas State: With just over a minute to play in Manhattan, the Wildcats trailed Iowa State by seven and the Cyclones had the ball. Then Mike Warren fumbled and Kansas State recovered. Four plays later, Charles Jones ran it in from five yards out. With 40 seconds left in the game, Iowa State QB Joel Lanning fumbled, and you guessed it, Kansas State recovered. Two plays later, Jack Cantele hit a 42-yard field goal to ensure the Wildcats won’t go winless in conference play this year. A Kansas State win looked quite improbable when Iowa State was up 35-14.

Air Force: A 37-30 win over Boise State made Troy Calhoun’s bunch winners of the Mountain Division in the Mountain West. The Falcons’ losses are to Michigan State, Navy, and Colorado State, with all but the latter certainly excusable considering the landscape this year. And the win against Boise State on the road came despite a minus-4 turnover margin. Karson Roberts threw for 279 yards and two scores while running for another 66. Beating a revitalized New Mexico team on the road won’t be easy next week, but the Falcons are now just two wins away from a 10-win season. Beyond impressive.

Brandon Allen (Arkansas) and Dak Prescott (Mississippi State): The two quarterbacks combined for 914 yards and 12 touchdowns in Mississippi State's 51-50 win. Yes, you read those stats correctly.

We'll start with the winning quarterback. Prescott had 508 yards and five touchdowns. His fifth was the game-winning score when he found Fred Ross for a touchdown with about three minutes left. Prescott has now thrown for 23 touchdowns and two interceptions this season after throwing for 27 TDs and 11 interceptions last season.

Allen put Arkansas in position to win the game but a 29-yard field goal was blocked and MSU was able to run out the clock for the win. Allen finished with 406 yards passing and had seven touchdowns. The seven TD tosses tied the record for most TDs thrown in a single game by an SEC quarterback. It's true. A Bret Bielema-coached quarterback tied a conference passing record. Crazy, isn't it?

Mississippi State is now 8-3 and plays Ole Miss next week. Arkansas, 6-5, plays Missouri.

Vernon Adams, Oregon: This is the Vernon Adams we all expected when the season started, right? Adams struggled with a finger injury early in the season and missed several games. Since returning, Adams has been great and the Ducks haven’t lost. In Saturday’s dominant 48-28 win over USC, Adams threw for 407 yards and six touchdowns while completing 20-of-25 passes. Since his return from injury, Adams has thrown for 1,499 yards, 18 touchdowns and four interceptions. Oregon, now 8-3, has won five straight games.

LOSERS

Notre Dame: Yeah, the Irish beat Boston College 19-16, but it wasn't a win that is going to be a convincing case for why the Irish should be a top-four team in college football.

Boston College has a good defense. A very good defense. But five turnovers, including three in the red zone, isn't simply the product of playing a good defense. And don't you think Notre Dame is going to play a good defense or two if it makes the playoff?

Heck, the Irish will see a very good one when it plays Stanford next week. It wouldn't be surprising to see Notre Dame fall out of the top four in favor of Iowa and Oklahoma on Tuesday. But even if it stays in the No. 4 slot, a convincing win against Stanford is a must. That way Notre Dame has a case to be in the top four not only after the Stanford game, but in the only poll that matters after the conference title games – a weekend when the Irish doesn't play.

Memphis: The party was fun while it lasted. There’s no question what Justin Fuente has done at Memphis is incredible, and he’s about get super paid somewhere else. But the season has fizzled quickly from the fever pitch it reached just a few weeks ago. Saturday’s 31-12 loss to Temple drops the Tigers to third in the American West Division, behind Houston and Navy. Still a great year, but a disappointing fall from the heights the program appeared ready to claim.

New Mexico: New Mexico had a chance to play for the Mountain West’s Mountain Division championship, but a loss to Colorado State on Saturday derailed those plans.

The Lobos had three opportunities to tie or take the lead after the Rams went up 28-21 with 6:05 remaining. However, those drives resulted in an interception, 10 total yards and another interception with 1:11 remaining.

If New Mexico had won, the Lobos would have forced a makeshift playoff during next week’s regular season finale against Air Force. However, Air Force’s win coupled with the Lobos’ loss secured the division title for the Falcons.

New Mexico, which has won six games for the first time since 2007, has not won a division title since winning the WAC’s Mountain Division in 1997 under coach Dennis Franchione.

Rice: Things were looking good for Rice seven games into the season. The Owls were 4-3 after a 38-31 win over Army and needed just two wins for a bowl berth. Well, that bowl berth isn't happening. The Owls lost 34-24 to UTSA on Saturday to drop to 4-7.

As you can see, 4-3 to 4-7 is a four-game losing streak. Not the way you want to end the season. But on the bright side, at least the game wasn't like the 65-10 drubbing the Owls suffered to Southern Miss last week. And Charlotte is the next opponent on the schedule. Maybe Rice can get to 5-7.

Duke: Duke has completely fallen off the face of the Earth since its controversial, last-second loss to Miami on Halloween. Including that game, the Blue Devils, who started the season 6-1, have dropped four games in a row to the Hurricanes, North Carolina, Pitt and now Virginia. The Blue Devils’ defense allowed 502 yards in the 42-34 loss, nearly 100 yards more than UVA’s previous season high. Duke is now 6-5 and 3-4 in ACC play.

Washington State quarterback Luke Falk was carted off the field in the third quarter against Colorado after taking his second significant hit to the head in as many weeks.

Falk dropped back to pass when he was grabbed by Colorado’s Samson Kafovalu. Falk was whipped around and his head slammed against the turf. He appeared to be knocked out.

Falk laid motionless on the turf for several minutes while members of the training staff attended to him. He was ultimately immobilized and carted off the field. However, he did give a thumbs up and a wave as he was leaving the playing surface.

During his time in the game, Falk had completed 27 of 35 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown.

Arizona linebacker Scooby Wright told Fox Sports on Saturday night he expects to play in the Wildcats’ bowl game.

Wright, who has missed almost all of the 2015 season while recovering from a sprained right foot, told the website that he started running about a week ago, and that he’s working on gaining strength in his foot and lateral quickness.

A year ago, Wright, an All-American, won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, the Rotary Lombardi Award and the Chuck Bednarik Award, which all given annually to the nation's top defender.

In Wright absence, the Wildcats are ranked No. 121 in total defense. They are allowing 463 yards per game and 35.7 points per game.

Iowa State fires coach Paul Rhoads

Iowa State has fired coach Paul Rhoads, the school announced Sunday.

Rhoads will coach his final game Saturday against West Virginia.

The news comes on the heels of Iowa State’s 38-35 loss to Kansas State on Saturday. The Cyclones allowed 10 points during a 39-second span in the final minute to lose the contest.

The Cyclones are 3-8 this season, but this team is probably one of the most competitive Rhoads has fielded in the past three seasons. Overall, Rhoads finishes his Iowa State career 32-54 with three bowl berths in seven seasons.

The school will owe Rhoads $4.5 million according to the buyout clause in his contract.

There were happier times earlier in Rhoads’ tenure. In 2009, the Cyclones beat Nebraska. In 2011, ISU shocked No. 2 Oklahoma State, which knocked the Cowboys out of BCS title contention. He also oversaw wins against Texas and No. 15 TCU in 2010.

However, in recent years, Rhoads’ teams couldn’t replicate those earlier performances and the Cyclones have gone 7-26 during the past three seasons.

Notre Dame CB KeiVarae Russell has broken tibia

(Photo by Jared Wickerham/Getty Images)Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said Sunday that cornerback KeiVarae Russell would miss six to eight weeks after suffering a broken right tibia against Boston College.

And when talking about Russell's injury, Kelly had his sights set on a certain College Football Playoff game.

"Certainly very disappointing," Kelly said via BlueandGoldIllustrated.com. "He was in a lot of pain last night on the way home. But he's just one of those kids that you hate to lose. He's given so much to the program...I think it'd have to be closer to the national championship game [to get him back] than earlier. That's a pretty hard number, the 6-8 [weeks], because of the bone growth situation there. We're obviously going to do whatever we can, but I think it's more towards the national championship game getting him back than a playoff game."

Kelly said Russell was in a cast after the game and will have a rod inserted into his leg. Russell has 60 tackles and 3.5 tackles for a loss. He's Notre Dame's second-leading tackler. The Irish are currently No. 4 in the College Football Playoff rankings.

Kelly also said that C.J. Prosise was considered doubtful for Notre Dame's game against Stanford . Prosise also left Notre Dame's win over Boston College on Saturday night with an ankle injury. He has no ligament damage in the ankle, however.

Report: Les Miles' LSU future still iffy, result vs. A&M doesn't matter

As expected, LSU's loss to Ole Miss has cranked up more discussions about the future of LSU coach Les Miles.

According to NOLA.com, a decision about Miles' job will come soon. The report said "many" of the members of LSU's booster program are ready to move in a different direction.

The source said Miles' future at LSU is not tied to the outcome of the Tigers' game against Texas A&M on Saturday at Tiger Stadium. "It will have no bearing on what we do with him", the source said.

The Tigers, 7-3, lost to Ole Miss 38-17 on Saturday for their third loss in three weeks. LSU was down 24-0 before Brandon Harris threw a touchdown pass.

A report from the Baton Rouge Advocate days before the Ole Miss game said the Tigers' final two games of the season could decide Miles' future. He has a $15 million buyout on his contract and there are also buyouts for his assistant coaches.

The report also said Miles met with LSU officials the week before the Ole Miss game to discuss his job status. A possible retirement after the 2016 season was brought up. Miles is 62 years old.

If the Tigers do part with Miles, the candidate pool will be incredibly thin. When you get rid of a national title-winning coach who reels in top recruiting classes, there aren't many coaches who can succeed him. The NOLA.com report details some names of coaches LSU could be considering.

To that end, representatives of the football program have begun to vet potential replacements for Miles through back channels, the source said, with a preference for an established head coach. Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher is the main target for many foundation members, the source said. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, TCU head coach Gary Patterson and even former NFL coach Jon Gruden have also been mentioned as candidates.

LSU plays Texas A&M on Saturday night. If LSU finishes the season at 8-3, the Tigers will be in line for a very good bowl berth.

Athlon Sports' most interesting stats from Week 12

$

Numbers and statistics are a huge part of college football. Every Sunday, reading updated box scores and stats is like Christmas for fans and media members. Some stats like total offense and total defense are overrated, but each help paint a picture for a team or particular game.

Whether the stats are historic, advanced or just an observation from a box score, Athlon Sports brings the most intriguing, important, historic and bizarre stats from around the weekend of college football action:

132: Ohio State’s Total Yardage Against Michigan State, Lowest Under Urban Meyer

(AP Photo/Jay LaPrete)Ohio State’s hopes of a repeat took a huge hit with Saturday’s loss to Michigan State. The Buckeyes have struggled to find the right mix on offense, but this unit appeared to turn a corner with J.T. Barrett as the starting quarterback. However, Michigan State exposed Ohio State’s biggest flaw. The Spartans stacked the line of scrimmage and forced Barrett and the receivers to win the game. The Buckeyes couldn’t and managed only 132 total yards, which was the lowest mark for this program under coach Urban Meyer. The 132 total yards was also the lowest by any of Meyer’s teams in his 14 years as a head coach.

2: Wins by Michigan State in 2015 With First and Only Lead at 0:00

(Photo by Jamie Sabau/Getty Images)For the second time this season, Michigan State won a huge conference matchup on the road in unusual fashion. The Spartans knocked off Michigan on the final play of the game after a dropped snap by the punter resulted in a fumble return for a touchdown. The ending of Saturday night’s Ohio State-Michigan State game wasn’t as chaotic, but the Spartans found a way to win without starting quarterback Connor Cook and used a 41-yard field goal by Michael Geiger to score the 17-14 victory in Columbus. The field goal by Geiger connected as time expired, which marked the second win in 2015 by the Spartans with their first lead of the game coming at 0:00.

1999: LSU’s Last Three-Game Losing Streak

LSU’s late-season collapse continued on Saturday with a 38-17 loss at Ole Miss. After starting 7-0 and climbing to No. 2 in the first College Football Playoff rankings, the Tigers have been dominated in three consecutive losses. Coach Les Miles’ team lost 30-16 at Alabama, followed by a 31-14 to Arkansas in Baton Rouge. On Saturday, LSU looked disorganized and distracted in a 38-17 loss to Ole Miss. This is the first three-game losing streak for the Tigers since 1999. And the losing streak is a big reason why Miles is on the hot seat going into LSU’s final game against Texas A&M this Saturday.

35.7: Average Yards on Oregon QB Vernon Adams’ Six TD Passes Against USC

(AP Photo/Ryan Kang)A healthy Vernon Adams makes a huge difference for Oregon’s offense. The Ducks have been on fire since Adams returned from a finger injury, reeling off five consecutive wins and three performances of 44 or more points in that span. In Saturday’s 48-28 win over USC, Adams completed 20 of 25 throws for 407 yards and six scores. The six touchdown passes by Adams averaged 35.7 yards, including a 48-yard strike to Bralon Addison to open Oregon’s scoring on Saturday. Additionally, the six touchdown passes were the most by an opponent against USC in program history.

914: Combined Passing Yards in Saturday Arkansas-Mississippi State Game

The box score from Saturday night’s Arkansas-Mississippi State game didn’t resemble the usual SEC slugfest between Arkansas and Mississippi State. Instead, the scoreboard and stat sheet looked like Big 12 shootout. The two teams combined for 1,110 yards and 101 points, with quarterbacks Dak Prescott (Mississippi State) and Brandon Allen (Arkansas) combining for 914 yards and 12 passing touchdowns. Allen became just the seventh player in SEC history to throw seven touchdowns in a game.

389: Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey’s All-Purpose Yards Against California

(Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey continued to build a strong case for the Heisman in Saturday night’s win over California. The sophomore rushed for 192 yards on 29 attempts, caught a 49-yard pass for a score and accumulated 148 yards on three kickoff returns. McCaffrey recorded 389 all-purpose yards against the Golden Bears, which set a single-game school record. The sophomore leads the nation with an average of 255.2 all-purpose yards per game.

3: Rushing TDs Needed by Alabama RB Derrick Henry to Break SEC Record

Alabama didn’t need much from running back Derrick Henry in Saturday’s easy 56-6 victory over Charleston Southern. However, the junior was quite effective in limited snaps, rushing for 68 yards and two touchdowns on nine carries. Henry has 21 rushing touchdowns this season, including 11 over the last five matchups. He needs three rushing scores the rest of the year to break the SEC’s single-season record, currently shared by former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow and Auburn running back Tre Mason at 23.

22: Consecutive Wins by Northern Illinois in November

Northern Illinois moved one step closer to winning the MAC’s West Division on Wednesday night with a 27-19 victory over Western Michigan. The win over the Broncos marked the 22nd consecutive victory by the Huskies in November. The last time Northern Illinois loss in November came in 2009 (Nov. 27) at the hands of Central Michigan. The Huskies have also won 35 out of their last 36 games at home.

27.6: Average Yards Per Completion by Baylor QB Chris Johnson on Saturday

(AP Photo/Sue Ogrocki)Baylor has been hit hard by injuries to its quarterbacks this season. The Bears lost starter Seth Russell to a neck injury against Iowa State, and true freshman Jarrett Stidham suffered a back injury in last week’s loss against Oklahoma and injured an ankle in Saturday night’s win over Oklahoma State. Even though Stidham was a huge loss in the second half against the Cowboys, Baylor’s offense never missed a beat. Third-string quarterback Chris Johnson – who converted from quarterback to receiver this preseason – replaced Stidham and completed five of his 10 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the 45-35 victory over Oklahoma State. Johnson averaged 27.6 yards on his five completions, which were his first pass attempts in a game since Sept. 6, 2014.

2: Unbeaten Teams Remaining After Week 12

Three teams – Ohio State, Houston and Oklahoma State – lost on Saturday, which leaves just two teams unbeaten going into Week 13. Iowa and Clemson are both 11-0 and have clinched spots in their conference championships. The Hawkeyes will be tested at Nebraska on Friday, while the Tigers play at rival South Carolina this week. Saturday’s results should ensure the College Football Playoff’s final top four will have at least two teams with one loss. Finishing the season with an unbeaten record is no easy task for any team.

Syracuse fires head coach Scott Shafer

(AP Photo/Nick Lisi)Syracuse has become the latest FBS program to fire its head coach.

Two days after the Orange lost its eighth consecutive game, the school has decided to fire head coach Scott Shafer "effective at the end of this season."

Athletic director Mark Coyle announced the decision Monday morning and said Shafer would coach the team's season finale against Boston College.

"I want to thank Scott, his wife Missy, and their family for their seven years of dedication and service to SU Athletics and Syracuse University," Coyle said in a statement. "Scott has worked tirelessly to educate our students on and off the field and to build our program. However, I feel a change in leadership is needed at this time. A national search will begin immediately."

Saturday’s 42-29 loss to NC State dropped the team’s record to 3-8 after a 3-0 start. The Orange went 3-9 last season after going 7-6 and winning the Texas Bowl in Shafer’s first season on campus. Overall, Shafer’s record with the program is 13-23 and 6-17 in ACC play in his three seasons as head coach.

Shafer was promoted from defensive coordinator in January 2013 after Doug Marrone left Syracuse to take the head coaching job with the Buffalo Bills. He originally joined the program in 2009 when Marrone was hired to replace the fired Greg Robinson.

Before he arrived at Syracuse, Shafer spent time as defensive coordinator at Michigan, Stanford, Western Michigan and Northern Illinois. He also had stints as an assistant at Illinois, Rhode Island and Indiana.

With Shafer’s dismissal, there are now 13 FBS openings: Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa State, Louisiana-Monroe, Maryland, Miami, Missouri, North Texas, South Carolina, Syracuse, UCF, USC and Virginia Tech.

Report: NCAA to decide Monday on best course of action to fill bowl slots

$

0

(Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports)Monday is reportedly the big day when the NCAA will make a decision on the best way to fill bowl slots if 80 teams do not reach the six-win mark.

According to a report from CBS Sports, the NCAA Football Oversight Committee has a conference call scheduled to figure out what it will do if it needs to assign teams with only five wins to bowl games. There are currently 71 bowl eligible teams, meaning there are nine slots available to fill the 41 bowl games with two weeks remaining in the season.

There are 13 teams with a 5-6 record and one game left on their schedule. South Alabama, 5-5, has two more games on its schedule.

The report says that the NCAA could choose teams based on their Academic Progress Rate. There is also a chance that some bowls “may not be played,” though that scenario is unlikely.

From CBS Sports:

Language remains unclear from three-year old legislation that basically took the NCAA out of regulating bowls. When the NCAA backed out, it retained the right to dictate how spots would be filled if there weren't enough bowl-eligible teams.

Those involved generally believe the NCAA will settle on populating bowls with sub-.500 teams based on their rank in the Academic Progress Rate. The 12-year-old metric ranks teams on their graduation rates. Football as a whole historically has the lowest APR among mainstream NCAA sports.

The solution will be “more art than science,” said one person involved in the process. The NCAA and committee waited until this point in the season because the situation is clearer.

In addition to the 14 five-win teams, there are also four teams – Texas, Kansas State, Georgia State and Louisiana-Lafayette – with four wins and two games remaining.

The following teams can clinch bowl eligibility with a win this weekend:

AAC: East Carolina (5-6) vs. Cincinnati (6-5), Tulsa (5-6) at Tulane (3-8)

ACC: Virginia Tech (5-6) at Virginia (4-7)

Big Ten: Indiana (5-6) at Purdue (2-9), Nebraska (5-6) vs. Iowa (11-0), Minnesota (5-6) vs. Wisconsin (8-3), Illinois (5-6) vs. Northwestern (9-2)

C-USA: Old Dominion (5-6) vs. Florida Atlantic (2-9)

MAC: Buffalo (5-6) vs. UMass (2-9)

MWC: San Jose State (5-6) vs. Boise State (7-4)

Pac-12: Washington (5-6) vs. Washington State (8-3)

SEC: Kentucky (5-6) vs. Louisville (6-5), Missouri (5-6) at Arkansas (6-5)

Sun Belt: South Alabama (5-5) at Georgia Southern (7-3)

Ohio State will not discipline Ezekiel Elliott for postgame comments

$

0

Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott will face no discipline for questioning the Buckeyes’ play calls following the 17-14 loss to Michigan State last Saturday.

"We don't condone that, but he apologized," coach Urban Meyer said on Saturday. "We squashed it as a team. I couldn't disagree with him — he should have got the ball more. That just wasn't the forum for that."

Following the loss, Elliott criticized the playcalling and his lack of touches during the contest. Elliott had 12 carries for 33 yards and the game’s first touchdown. He also said he would not be returning to Ohio State for his senior season.

"We'll have some momentum, we'll call some plays that work, and then we kind of try to get away from it, try to get cute and run some other stuff," Elliott said after the game. "I was lobbying to Coach Meyer all game. I think I do deserve more than [12] carries. I think I really do.

"Honestly, I can't speak for the play calling. I don't know what was going on. I don't know what they were seeing. But honestly, it didn't work out. It wasn't working.”

The loss broke Ohio State’s 23-game winning streak and also halted Elliott’s streak of 15-straight games with at least 100 yards.

On Monday, Elliott tweeted an apology to fans, but said he doesn’t regret his criticisms.

This is not the kind of distraction Ohio State wanted heading into a pivotal contest against Michigan this week, which is probably why Meyer nipped it in the bud early in his press conference. Meyer also said he’d be more involved in the playcalling this week in an effort to alleviate some of Elliott’s grievances.

The Buckeyes need to beat Michigan and have Michigan State lose to Penn State to play for the Big Ten title and perhaps work their way back into the College Football Playoff.

Cast your vote for the best catch of Week 12 (Videos)

$
0
0

Each Monday, we’ll gather the best catches from the weekend (or the midweek games) and bring them here for you to vote on in a poll. There could be only a few nominees, or there could be five or six. It all depends on the weekend. If you have a catch you’d like to nominate, don’t hesitate to hit us up on Twitter (@YahooDrSaturday).

The voting remains open until Friday and the winner advances to a final, end of the year vote where the best catch of the season will be determined. And since we started this midway through the season, some of our favorite catches from the first half will re-surface at the end of the season as well. Don’t you worry.

Another week, another MAC receiver taking home catch of the week honors. This time in Week 11 it was Akron’s Austin Wolf who was our top vote getter with this impressive diving grab.

This round of voting wasn’t even close. Wolf took home a whopping 53 percent of the vote with Temple’s Robby Anderson (27 percent), Michigan State’s Macgarrett Kings Jr. (13 percent), Cal’s Kenny Lawler (5 percent) and Arizona’s Nate Phillips (1 percent) rounding out the voting.

Here are the Week 12 nominees:

Richard Mullaney - Alabama

Oregon State grad transfer Richard Mullaney has been a nice addition to the Alabama offense. While Calvin Ridley and ArDarius Stewart develop into stars, Mullaney has been a reliable target for Jake Coker and showcased his awesome hands with a first quarter TD catch against Charleston Southern.

The 6-foot-3 Mullaney showed off a great vertical leap and managed to get his right foot down inbounds and keep possession of the ball as he fell to the ground. That's a tough play.

Gehrig Dieter - Bowling Green

Roger Lewis gets all the hype among the Bowling Green receiving corps, but junior Gehrig Dieter is also having a great season for the Falcons. Dieter had 13 catches for 103 yards and three touchdowns last week against Toledo, and two of those TD catches were phenomenal. First, late in the first half, he hauled in this pass with only his left hand and maintained possession for a score.

If that wasn't enough, he made a similar catch -- this time with his right hand on the opposite side of the end zone -- for another Falcons score.

Catches like this are why you can never overlook midweek #MACtion.

Trevor Davis - California

During Saturday night's game at Stanford, Cal cut the Cardinal lead down to 21-16 late in the third quarter. That would not have happened without this tough one-handed catch from Trevor Davis. Jared Goff hit Davis on a skinny post, and Davis brought the pass in with one handed and held on before taking a huge hit.

Here's a closer look at Davis' one-handed snag.

That 20-yard gain allowed the Bears to score three plays later. Though Stanford eventually pulled away, Davis had a nice game with seven catches for 80 yards.

Terry Godwin - Georgia

Georgia freshman Terry Godwin made a big play to help his team avoid an upset from Georgia Southern. With the Bulldogs trailing 14-7 late in the third quarter, Godwin made a diving touchdown catch on a nice pass from Grayson Lambert to tie the game at 14.

Godwin used every inch of his 5-foot-11 frame to make a clutch play for the Bulldogs, who went on to win 23-17 in overtime. On top of that, it was the first career touchdown for the five-star freshman. That's good timing.

Fred Ross - Mississippi State

Fred Ross has quietly been one of the best receivers in the SEC this season, and he showcased his skills with an awesome touchdown catch in the second quarter against Arkansas.

Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott found Ross 20 yards downfield. The ball was thrown a bit behind Ross, but he leapt in the air and snagged it with his right hand. Ross then made two Arkansas defensive backs miss and scampered 35 yards for a Bulldogs touchdown.

Vote for your favorite catch in the poll below:
